Only put a dog here

I have worked here and realised that the management is protected by the chain. I have witnessed residents getting injured, and it's been covered up. If CQC were to investigate, they would find that at least three residents were injured in the last six months, and it was covered up. At least six good staff members have resigned after raising concerns because Barchester didn't listen. The deputy manager has disappeared after raising concerns about bad practices. A resident who raised concerns with CQC is now being asked to find another place to live. Be wary. Don't put your family here or get a job at this place. Ask yourself why so many staff members have left in the last 12 months. Barchester is shameless and don't deserve to have a licence to look after vulnerable people. Do some digging into Hilderstone Hall and I guarantee you that the Home will be shut down.

Maple Leaf Lodge, Grantham

My mother stayed at Maple Leaf Lodge for 8 weeks. The home initially impressed me with its luxurious appearance but it soon felt more corporate than homely. The decor was coordinated but lacked the warmth and homeliness my mum needed. The sensory room and bathroom, though well-designed, were rarely used.
Staffing levels were insufficient, leaving many residents, including my mum, without the necessary assistance. The memory lane unit, housing 30 residents, was overwhelming for those in the early stages of dementia, and my mum deteriorated. Many design flaws, such as poorly arranged en-suites, made her stay more difficult.
After moving my mum to a different home with better staffing, smaller units, and a more homely environment, her well-being significantly improved. While the care staff at Maple Leaf Lodge were kind, the issues seem systemic. I'd appreciate if Barchester shared their response to this review with the CQC.

AVOID AT ALL COSTS

Excellent Care Home

We moved our Mother into Barchester Oulton Park last Year and we cannot praise the staff enough, from auxiliary to management. They work together as a team and seem happy in their job as carers. The staff have many good qualities like kindness, attentiveness and empathy, and are always very respectful to both residents and their families. The home and it's surroundings are inviting and very homely, it hasn't got such a 'clinical' feel to it as they have good carpets and home furnishings, complete with cafe area with free tea, coffee and cakes etc. I would highly recommend this care home for anyone's loved ones.

This company doesn’t even deserve a 1…

This company doesn’t even deserve a 1 star, care inspectors have been in for the terrible conditions clients and the lack of care given. The new management that took over have been so unprofessional about trying to get hours, logins and training ,and was very disrespectful to me when I went to seek help. (Mark Hurst) avoid this company at all costs as you will find a team of incompetent management,admin and head office.

Great place for peace of mind care

My dad had been let down by Stoke Mandeville Hospital twice before they finally got him on a ward and treated him properly. There was no way he could go home on discharge so with some help from the discharge nurse we found a space at Hempton Field Carehome in Chinnor. Unfortunately my dad was only in there 2 weeks before he died but Joy and her team made those 2 weeks the best they could. He had excellent care and amazing food. When I asked him did he want to stay there it was a firm yes. When I went in to see dad just after he died, Joy took time out to not only come to the room with me to see dad but also sit down and chat over a cup of tea. Great place and a great team.

Five stars for advertising, zero for care

Hampton Court Care home, Peterborough.

My mother was a resident at this care home, but died in December '23.

When my mother passed away, she initially became unresponsive, but the care home did not notice, and when informed, they claimed she was "asleep". When the senior carer could not wake her, she showed disinterest and left her to get on with other duties, still claiming my mother was asleep.

When the family INSISTED, something was done, an ambulance was called, but even then, serious and vital misinformation was given to the 999 call handler and also to the paramedics when they arrived, indeed, they were lied to. It was discovered that the call bell had been unplugged and removed from my mother's room, so prior to falling into unresponsiveness, she was unable to summon help, distressingly, we will never know if she tried to get help or not.

My mum died later that day in hospital A&E, without ever regaining consciousness. The level of care afforded my mother was completely unacceptable. The call bell alert system had been disconnected and removed from my mother's room. The staff senior member was unhelpful, rude (also rude and unhelpful to the paramedics)and uncaring. The senior staff member deliberately gave false and misleading information to the 999 call handler and the paramedics when they arrived.

Months on, I have still not had an explanation of when or why my mother's "buzzer" had been disconnected and removed. To be fair, some of the more junior staff were very caring towards my mother during her stay and treated her as though she was their own mum, so not all the staff are bad. If you are considering using this home for a loved one, be very careful. They present a great front, but behind the facade and sales pitch, it is a very, very different place.

We had a meeting with the Dep Manager…

We had a meeting with the Dep Manager at The Spires, Lichfield today. She was very helpful and reassuring regarding my mother’s care. All the staff do their best in sometimes very challenging circumstances. The home is always spotlessly clean and the residents are well cared for.

Culture of management bullying with unprofessional practices ..especially general manager who really has zero care or compassion for relatives or staff ,really doesn't represent barchester well ...cqc informed in more detail of certain practices with evidence

My mother had respite care at the…

My mother had respite care at the Barchester Cumberland Grange. I would not recommend respite care there to anyone. Despite creating a care plan they initially failed to follow it. One day she was not washed or given breakfast until afternoon. I complained and was told she did not have a ‘chart’, we asked for her care to be charted and things improved somewhat - but latterly they stopped bothering tracking key things like fluid intake. Housekeeping was poor. Her bedlinen was washed once in a month and her room cleaned rarely. And worst of all they offered to add her to the rota of the GP who refused to take her on.

The home moved my mother upstairs during her stay, which we agreed - but once moved they failed to tell her the code for using the lift. They promised to move her on the Tuesday then did nothing til the Thursday leaving her bewildered about what was going on - the manager did not communicate well throughout.

A number of the care staff were very pleasant and good so I came to the conclusion the home was poorly managed and understaffed - my mother was told on one occasion by a carer that the home had once run like ‘clockwork’ but not any more and that this was a staffing issue. I raised my concerns twice during mum’s stay and at the end - the clinical lead’s response was ‘there’s a limit to what we can do’.

I am giving two stars because the home was very good at activities and several carers really good and kind. However nice cupcakes is no substitute for actual care, decent housekeeping and following processes.

Think twice before sending a member of…

Think twice before sending a member of your family to a Barchester Home. Melbourn Springs looks very shiny and modern but the level of care given to my Mum during a recent respite stay was awful. She was dirty, her hair had not been washed for days, they couldn't be bothered to put in her denture and left her sitting in a chair all day that did not meet her needs. I complained and they put all the blame on my Mum and a member of staff that no longer works there. I am appalled by their care but they don't seen to be bothered. Never again.

Safeguarding concerns currently being…

Safeguarding concerns currently being investigated by the Local Authority.

My family is a resident at a Barchester home. We have raised concerns regarding cleanliness, which is a continuing problem even after 18 months.
Other residents have been able to get into my family member’s room and steal their belongings, showing that the staff are not managing patients appropriately.
Understanding of the Mental Capacity Act is not as good as it should be considering that they offer dementia support and no Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards are in place, meaning that my family member is prevented from leaving the address without any legal framework in place.

Family member was left without a duvet for a number of nights, despite us raising the issue.
We were not told about Funded Nursing Care, meaning my family member has been paying an extra £219 p/w than they need to.
The CQC and Local Authority are currently investigating a number of other concerns, including around the physical treatment of my family member and another resident.
Not long after raising our concerns with CQC and Local Authority my family member was given an eviction notice.
I could not in good conscience recommend Barchester for your loved one.

AVOID

I worked in Epsom one,after i complaint about the care giving in this place they invite to leave. It is like a mafia with all the old permanent staff. Dementia unit and all the floor is like a Horror movie. After how much the residents paying the care is zero and awful. Stay away....

Keep your relatives AWAY FROM HERE ! …

If I could give 0 review would be too much ! I was not allowed to see my Mother for the last FIVE weeks of her life , she died 45 minutes after I last saw her on the day of her death. These low life despicable excuses for people should be held to account! They are VILE ! Wish I could really state my opinions !

Sports car in blue badge space without a badge

I only came on to report that when I visited on Sunday there was a sports car in the blue badge space without a blue badge. I took a photo so it can be identified but there doesnt appear to be a facility to attach it. However I have been absolutely shocked by the reviews on here and will now be more alert to the conditions where our family member lives. Our main concerns so far have been about admin issues especially where reports contain a lot of inaccuracies about the history of our family member and his relationships. I think unannounced visits are probably the way to go for all relatives and friends of residents in these places

Residents aren't receiving not even near to proper care.

DONT WORK FOR THIS COMPANY OR BRING YOUR LOVED ONE TO BARCHESTER HEALTHCARE.

Please avoid if you wish to maintain your dignity. It is not worth to work with this company. There is a lack of appreciation, unfair treatment, lack of adequate response to your concerns, constant blame culture.
