Great discounts, but be aware of the risk when things go wrong
I've used Health Service Discounts to purchase discounted gift cards and, on the face of it, the savings can be worthwhile. However, I've recently experienced a downside that I think other users should be aware of.
I purchased a discounted Argos gift card through Health Service Discounts specifically to buy a television. Argos accepted the order, took payment and then cancelled the order due to a stock issue on their side.
The problem was that I was no longer left with my money in the bank. Instead, I was left holding Argos gift card credit. Although the balance was eventually restored to the gift card, it highlighted a risk that isn't always obvious when buying retailer gift cards through discount schemes.
When everything goes smoothly, the savings are great. But if the retailer cancels your order, the retailer goes into administration, or you simply change your mind, you may find your money tied up in gift card credit rather than being available as cash. That means you can lose flexibility and potentially be forced to spend the money with a retailer you no longer wish to use.
This wasn't really a fault of Health Service Discounts themselves, and I did receive the discounted gift card I purchased. However, the experience has made me much more cautious about buying retailer-specific gift cards, even at a discount.
My advice is to only purchase gift cards when you're confident you'll use the retailer, and to understand that "saving money" can sometimes come at the cost of flexibility if something goes wrong.

As you rightly note, the issue arose because Argos cancelled your order due to a stock issue on their side, rather than with the gift card purchase itself or Health Service Discounts.
Once a retailer gift card has been purchased, the gift card value is non-refundable and remains subject to the retailer’s terms and conditions. We appreciate that this can feel restrictive when an unrelated issue with a retailer’s order means you would have preferred the funds to be returned to your bank account.
We’re pleased that your gift card balance was eventually restored.
We’re sorry again that this experience has left you feeling this way, and we appreciate you highlighting the considerations around retailer-specific gift cards for other members.
