After much deliberation (it ain't cheap!) we bought a Charlie oven at the start of the summer and its been in pretty much continual use since. I loved cooking on it and its been fantastic for entertaining. Its large and versatile so you can cook multiple things at once. So we jumped at the chance to attend the Charlie Cooking retreat last week @ Trevellion House. We had the BEST time. It was lovely to meet Tara and Neil in person, the hosting from Jonny and Alan @ Trevellion was fantastic and the tips and tricks from Jay and the famous Fire Cooking Chris were invaluable. Lots of new recipes and techniques to try on our Charlie. But maybe best of all was the chance to socialise and exchange cooking tips with other Charlie owners.. we're an eclectic bunch and I'm sure we'll all stay in touch. It was fun and laughs all the way, and the food was to die for! Hope to make it next year! Highly Recommended!!

First class service throughout and the oven is perfect - Works exactly as described and a joy to use.

Great customer service. Issue with ordering roasting lid was problematic. Tara included the lid with the rest of the order at no charge. I own two Charlie ovens in an ever growing outdoor cooking space. Never regret my decision to purchase such a solid product.

The oven was delivered on the agreed day and time slot. It was very securely fastened to the pallet. In the end, it was placed in front of our garage because the delivery driver wasn't able to maneuver the pallet over a small step.

We then moved the oven in ourselves the next day and rolled it off the pallet. We built a small ramp, which made it very easy and safe. It would be a good idea to include a wooden ramp with the delivery. I'm familiar with this practice from computer system deliveries.

I haven't fired up the oven yet because we have a strict fire ban due to the drought. I'll post an update as soon as I do.

The fire ban was finally lifted.

We've used the Charlie twice since then.

On the first evening, we baked a pizza. It was very good, and it cooked really quickly in the oven.

On the second evening, we cooked a double pork chop with vegetables. It was yummy again.

To simplify the planning, I used ChatGPT to create a detailed schedule for me. It worked well.

I am very happy with the master class I attended with the Charlie team and Mark O'Brien. I picked up many new skills and new ways to use my Charlie oven at home. I have been to three masterclasses now and they never dissapoint.

From the first time seeing this product, to the exceptional customer service, the products speak for themselves, big bold bright colours- well built British product- website so easy to view and purchasing is a simple task- maybe alittle to easy - I feel like I want to buy more-
great communication and delivered on time by some very polite and professional delivery company which went above and beyond to help position Charlie into its forever home.
Fantastic step by step guides to help all people on the steps to joining the Charlie family- so many amazing recipes to try also- once we have mastered the art- we will definitely be joining the weekend retreats to discover so much more

super product - well designed and made in UK (big attarctions for me) but very poor customer service. ordered one in May. Sespite chasing on delivery didnt get a response for 3 or so weeks with exception of automatic computer generated holding emails. Finally sent an email again on 5th June enquiring on delivery and requesting what the company describes as a "white glove" delivery ie assistance with unpacking and moving in situ. I have specfically requested this when placing the order. The oven weighs best part of 200kg so unless you have a household of several burly young men a 'kerbside' delivery is useless. I finally got a response from the co founder Tara saying the oven had been dispatched that morning, was arriving the following morning and no white glove service available. I immediately complained that i should have received more notice (to ensure I was in) and that a kerbside delivery of a 200kg product (in cluding packaging) wasnt going to work for obvious reasons. I got nothing. I now have a 200kg of product and packaging on my drive way with no ability to move it!! The Charlie oven is a great product for sure but its pitched at a premium price point - £6,000 - so I think its reasonable to expect a premium service. The company doesnt live up to that. I suspect they may be a victim of their own success - taken on too many orders with no back office to process them properly. Beware - that is a cause of many of a new companys failure! The cofounder I am afraid shouldnt be in a customer facing role -I am afraid to say she did really show any concern whatsover. She was very happy to make her problem mine at the blink of an eye

Very pleased with my new Charlie Oven Charcoal that I bought last week for a big birthday celebration. Great quality, looks fantastic and has already had plenty of use! Huge thanks to Bill and the team at North Outdoor Living & BBQ Kent for all the advice and excellent customer service — really knowledgeable, helpful and made choosing the right setup easy. Would definitely recommend.

I’m lucky enough to have a large commercial oven and it is next level good. It’s used at least once a week all year round. My fav place is In the garden with something cooking.
Did the bread course at Tara’s house and it was brilliant.

After coveting a Charlie oven for over a year, we finally made the decision on the colour (all so gorgeous) and took delivery in July 2024. It's the best thing we have ever bought and such a conversation piece. We use it far more than we ever used a bbq or similar and since we moved house and are renovating, it is now our only oven. We have certainly put it through it paces over the past 5 months and it's been a life saver especially when entertaining. Great personal customer service from Tara, Neil and the team.

This oven blows me away every time I use it. Having multiple levels to cook food is a game changer. Got a large crowd over? You can spin burgers and sauages out in no time whilst easily keeping meat and vegetarian food separate. A leg of lamb on a meat hook is to die for, defintiely the best I have ever cooked. Now, if they can figure how to get a rotating wing basket in there...

we brought the charlie carcoal oven and the charlie outdoor island cabinet ,great product easy to use well made ,cooks your food perfect with that charcoal flavour added ,we would recommend these products to anyone who loves food and cooking ,lots of fun charlie is part of or family .

I ordered my Charlie after several chats with Tara who was so helpful at every stage. I needed delivery to the south of France and eventually delivery took place but was delayed by French customs and the delivery agent. Was it worth the wait....I think so. I have only really got to start using it as we needed a patio laid at our house to give us a level area.
Charlie certainly gets attention and people are fascinated by its design and attractive looks.
Good charcoal is key and here I use Big K which can be used a couple of times and retains and produces good heat.
I am only really setting out on the journey of usage but in the past few days greek spatchcock chicken with lemon and oregano potatoes, pizzas in minutes with easily achievable 400 degrees, veg chilli, beautiful Black Sea Bream like you would have at a top notch restaurant. I wish I lived in the UK because I would definitely go on a cooking day/weekend.
Yes they cost quite a bit but it truly is a great product so well designed and a real feature.
In future I would like to see an Charlie Oven cookbooks of recipes in publication. I know the recipes are online but that would be great.

“I have had my Charlie oven for three weeks and I need to report on this marvel!

I am a keen cook with a passion for baking bread and pastries. I love outdoor cooking despite the Cumbrian weather.

Pre-Charlie I had the following outdoor kit.

A fabulous firebrick wood fired oven with sandstone surround, cast iron door and steam system. Capable of baking 12 loaves of bread – if you have a whole day to spare.
Gas plancha and BBQ grill.
Large wood pellet smoker (electric).
Large kettle charcoal BBQ with rotisserie.
Gas pizza oven
Japanese Konro grill with Asado attachment.

I am about to sell the gas pizza oven, but with the exception of my precious wood fired oven I have already sold everything else!

Why?

The first test of my Charlie was to bake bread. I had made a batch of loaves which I intended to bake in my commercial deck oven, but I kept one loaf to bake in the Charlie. Quickly reached 230 degrees and held that temperature. A perfect bake and apart from the very pleasant slight hint of smoke no difference from the loaves baked in the commercial oven. Timing much the same.

Next cook was two 1.5kg porterhouse steaks. I purchased the Parrilla v grill as I knew from using the Asado it would stop flare up. The problem with the Konro Asado is that it only works well on a warm day without a lot of wind (a rarity in the Lake District).

Perfect results again. The steaks were thick enough to grill with the door closed other than when turning them. A wireless probe thermometer is a must.

Whilst the steaks were resting, I threw some asparagus and broccoli (lightly coated with olive oil) on the Parilla. Grilled with the door open because they were done in a few minutes. Charred, cooked, but still crunchy was how my wife described them.

Next was two small chickens cooked at mid height with a chunk of apple to generate smoke. On a higher rack was a dish of Lyonnaise potatoes (thank you Charlie for a great recipe) and at the end I again char grilled some asparagus and broccoli. Faultless and the chicken was not over smoked and very moist.

Time to try pizza and I made the dough following the excellent New York style recipe from Charlie.
The Charlie took marginally longer to reach 380 degrees than the gas pizza oven but was much faster than my traditional wood fired oven. What I liked. Not having to carefully check that the pizza was burning or having to turn them. Baking time was around 4 minutes. As good a pizza as I have ever baked.

Now for my first failure. I had decided to slow roast a hanging leg of lamb for dinner on the evening after I had baked pizza for lunch. I am used to BBQ’s cooling down quickly and foolishly thought that if I closed the Charlie vents it would cool down to 120 degrees in 2 to 3 hours. Not a chance. After one hour it was down to 250 degrees and after another hour down to 200 degrees which it maintained for the next hour.

So, the lamb was cooked at 200 degrees for 2 hours. Even with the vents closed Charlie held that temperature for the whole of the cooking time. The lamb was perfect, light smoke and still moist. The downside. The vegetables in the roasting tray below the lamb and close to the coals became carbon so no gravy base!

I am writing this during Easter, and my last cook was the day of storm “Dave”. A six kilo turkey, roasted at 180 degrees as per the Charlie recipe. A quick dash outside to put the turkey in, avoiding the flying garden furniture. Again the temperature probe was a must, as I could monitor the cooking on my phone. Moist turkey breast, a rarity.

I shall not miss all the ugly outdoor cooking kit, and I have no doubt the Charlie will do a perfect job. My wood fired oven is a lovely feature, but I doubt I will use it again. I will continue to bake bread in my commercial oven only because I bake large batches of loaves and appreciate the automatic steam function for sourdough.

Finally, the service from Charlie ovens was excellent and the recipes are a great addition.”

I purchased a Cheeky Charlie (the table top variant) together with a number of accessories. Communication with Neil and Tara has been excellent throughout, the oven is fantastic, I really cannot recommend it highly enough. For comparison I also have a Kamado Joe Big Joe, a Whistler gas grill and had a Gozney Dome. The Charlie is the best built and can easily do the jobs of all the other bbq I own! The family are all big fans of the pizzas we made recently!

My Charlie oven is without doubt the best outdoor cooking kit I’ve ever bought ……. By a billion miles. The build quality is fantastic and I use it for everything. It gets used 4 or 5 days a week from steaks to pizzas to bread to full roasts. It’s changed the way I cook completely. Utterly brilliant
