The customer service of MAV in english is just incompetent and very shady. I forgot my luggage on an austrian train in Vienna with keys, laptop, ipad, work-id etc. which travelled further to Budapest, so MAV took over. I called immediately when it was still en route but they yet they claimed they couldn’t locate it either on the train or in their system. I called 10 times over several days, always hearing the same scripted words. Then my hungarian colleague called, suddenly, they were immediately able to find it by my name, the brand of the backpack and also the content of the backpack. Further, the personell was so nice to her and really tried to help her. When I picked up my belongings in Budapest, the service personell was totally unfriendly again and was not able to talk in english despite saying "yes" and "no". I found out that the luggage was located at the same day when I had lost it and was one of the first hits in the system when I checked it with her in the computer. After that, I did a test call to ask the hotline again for the lost luggage. They told me the same script of sentences that I've heard earlier. Then I confronted him with their incompetence and accusedthem that that they tried to defraud me. He felt catched and hang up. If you only speak English, skip the hotline—go to the station and check the system directly.

Unmotivated train attendant in an international train that spoke only hungarian!!

On November 17th, 2024, I faced a highly disappointing situation while traveling with MÁV-START on the RJX 12066 from Budapest Keleti to Hegyeshalom. I held a valid 1st-class MÁV-START ticket in their app, as well as a 2nd-class ÖBB ticket for the same route. Due to a delay with my earlier IC connection, I missed my scheduled train and was forced to board the RJX without a reservation.

When approached by the female train attendant, I explained my situation and showed her proof of the IC’s delay via a screenshot from the MÁV app. However, she refused to honor my 1st-class ticket, claiming I needed a reservation. I attempted to clarify that it was impossible to book a reservation through either the MÁV or ÖBB systems at that point, but she insisted on a written confirmation of the delay and refused to accept the evidence I presented.

The attendant spoke very little English and almost no German, which made the situation even more stressful. Worse, she showed no effort to assist or verify the information. Her unmotivated and dismissive attitude left me no choice but to sit in 2nd class, despite holding a valid 1st-class ticket I had paid for.

Terrible-terrible service

Terrible-terrible service. I had a direct ticket from Chop to Budapest and I was forced to change wagons twice. In Chop, I was informed that my wagon doesn’t work, as well as one more wagon, and they forced people from 3 wagons to onboard 1 wagon and said that in Zahony we would be able to change to our wagons. People with small kids were forced to stand because there were no available seats for their tickets which they purchased with seats. In Zahony, I finally found my wagon and embarked it (it was open and available to take seats on), as well as other passengers. Then, after I put my heavy suitcase in the department above my head, I was forced to move to the last wagon and take “any” seat, even though I paid for a specific window seat in a specific wagon. When I came to this wagon, I could barely find a place for myself and there was no place for my heavy suitcase in the department above. They just decided to move people from 2 wagons to 1 wagon again. What is the whole point of purchasing tickets with seats in advance?

Absolutely inhuman treatment to…

Absolutely inhuman treatment to passengers. Often the wagon where you have bought the ticket to just closed and no one knows why and passengers have to sit on the floor or somewhere else.
This is not a service, this is a total fail.

Absolutely awful

Absolutely awful. The pictures online are fake, the train is about 60 years old, dirty, smelly with no air conditioning or even sockets to plug in your devices. Also - there was literally an open door in the side of the train while we were travelling at full speed. Right beside the door to the toilet. This only scratches the surface of how truly awful this service is - the e-tickets we purchased would not scan, very little information online or anywhere regarding our train service. Only positive was the lady working on the train was very kind. Otherwise? Hell. Never again!

No one speaks english, we randomly stop every 10 minutes

No one speaks english, we were supposed to arrive to Budapest 20 minutes ago and yet we are still a hour away. We stopped in a middle of a field for an unknown reason, and when I tried to ask around and figure out what’s going on the stewards didn’t know a word of english. We were stuck in a middle of nowhere for over 30 minutes. There are no outlets in the train. If they announce something through the speakers they only say it in hungarian. I have a flight in couple of hours and I don’t know if I am going to make it but if not trust me I will even go to Brussels to get my money back. This country is full of incompetent people.

Doesn’t deserve 1 star even, customer service is absolutely inexistent. When you want to purchase a ticket for a specific date, they give you something else and makes it non refundable. Literally scammed me, as a customer of 30 euros, because of their incompetent website. I will never use their website and services again! Please avoid jegy.mav.hu as if you would have a problem they are only sending a message stating that they will solve the problem up to three months. Ridiculous and Unacceptable

Almost all minuses.

Almost all minuses.
Obsolete wagons, often dirty.
Feels like staff is working there for penalty.
Ac working at random.
Restaurant wagon looked like if crowd of hooligans left it 5m ago (it was off season so no)
Best part was when we stopped in middle of nowhere with "train driver reached max hours of driving allowed and we are waiting for the new one." Hour plus just this..

Really bad experience

I had 1 okay experience & 1 horrible experience. The train is old, smell really bad, everything is super dirty, the seats are covered in dust and dead bugs, no AC for a trip longer than 2h. Let’s not even talk about the WC.

Seriously, I have notice all over the country, especially in countryside how dirty things are, but these are public transports. Let’s have some respect for the people that travel on them - locals or foreigners.

HELL

The trip started late as usual although this time was "only" one hour late. The train stucked in Budapest station for more than 30 minutes without air conditioning and with an internal temperature around 40 degrees. No information, no support... Nothing. Finally, once we left, everything seemed to work normally but after a few km, the air conditioning stopped working again until Bratislava (where I finally got off of the train).
As Italian it reminded me of Dante's descent into the hell.
Run away from this company!!!

Catastrophical infrastructure

No curtains or outlets, old sliding windows which got stuck 1/10th pulled in↓, 1 toilet. And old, taped walls, likely train awhole as well.

Gratefully there's MÁV-START train Wi-Fi, least at the time of writing this.

Least in my case kudos to the train assistants. I doubt they knew English though.

Opposite of that to every REDACTED who did not care to close the doors to the "hallway" having the toilet. Few not even after leaving.

It’s horrible

It’s horrible. The trains are always late and there is no air conditioning. We broke down at one of the stations, they didn’t even inform us about is so we had to wait for like an hour+ to get on the next one where there were no seats available:)) I am not recommending this to anyone, mostly because if you aren’t a student or something it is way expensive. It’s too expensive and you don’t get anything in return. Hope you all think about using the train twice before you even buy a ticket:)

Kind as duck

Even if the train is empty, sitting in booked seats is not allowed, there's no air conditioning, and when you open a window, there's a high chance that employees will close it forcefully; plus, with the language barrier, good luck communicating since there's little chance they speak English.

HORRIBLE!!!!!

HORRIBLE!!!!!! On an international train, they don't speak english. They have the worst attitude, nowhere near helpful and disgusting humans. I hope they realize that what goes around comes around. Very expensive for an awful service and conditions. Never will I travel with this company again.
