Not as advertised: zero fungi, viruses, or parasites detected — refunded without dispute
Bought Jona's shotgun metagenomic test ($485) specifically for its claimed strain-level resolution and detection of bacteria, fungi, viruses, and parasites. The delivered data doesn't support those claims.
The report showed zero fungi, zero viruses, zero archaea, and zero parasites — every single one of 337 detected organisms was bacterial. I have a documented, deliberately maintained parasite colony of six years' standing, listed in their own reference file, reported as completely absent. Every non-zero value in the file is also an exact multiple of the same fraction (1/9990), meaning nothing below roughly 0.01% abundance can be detected at all — incompatible with any claim of deep, comprehensive sequencing.
The organism count is also inflated by counting. Their FAQ claims 300-500 organisms per typical report and "10-20x more organisms than other tests." My report listed 337 entries, but that's the same set of reads counted seven different ways (phylum, class, order, family, genus, species, strain) — the actual number of distinct species was 131, far fewer than what a same-sample 16S test and a separate shotgun test from another lab both found.
When I raised these issues, support took over two weeks to respond, gave three different, inconsistent read-depth figures across two emails, and ultimately said the explanation came from an unnamed third-party lab using a "proprietary pipeline" they couldn't detail further.
To their credit, they refunded the full amount without argument once I laid out the specifics in writing. But the product itself did not deliver what was advertised.
