Baja Bound is the Real Deal

I cannot speak highly enough about the Mexico travel car insurance service that Baja Bound provides. They were there for me 1000% when I needed it. I have had Mexican car insurance through Baja Bound for many years but never had a claim. In March of this year, we were in an accident in Mexico that totalled our perfect 2023 Toyota Highlander Hybrid. The other party was at fault, (and admitted they were). The police report also stated this. We had insurance with a Mexican company (initials begin with H and end with I), and so did the party at fault. We both filed claims. We both talked to the insurance company’s investigator who contacted us. This investigator told us it was a simple case of the other party turning in front of us without the right of way and that we should receive our payout soon. Two months later, we were told by the insurance company that "the accident didn't happen" as reported, and that the claim wasn't going forward. That was all the info we could get. Having never made a major insurance claim before, I did not know that good insurance agents should and will advocate for their clients in case of an accident. I reached out to Baja Bound in desperation, and I am so grateful I did. After reviewing the details of the accident, Hank and Yara of Baja Bound understood that a mistake was being made. These two spent countless hours over the course of several months meeting with me and with the insurance company. They got details of why this company was claiming the accident “didn’t happen” as reported. This enabled me and the party at fault (now working together) to gather our own evidence to refute the absurd and outrageous claims of the insurance company. Unlike the agent for the party at fault, who did NOTHING to help his client get her claim paid, Hank and Yara took the evidence we gathered all the way up the chain of command to the very top of the insurance corporation, until they finally agreed to pay the claim. There were several times when I was ready to give up. Hank and Yara literally begged me to allow them to keep fighting for us! I am so glad I put my trust in them. Together we got the job done. If not for them, we would have been out more than 50,000 dollars and/or have been forced to engage in a lengthy and costly legal battle. Baja Bound is the real deal!

They told me not to worry after my incident in Mexico, of course I did. Silly me, they talked me down as well as through the process. They were extremely responsive to my inquiries as well as the repair centers. Key for one’s sanity and timely repair, they were without fault. If you’re in Mexico, have an incident and are insured by Baja Bound, “don’t worry!”

Car Insurance that doesn't work

We had taken out car insurance for Mexico online through Bajabound. Not just liability, but extended (partial comprehensive). This was supposed to cover further damage and was accordingly expensive.
Basically, Bajabound makes a good impression - a Bajabound employee also tried to help us a lot.
Bajabound is, however, only a kind of intermediary. The actual insurance company with which you then have the contract is Chubb. And that resulted in fatal problems for us.
We had a broken windshield due to stone chips. And then fate took its course:
Reporting the damage to Chubb. Only possible by phone. As an overlander from the road, this is a challenge with and without a connection.
We managed to get hold of someone from Chubb, but communication in English was difficult. I wanted to open a claim. That didn't work by phone. I asked if it was possible to do that online or by email. And yes, I got a claim email address. Great, I thought, then email and report the damage straight away, asking for confirmation of receipt.
Hmm, after three days no response or confirmation. So I called Bajabound to say that nothing had happened since I reported the damage. OK, they wanted to call them. Then I got the answer that Chubb had not received a damage report from me. Errr, I sent the email I had sent to Bajabound. Chubb obviously doesn't know Bajabound's contract number. After a few days I got a reply from Chubb saying that I could only report the claim by phone, email doesn't work and doesn't count. What???
I explained how it happened and that I was told to do it that way. Then I was asked to prove that I had called and then emailed. Wow, what shady people.
I copied my phone history with the call number and sent it to Chubb. Then the question came up, I was no longer in Mexico. But the claim had to be submitted in Mexico. Yes, of course not in Mexico anymore, but only because no one from Chubb responded to my calls and emails reporting the damage. That was all reported from Mexico. It felt like 100 emails went back and forth until I could convince the Chubb people and prove things.
In the end, Chubb awarded me $170 to repair the windshield.
If you think that's the end of it - haha, you're wrong. Now comes the best part.

I was then given about 5 forms to print out, fill out, sign and email back. A real challenge on the road. But personal details, car details again, agreement that the €170 is covered, and finally my bank details.
So, nothing should go wrong now...
Then an email came. No, it's not possible, they couldn't transfer the money to my account in Germany. They can't transfer money to Germany and Canada....What???
I should open a separate account, an EUA account, for that. What??? I explained that this account can be used internationally from anywhere. All institutions from all over the world make transfers here. No, it wouldn't work. Errr...
There followed a lot of email exchanges with suggestions, tips, opening your own account in the USA, using a relative's US account, who would then have to fill out all the Chubb paperwork again in her name plus provide her ID proof and send it to Chubb. All of this is not feasible, especially if you are still in Central America. Opening a US account without a permanent residence in the USA is practically impossible from, for example, El Salvador.
The conclusion is: This insurance is not suitable for overlanders. Hands off! (except for US citizens with US accounts).

Bajabound also shares responsibility, because they sell an insurance that basically doesn't work. A legal review of the process would be interesting to see to what extent and who has to pay compensation.

We purchased an annual policy so that we could drive to Mexico. The process of obtaining the coverage was straightforward online. We did have some issues with customer service to switch our vehicle on file when we sold our car but Ultimately they were able to take care of it.

Worse than worthless

Purchased the highest, most expensive coverage they offer. Car got broken into and belongings stolen. Had to call Baja Bound 8 times before someone picked up. Called the English-speaking line, but the person who answered didn’t speak English. Finally got transferred to someone who spoke English, but he refused to meet us at the scene, instead making us drive over an hour to an unlit parking lot in Tijuana in the middle of the night. Put in our claim and Baja Bound covered nothing. Would never recommend.

Antwort von Baja Bound Mexican Insurance

Skye, we apologize for the issues you had contacting Chubb. Unfortunately personal belongings are not covered by our policies, nor are they covered by any auto insurance in Mexico or the United States. This is a common question we get and we always recommend you look at your renters or homeowners insurance for that type of coverage. Many homeowners policies cover personal belongings worldwide.
