I usually don’t write public reviews but in this case I make an exception, This week we went for afternoon tea priced at £95 pp as a birthday treat. In addition, we were charged a 15% non-negotiable service charge and an extra £5 per cup for the type of tea I selected, plus £10 for bottle of still water. The final tab was just shy of £250 for two.
Three of the “pastries” were neat piles of sludge. The first nestled atop a thin biscuit, the second huddled in a macaroon, the third was perched on a plinth of some kind of shortcrust. We each took one bite but neither of us could finish them as we found the texture and taste unpleasant, nay, almost vomit-invoking.
The definition of pastries is small cakes made using pastry so I was expecting at least a glimmer of something resembling a small dextrously-crafted pastry along the lines of a danish, croissant or choux. Non of these were present.
My main bugbear, though, was that we kept having to request more tea and the situation was made worse as there was no little pot of hot water as a means of topping up. Apart from the first cup (the one with the extra charge), the tea got progressively weaker so that by the end, we were drinking what could be described as hot water.
Perhaps I should have complained, but in retrospect I believe I was in shock. In addition I found the waiter difficult to understand due to his broad accent, requiring repeated “pardon?’s”.
There was no “wow” factor, not even in the decor which struck us as tired and in need of a revitalising. I don’t expect Claridges to be a contender for the Afternoon Tea Awards anytime soon.
Nauseatingly, we paid a lot of money for what should have been a fab time, but was sadly unenjoyable, and this makes the price all the harder to bear.
How they can improve? Make better tea, offer lots of tea refills and ensure attentiveness is sufficient to guarantee this happens. Ensure staff can communicate well. Include more pastry in the pastries. Make clear the 15% service charge when booking.

Very disappointed with our experience outside Claridge's last Saturday.
I was the chauffeur for a lovely couple who had booked their wedding reception at the hotel. After arriving from the church in a classic Bentley, their dream was to take a few photos in front of the hotel with the Claridge's sign and flags in the background before going inside.
Unfortunately, we were met by extremely rude and unfriendly doormen who immediately started shouting at us to move the car. This completely spoiled a very special moment for the bride and groom, who were visibly upset.
A little kindness and understanding would have made all the difference. It was a very disappointing welcome to what should have been one of the happiest moments of their day.

We visited London on the 29th of April and had afternoon tea in Claridges. Every moment from start to finish was perfect. The hotel is an Art Deco masterpiece. Stunning ! We had drinks in the bar. I had the flapper cocktail. The original cocktail of Claridges.
Afternoon tea was beautifully presented and our Waiter Redin was so knowledgable about the hotel history. He kept us topped up with lots of lovely tea all afternoon

We stayed at Claridge’s as a Birthday treat and we were very kindly upgraded to a suite, which was absolutely beautiful. All staff were extremely kind and helpful. We had afternoon tea, which was lovely. The waiter looked after us extremely well and could not do enough for us. A top 5 star luxury hotel.

Visited last Saturday, had to que for a few minutes before being allowed in.
My purchase was a Country Loaf £6.00 and 2 x Marmite Cheese Straws.
There was no slicing machine available on site (apparently one is on the way).
At home I'm not exaggerating when I tell you my bread knife buckled trying to cut through this crusty bread, my right arm ached (which I had taken a video to show you). Sorry but if this is what Richard Hart and Claridge's are offering then I'll be sticking with my fav Gail's Seeded Sourdough and Wasteless Sourdough.
Ending on a positive note the Marmite Cheese Straws were amazing!

Superb afternoon tea.Started with a glass of champagne then Beautiful finger sandwiches , lovely Christmas pudding ( which I don’t normally like!)scones and a good selection of cakes. Service excellent attentive but not hovering. The best afternoon tea I’ve had.

Afternoon tea in an elegant environment is what to expect as normal in central London. The selection of teas are fun. Cakes adequate. Scones abysmal - again. This is not a one off stale scone problem. Price competitive. Staff helpful.

Clean , economical and practical.
Pleasant & Professional Staff.
All the expected amenities.
Nicely located for the Metro.
15 /20 minute Uber to both The Metropolitana and The Bernabau.

Such a very wonderful and memorable experience. Sometimes in life when you look forward to something so much, it does not always meet your expectations. Not so with Claridges! From the wonderful people at Reception, the Restaurant, the Spa and the Fumoir all went to make a very special stay. Thank you.

Another 5 star review for another wonderful stay at this TOP LONDON HOTEL. Faultless service. Friendly staff. Beautifully presented food. Everything is so clean. Stunning spa & pool, at a perfect temperature. Nothing is ever too much trouble for them. WE LOVE IT HERE. Thank you. This is the fourth time I have stayed with my friend. See you next year.
Special thank you to Loretta (breakfast room) and the tall thin lad with a bit of a beard who works in the small bar next to the afternoon tea room, the short asian man with spikey hair in the breakfast room, the young Irish lad on reception, and of course all the excellent boys on the door. THANK YOU.

We had afternoon tea here today, it was so lovely, the staff can’t do enough, the food was delicious and came home with a doggy bag (I’m sure they would use a posher term), it’s made our week of birthday celebrations start of on a high
