Unauthorized charging

I rented a vehicle from Budget/Avis at Dalaman Airport, Turkey.

At pickup on 16.05, I clearly stated multiple times that I needed the car until 20.05 with return at another airport in Istanbul. The employee initially offered a Renault Clio, then informed me that only a Volvo S60 was available. After discussion, we agreed on a final rental price of approximately 22,000 TRY including the one-way return fee and additional mileage. This amount was charged successfully at the office, along with the deposit.

Because the employee seemed confused several times during the process, I even wrote the rental dates (16–20 May) on a piece of paper for her. These discussions should also be visible on the office security cameras.

No rental agreement, invoice, or confirmation was ever sent to my email or WhatsApp after pickup.

The next day, completely without warning, the company started attempting additional charges on my card. Over the following days there were repeated charging attempts for multiple random amounts, including:
- 7,300 TRY
- 8,179 TRY
- 8,857 TRY
- 10,000 TRY
- 5,000 TRY
- and even an incorrect attempt of 88,339 TRY.

Later, the company admitted that the 88,339 TRY transaction was a “typing error.”

What is most concerning is that nobody contacted me when these charges began. If the vehicle had truly been rented for only 1 day as they later claimed, the company would obviously have contacted me immediately on 17.05 regarding an overdue vehicle.

Instead, nobody contacted me until 20.05 — after the planned return date had already arrived.

Only later did different employees begin giving contradictory explanations:
- first claiming the rental was only for 1 day,
- then mentioning a “grace period,”
- later saying the rental had been “extended.”

However, no updated signed agreement, written approval, invoice, or authorization for these additional charges was ever provided.

To this day, I still have not received:
- a signed rental agreement,
- a proper invoice breakdown,
- proof of any approved extension,
- or explanations for all attempted transactions.

The entire situation looks extremely unprofessional and concerning, especially the repeated unauthorized charging attempts with inconsistent amounts.

The case is now being disputed officially with the bank and Turkish consumer authorities.

Avis Turkey - Ill-gotten gain by adding extra %20 Tax to toll charges

Hello,

I am writing to raise a complaint about an issue I experienced with Avis Turkey, a company I have regularly used during my trips to Turkey. I always believed Avis had a strong reputation, but this experience has seriously damaged my trust.

I first reported this issue through Avis Turkey directly, as well as through sikayetvar.com and cimer.gov.tr, but I was unable to get a clear or satisfactory response. After seeing that many other customers have reported the same problem online, I decided to contact the headquarters, hoping the matter would be handled more seriously.

In short, Avis Turkey appears to be charging an extra 20% tax (which I think is an ill-gotten gain) on road and bridge fees (HGS), even though these fees already include the required taxes and are paid directly to the government. Despite my repeated requests, I was never provided with an official and verifiable document showing the actual HGS charges during my rental period. Instead, I was only given total amounts or a manually prepared document with no official basis.

To explain the issue in detail:
I rented a car from the Istanbul Beylikdüzü branch between 10–11 January 2026 under contract number 198870534. At the start of the rental, a deposit of 4,500 TL was charged to my credit card. When the rental ended, 3,253.80 TL was refunded, and 1,246.20 TL was kept without any clear explanation. Since there were no issues other than possible HGS usage, I assumed this amount was related to toll charges and did not question it at that time.

About a month later, I received another notification that 3,144 TL had been charged to my credit card. When I contacted customer service, I was told this was for “extra toll (HGS) charges.” I then asked for a detailed and official HGS statement to understand these charges, but I was told such a document could not be provided. Instead, I later received an email listing a few toll crossings, which appeared to be manually prepared and not an official record. This made me even more concerned.

Although the total amount of the listed toll crossings was 3,658.50 TL, the total amount charged to me (including the first deduction) was 4,390.20 TL. When I questioned this difference, I was informed that a 20% VAT had been added. However, toll fees shown in the official HGS online system already appear as VAT included. My own research also shows that VAT rates on roads and bridges vary and are not 20%.

For these reasons, I request that all HGS charges related to my rental be shared with me in an official, verifiable document. After confirming the amounts against official records, I ask that the incorrect 20% VAT be removed and that any overcharged amount be refunded to my credit card.

I kindly request a transparent, documented explanation and a proper review of this matter so that the issue can be resolved in line with legal requirements and customer trust can be restored.

Unfair hidden fees and lack of transparency – Turkey, Gaziantep Airport

On January 1, 2026, I rented an Opel Mokka from Avis at Gaziantep Airport. Upon arrival, I was forced to pay an additional winter tire fee of 2,769 TL, which was never mentioned during the booking process or in the initial rental agreement.

The agent insisted that this fee was mandatory, stating that if I did not pay, the vehicle would not be delivered and my original payment would be forfeited. While I am aware that winter tires are legally mandatory in Turkey between December 1st and April 1st, Avis has a responsibility to include these predictable, mandatory costs in the initial reservation price. Failing to disclose a mandatory legal requirement at the time of booking and then forcing the customer to pay at the counter is a "take it or leave it" approach that lacks transparency and violates consumer rights.

I request a full refund of this 2,769 TL fee, as it was not disclosed when I made my reservation. I hope Avis will take the necessary steps to rectify this situation and improve their pricing transparency.

The car had menus in Turkish

The car that we got had all the menu in Turkish, we could use the radio, Bluetooth and all features.
We had a warning light show up every day we drove which was also in Turkish
We called about 10 times for assistance (Avis), and nobody in roadside assistance could speak English. Unfortunately, our phone (Australian) could not take calls, so when people could not speak English, there was no way they could call us back. But even when this was explained over and over we could not get help.
We also sent 2 emails to the addresses that we found on the website explaining the warning lights. Now, ten days later, since we returned the car, we have never received an answer.
We also returned the car a day earlier, we requested a refund for the day we did not use the car, the request was never acknowledged, responded to or processed.
We spent a lot of time during our holidays trying to do the right thing for the car (in relation to the warning light), it was a waste of energy and time. Very frustrating.
Incredible that a huge international company has such poor service and can't handle helping people in English

Bully and thief company

After boarding the Ankara-Antalya flight at 5:05 a.m. on July 12, 2025, and taking my seat, I reserved a car through the Avis prepaid reservation system.

When I landed at Antalya Airport, picked up my luggage, and went to the Avis counter, they told me the system was down and I had to wait. After waiting for about an hour, they told me they couldn't rent a car because I'd forgotten my driver's license at home. They also told me to email them to cancel.

At 7:49 a.m., I sent my cancellation email to cs(at)avis.com.tr, "They didn't give me the car because I forgot my license, so rental cancellation number 36927585tr2."
After waiting for days in a system with no communication channels and no access, I received a refund of 14,244 TL, half of what I paid.

I can't understand how I lost 15,000 TL in a transaction that took 2 hours and 45 minutes between paying for the car and canceling.

Even though I use fleet vehicles purchased from Otokoç for both my personal and fleet vehicles, I've decided to sever my ties with the company.

Avis never acknowledges the vehicles you purchase online. If you buy them for a rip-off, you can only make transactions through the bank.

No matter how you look at it, it's bullying.

Disappointing experience with Avis Antalya Airport.

I booked a Fiat Egea Cross (Compact SUV) via Booking.com. On arrival, the car wasn’t available. Instead, Avis staff offered a Renault Clio — convincing that the Renault Clio is a car of the same class as a compact SUV!!! I was forced to pay extra €€€ for a Ford Puma upgrade.

Although I returned the car on time, full tank, no damage — only partial deposit was refunded. No explanation, no photos, no report.

Lack of transparency. I don’t recommend Avis at Antalya Airport.

VÆRSTE OPLEVELSE

Vi lejede en bil for to uger siden med afhentning d. 22. juni i Konya Lufthavn. Vi fik telefonisk bekræftet reservationen og forventede derfor, at alt var i orden ved ankomst.

Desværre blev vi mødt af personalet med beskeden om, at der ikke fandtes nogen reservation i vores navn. Da vi forsøgte at forklare, at vi havde fået den bekræftet, blev vi mødt med en uprofessionel og flabet attitude. En medarbejder sagde direkte: "Gå og lej fra et andet sted."

Vi oplevede ingen vilje til at hjælpe os eller undersøge sagen nærmere – blot afvisning og uhøflig opførsel. Det er uacceptabelt at blive behandlet på denne måde, især når man har planlagt og booket i god tid.

Vi vil kraftigt fraråde andre at bruge dette selskab, hvis man forventer pålidelig service og respektfuld kundebehandling.

Ridiculous Service Ever.

Ridiculous Service Ever.
2 hours waiting for a worker to bring a car. At the airport we waited 1 hour saying that they are washing the car.
So they sent us 1 hour later downstairs to pick up the car. No one is there, waiting another 1 hour. Calling them no one pick up, After 1 hour of waiting in the cold, someone came with noo excuse nothing, just saying that the workers who are supposed to wash the car were drinking coffee instead and that's why it took long time !!!!

WARNING STAY AWAY FROM AVIS IN DENIZLI…

WARNING STAY AWAY FROM AVIS IN DENIZLI AIRPORT OR MIGHT WHOLE TURKEY.
I booked a car for 18 days and returned it 5 days earlier due to my work was finished earlier than expected.
I have still not received my invoice or any money back for the 5 days neither I have received my deposit back, Avis Denizli owns me 18143 TL = 514 euro.
My Turkish colleague have contacted Avis Denizli and Avis Turkey to help me get my invoice and money back without sucess, I have emailed AVIS Turkey and nothing happens.
In my work I have rented cars in different parts over the world but this out of the ordinary. When I returned the car the office was closed, opening hours on their website is not true and don’t trust their "good" reviews on their website it is only BS. I have the same experience regarding attitude as Fahd Korambayil who wrote a review 4 years ago, so nothing has changed.
AVIS slogan should be “We try a little harder to rip off foreginers”.

Bad communication, unreachable staff

I've rented a car for four days around Cappadocia, I picked it up from Nevsehir airport and left it in Kayseri. Communication was very bad and staff didn't have a good level of English which showed up to be a huge problem when I left the car. When arrived at the airport there was no indication about where to leave the car, plus when arrived at the avis spot there was no one, the service number was unreachable and the personell at the airport slow. I expected more from an international renting company.

Bu yaz tatilinde avis in sitesine girerek araba kiraladim ve Ankara Esenboga hava alanina indigimde Avis e arabami alabilmek icin başvurduğumda adima bir rezarvasyon olmadigini ve dolandirildigimi bildirdiler. Sürekli sitelerinin kopyalandigini ve insanlarin dolandirilgini söylediler, böyle olmasina rağmen kendilerinin bu konuda hiç bir girişimde bulunmadilar bir kayit dahi tutmadilar. Sadece istiyorsam tekrar daha fazla bir meblağ ödeyip yeni bir araba kiralama işlemi yapabileceklerini söylediler oysaki beni dolandiran kisinin watsapp kayitlari, ödediğim dekont ve sözde fatura vb. her şey mevcut idin. En azindan önlem alma babindan bir kayit işlemi yapabilirlerdi onu bile yapmadilar.

Miles and smiles points never added

Avis continuously advertise extra miles and smiles points for turkish airline members. Hence I chose to book with them, I put in my miles and smiles number and no points were added. i put in a request for points with avis twice and no points added. I have written 4 emails to customer complaints who keep saying they will deal with my case - no points or action, 4 months later. Bad bad service and false advertising from avis, will not use again

Kendim sahsen referans kodu uzerine bir ön ödemesi yaptim ve havliyan köpekler simdi pis pis mesajlar yaziyorlar ve eskorta kendileri kadar pis kadinlara kullanyorlar diyorlar. Dikkat etin sizde magdur kalmayin ailenizle aracsiz.

I hired MB E200d from Rize Artvin airport from 21-Jan to 26-Jan
As frequent user of hired cars, especially in Türkiye, it was one of most dreadful experience despite paying over £560 in total (second most expensive car in the list),
1) despite they had the car I wanted in the order, they tried to give me a different car BMW520)
2) they insisted and argued that they had to charge me 135TL per day for winter tyres despite not ordering - all the car hire companies offer winter tyres as a matter of choice
3) they took over an hour from the time a
I arrive at the desk until I left
4) the car wasn’t properly serviced, low engine oil lighting up on dashboard and no windscreen washer liquid at all, the car wasn’t cleaned properly on delivery
5) representative Cagayan and his manager Rafet all not fit for the job, no clue on the basic customer services, Rafet declared his kingdom in Rize airport within Avis

The car was late and we were late to the airport!

I ordered a car to the airport with a driver and baby seat on November 3rd. I called the driver's phone number they gave me through email half n hour before our pick-up time to check. The driver informed me that he had no information about our pick-up. I called Avis customer service; they made me wait on the phone for 20 minutes, only to say they could not help me. I called the driver again several times to help me because I needed to go to the airport. I took the phone number of the driver's manager, who works with Avis. He helped me over the phone and set up a driver for me, which Avis should have done. It took me an hour and a half of back-and-forth calls to do this, and I COULD DO IT SINCE I SPEAK TURKISH! However, if it were someone else who doesn't speak the language, you would surely end up with a NO-SHOW! Overall, the car rented was late for two hours, and I had to deal with the stress of fixing this problem that Avis employees' caused! I asked for compensation, and Öznur from customer relations informed me that I would not get compensated because the ride had picked us up even though two hours late.

We will make sure that we or any of our friends and family won't ever use this company again. Please do not book this company if you don't want to miss your flight. I'm highly disappointed because the price I paid was so high, this was supposed to be a luxury experience. It was hell for us.
