What a waste of my time. I am doing up a period house and needed to replace a old hardwood floor board. I went to the Maxwells as Peterlee as I wanted a plank that was cut to size and similar to what was there. I waited for the gentleman to cut the ply wood for the customer infront and then told him what I needed and why. He told me I meant tongue and grove flooring which came in packs. I said I don’t and showed him a photo of what I needed and one of the floor board I had taken up. No tongue and groove on it. He then insisted I was wrong and told me to go and get a pack of the flooring they had. My measurements included being a depth of 25mm and no where on it was there any grove and tongue system as it was a board from about 1901. Completely furious that I took the time to go and get what I needed “professionally” cut. I have ended up getting a plank of hard wood and cutting it myself at home. Will never visit this pathetic firm again. Will go to stores like MKM who deliver for free or B&Q or similar. If I could give minus scores I would.

First appointment for measure-up cancelled on the day, long wait for second appointment then no-show and no explanation.

Update 9/10/23. Joiner turned-up this morning - nice guy but we'd already gone elsewhere. No doubt about date of appointment as my wife was with me when I made it. Was also told it would be an afternoon visit, whereas he arrived at 10:20am. Having had no response to my earlier post, Maxwells clearly don't read these reviews - draw your own conclusions from that.

Purchased a door in the fulwell branch complete with the fitting service where I paid £10 for their carpenter to come out and measure up.
Once everything was paid for, the problems started, as they hadn't been able to fit me in August we tried for September giving them x8 different dates during the week as they don't fit on Saturdays.
They couldn't fit me in to fit one door.
No guarantee for the following month so I had to have a refund and I'm out the £10 fee they charged!

Visited two branches (Jarrow and Boldon Lane). Intended to buy a few products and was, more or less, sent away from Jarrow branch without buying anything. Made my purchase at Boldon Lane branch, which was slightly better service.

The staff seem as though they have not had any customer service training, in the last decade, if ever. I expect staff in this type of store to be helpful and identify and advise the customer who has limited DIY knowledge.

Took something back to exchange for an item of lower value, and the staff member did not refund the price difference, instead he did a straight swap.

My next visit to a DIY store was a few days later at Tool Station. The customer service there was at the other end of the spectrum. I'll be going back there, rather than Maxwells.

Still waiting for online order I placed 3 weeks ago.
Shocking customer service

Chose door, door delivered and fitted, job done! No problems at all. Staff at peterlee area branch spot on. I plan on ordering 6 more and using their services again.

Very good company, I have used them various times over the years at their Birtley store. Their prices are competitive against the other DIY stores. Always been helpful when loading from their garden area, I've also used their woodcutting service numerous times which is great when you need something cutting and saves you loads of time! I also used their loft hatch supply and fit service which was very reasonablely priced, the fitter completed the job well and left no mess of damage to anything which most tradesmen nearly always leave some sort of mark behind on something.

Terrible customer service. I called and explained politely my upset as I had been waiting 3 weeks for delivery. The advisor named "Chelsea Robinson" was completely disrespectful. She denied everything, tried to cover her back then said I will now be waiting another 2 weeks and they can't refund my order. I do not advise anyone to order from them. Waste of money.

Find staff with the right attitude
Not impressed with their cutting service man. I had a number of small pieces of wood I needed cutting. There was one man in the queue behind me. The cutter said he'd do mine later that day as he needed to serve everyone else first and my job would take a while. I told him there was one man behind me and that he could go first then he could do mine. He refused staying that other customers might come along and want theirs done. He said he would ring me later that day when he managed to get mine done after everyone else. I told him not to bother and I'd take my customer else where. They've lost me as a customer.

I was looking for a particular paint brand and colour,when I stumbled across Maxwell DIY, I emailed regarding this product and they responded quickly. I explained I needed this for the weekend. I went online ordered what I needed then emailed them to let them know this was on Tuesday and my order came the following day excellent service will definitely use again

Dreadful Company AVOID - skilled fraudsters

I still haven't got my order after nearly 4 weeks - it started badly as item was claimed to be I stock when it wasn't - "the wood is in stock we just have to make it up"

Some companies have risen to covid challenges and some have hidden behind it - all it needs is honesty

Non existent customer service from this company. Over a month since placing the order with no goods. Had to chase the delivery company myself on a premium call line (DHL were no help either). Found the goods had been “lost”. Asked for replacement foods. No response, just an email stating I would be refunded within 7 days. Pointless. P**s poor customer service. What a con.

Same experience as others here, placed order a month ago, have had half the items ordered, have not heard anything about the rest of my order. Can't get in touch with anybody, just absolutely awful customer experience and service.

I placed an order on March 25th. It stated that the delivery time was 1-7 days when my order was placed. Three weeks later & I still had not received an update on my order. I tried messaging the company on Facebook. My message sent but was never read & then they turned their messages off completely so other messages failed to send. I tried calling the company but their phone just kept ringing to no answer. There was literally no way to contact them. Luckily I paid via PayPal & I now have my refund. I am pleased that I do as others have said that half of their items have been missing when eventually turning up. I have received absolutely terrible customer service. Other company’s selling similar items are managing so why aren’t these? Go elsewhere. I will never attempt to buy from these again!!

I have finally had contact when I requested a refund via PayPal - I suggest anyone still waiting that paid via PayPal does this.

Donor buy from these guys! We order a months ago and no trace of the profucts or the refund. We called , sent emails , facebook msg, but nobody replies with a solution. We have to call our bank to report this to get our money back...

Bought from them online over 2 weeks ago and items not shipped. Asked customer service for status update to be told that they don't know when the items will be shipped. Chased again and ignored. Will be pursuing refund. This is extremely poor service. Avoid this company.

This is an update to my previous review of Maxwells diy in Peterlee, after buying 11 oak pre finished doors and a nightmare 5 months of hell i can report that finally i have received compensation from our credit card company, Maxwells would NOT refund any money but said they wanted to put it right, so 4 attempts later and with there general manager being nothing more than obstructive we involved the credit card company, we were asked to write a statement, send photos and an independant report from a qualified joiner, the independant report was damning in respect of the quality of the doors and the fitting, it has been a journey but we are thankful that the credit card company allowed the claim under the section 75 consumer credit act, so when reading this review BEWARE of using Maxwells Diy for ANY of their doors, YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED, this company has no morals and are only interested in taking your money, they know how to manipulate the system and simply dont care about the customer... BUY FROM SOMEWHERE ELSE AND SAVE YOURSELF THE HEARTACHE

Maxwell's of Birtley had a sale for the purchase of internal doors. i had intended to purchase 8 doors, but fortunately decided to purchase one door to see how the door looked in situ. A door was purchased and fitted by Maxwells. following the fitting, an inspection revealed the following faults.
1. the edge of the door had been planed to make it fit into the door frame,
a. the planing had a large rough patch.
b. a gouge out of the side of door where it had been planed.
c. the planed surface had 'dips' in the surface.
d the original varnish finish on the door had not been replaced.
Additionally, the fitter had dumped all the shavings into the internal house recycle.
I rang Maxwell's, asking to speak to the person responsible for the fitting of the doors and reported my findings.
Maxwell's response was basically tough there is nothing we can do about, this is just how it is, this is our standard of workmanship.
Thankfully, i did not order all the doors from Maxwell's, otherwise there would have been 8 doors to the same standard of poor workmanship. Unbelievable response from Maxwell's which must be indicative of the standard of workmanship they consider acceptable.
