Densho – Traditional Japanese Art, Hand-Selected in Japan Densho (伝承, "passing on tradition") is a specialist online gallery for traditional Japanese art, based in Germany and shipping worldwide. Since 2016 we have been sourcing authentic Japanese paintings, calligraphy and ceramics piece by piece in Japan – from auction houses, private collectors, workshops and Zen temples. The heart of our collection is the kakemono (kakejiku): Japanese hanging scrolls with hand-painted landscapes, birds and flowers, Zen and Buddhist motifs, sumi-e ink painting and shodo calligraphy on silk and washi paper. Alongside scrolls we offer makuri and shikishi paintings and a carefully chosen range of Japanese ceramics for tea and sake lovers: chawan tea bowls, yunomi, guinomi sake cups, tokkuri flasks and vases in classic traditions such as Raku, Shino, Bizen, Hagi, Oribe, Seto and Kutani. Japanese lacquerware, Buddha statues and Daruma figures complete the range. Almost everything we sell is a handmade, one-of-a-kind piece, from antique works to pieces by contemporary Japanese artists and potters. Each item is photographed in detail and described honestly, including artist, age, signature and condition where known. The few prints in kakemono format are always clearly labelled as prints. What you can expect from us: - Every item is in stock and shipped promptly from Germany, with no customs duties within the EU - Careful, insured packaging for scrolls, ceramics and lacquerware - Personal advice from the two founders - A shop available in English, German, French, Italian, Spanish and Polish More than 2,000 artworks have found new homes with collectors, tea practitioners and lovers of Japanese aesthetics, and many of our customers return.
