If you haven’t been to this part of the world before it’s a great introduction to some of the highlights. You certainly get to experience some fabulous scenery. It’s difficult not to feel like there isn’t enough time at each place but that isn’t the fault of the tour - it’s designed as a day trip to each Lake. This is all by coach and there are some early breakfasts. So it feels a bit hectic but the relaxation is in the coach journeys and evenings back at the hotel. As a Great Rail Journeys tour the actual rail travel was surprisingly not as enjoyable as expected. We thought we would be avoiding the airport stress but the Eurostar border control and boarding experience was no better in either London or Paris. There was no advantage to being part of a group. The train between Paris and Turin does not leave the same station as the Eurostar so there is a coach transfer but the coach driver does not find you - we had to follow the tour manager for some distance on foot searching for the coach in the backstreets of the Paris station. The same happened in Turin and on the return journey in Paris. There were problems with reserved seats - some prearranged bookings are still outside the control of GRJ (didn’t know this) - the Eurostar tickets/seat numbers got changed on the day, which was unnerving and increased the sense of chaos and stress which spoiled the beginning and end of the holiday.

Lakes Orta and Maggiore are close to one another with just a half hour coach trip between the two. We chose not to take the trip to lake Como as it was too far by coach making it too long a day.
The places we visited were varied and beautiful but the coach travel to them was too long.
Great trip. Long journeys but through great countryside. Sit back and relax on the trains. Be prepared with food and drink. Yours excellent, hotel very good and food too. Great Tour Manager. Also time to relax.
This trip was very tiring and a bit chaotic. Trying to find the correct coaches in various places could do with looking at. The trip home was too long, starting at our hotel on lake Orta at 05.00 in the morning and going all the way to StPancras, arriving at nearly 21.oo. (Too late and too tired for dinner) was far too much we should have had a stop over somewhere. This is our third GRJs trip and by far the worst one. Our tour manager was very good and did her very best for us. Train tickets were also moved around, so not always sitting next to your partner without a bit of juggling. We enjoyed ourselves but probably our last train trip.
Absolutely wonderful holiday. Tour guide was informative and great to have around when train times changed. We just waited to be told what was happening and where we needed to be. Hotels were superb and daily trips amazing. Only downside was the long 1st days journey to Turin. Apparently there was a stop over in France on previous tours but that would have meant a longer journey the next day??? It wouldn't put me off going again.
Stunning scenery. Wonderful hotel. Fantastic places to visit.
Lovely views
The Great Train Journey was only transporting us to the destination and back. No other trains were involved during the week. The big group in the hotel meant we had to sit at back of restaurant, ordering from a different menu. The food was disappointing. The roof top bar was the same. We were herded into an area all together and weren’t allowed the freedom to sit where we wanted. The hotel staff were lovely and the hotel is in a beautiful location.
GRJ are a fantastic way to travel. However, it is not necessarily easy! One needs to be prepared to travel light for probably 2 days out and the same back. The days at ‘Base’ (4 to 5 days) are generally quite relaxing but to get the best benefit one needs to do most (if not all) the planned excursions. If one requires a lot of luggage, I suggest sending this on to the ‘Base’ hotel has lugging it by rail is not easy. Depending on the trip the excursions may not necessarily be by rail, but by coach.
Once we arrived at our base hotel, we had a wonderful time.
This was a fine holiday with plenty to do.The tour manager ,Kate did a really fine job, answering any questions and keeping everything in order. kind regards allan
Fantastic holiday from start to finish. Our rep Kate was amazing. Such a beautiful area of the world. So lucky to have seen it. Everything was just right.
The group at 38 people was too large. It was good to have the luggage service offered for free, but we still had to manage our luggage as far as Gare du Nord. It would have been preferable to have the service from home. There was a much longer walk that in previous years to find the coach at Gare du Nord. The hotel was excellent but we found our room was noisy at night as we were directly under the rooftop terrace and bar. The food was good with a varied menu. The itinerary was comprehensive, allowing us to see other lakes. The coach was late arriving at Gare de Lyon on the way home.
Lake Orta a perfect quiet choice; away from the congestion of Maggiore & Como. Hotel excellent. Overall, rather lengthy coach connections & final day of 4 trains was rather complex. The first leg to Brill perhaps could have been accessed by coach! ! Catherine Murphy a great guide.
Fabulous, beautiful area, peaceful but equally plenty to do and see. Some excursions cried out for less restriction on times but also a couple of wasted days. Omegna was nothing to see here, and Lugano, haven for the rich was just posh shops and a promenade. However, that said, I’d do the trip again if it has some tweaks.
Wonderful scenery. Kate was a great guide.
Wonderful time, tour guide was great!
Lovely trip with friendly group and excellent tour guide, Stella. Beautiful scenery and all the train journeys rain on time. Lovely Hotel in Turin and at Lake Orta. Look forward to going away with Great Rail holidays again, very well organised.
Everything was very well organised and planed to the detail. Unfortunately the group was very big, everything was slow and not much effort to integrate the group.
