Bad mechanical and faulty electrical work.
It's hard to find accessories for 2024 Ford Rangers. The dealer tried and failed to get a topper (camper shell), and at first this company (Big Sky Toppers in Bozeman) said they weren't available. Dealer gave up. Big Sky got one and installed it in a reasonable amount of time. Two stars for that. But they returned my truck with 26 fault codes and the dashboard lit up with failure indicators, then denied having anything to do with it. I had to pay the dealer to diagnose the problem (loss of data on a data bus), only to find out that Big Sky "figured out" which wire to use by cutting into the insulation on all the wires in the harness. That could have caused a short, did cause a temporary loss of data signal, and would over time have corroded. I paid over $500 to have the dealer repair the damage after Mike told me that was fine, no problem, normal install, dealer didn't know what he was doing. Once I got my vehicle back (after weeks of waiting) I poked around and found the power outlet they installed with something like 20 AWG wire would not power much of anything. 5 amp load, like a portable refrigerator, drops the voltage under 10 and either equipment turns off or gets damaged by undervoltage. Wires were strung above and below the fuel tank brackets, some in split loom and some unprotected from brush or rocks under the vehicle. They pushed out a rubber boot and strung wires through the driver side floor, so there was a 1.5" hole where road spray could soak into the carpet. They spliced wires behind the rear wheels, with crimp connectors that were not waterproof. Between the unsealed connections (which would corrode) and the wrong wire size (should have been 3 or 4 times the diameter), the power outlet was unusable. I'm an electrical engineer who has built an RV out of a Sprinter by myself, so I know how wrong this install was.
Also, the hinge supports were not tight and one screw actually fell out allowing the gas shock to twist and jam. The latches were not adjusted so one side had to be slammed. The center brake light was not sealed so water could come in.
In summary, they cut every corner possible resulting in my vehicle warranty being void without expensive repairs. It was a bad install of a good (Leer) product, and they were rude about their claims of proper workmanship when I tried to get them to acknowledge/fix it. They wouldn't even pay the $260 diagnostic fee to clear their error codes.
