Have used Silvagrow for several years & always been really happy with it, but earlier this year I bought some from my local garden centre & like the reviewer below, the plants - mainly tomato, curcubits & salads were small & spindly & it put my plants way behind where they should be. I checked the date on the bag & it was 2025. I went back to the garden centre & told them that they were selling old compost & I thought it was no good any more. They said they'd had a new delivery but it was still dated 2025, so there's obviously an issue with either over production or places holding old stock, which is bad for Melcourt's reputation.
In Melcourt's favour, they're the only manufacturer I've seen that actually puts a date on the bags, which is important as compost - particularly peat free - does deteriorate over time. And at least the plants didn't die, which happened to the ones I put into a replacement peat free brand!
I will try Silvagrow again next year as it's still probably the best peat free compost I've found, but I'll definitely be checking the production date before buying!
Edit: Melcourt customer support have been really helpful - unfortunately I'd thrown the bag away so they couldn't trace the batch or it's route to the garden centre to try to find the source of the problem.

Bought 4 bags of this at the beginning of the season for our hanging baskets, tomatoes and cucumbers. First impressions were very good, the compost looked and smelled good. However, right from the start we found that the tomatoes and cucumber plants grew spindly and weak. The hanging baskets too have been very disappointing, they simply haven’t put on the strong growth that we have had in the past with a different compost. Overfeeding them has brought some improvements, but there still far from what we have produced in the past. We are reasonably experienced gardeners, so it can’t be us. We put up (usually) a dozen baskets, and have a greenhouse of tomatoes and cues, and have done so here for over 20 years

Spoke to a very nice lady who offered to analyse some of the compost, but ultimately decided not to send a sample…….essentially too much bother, didn’t have suitable container to hand, and it wouldn’t improve our baskets/crops.

I’ve been using Melcourt Pine Mini Chips Bark (60lt) for three years in a row now, and I wouldn't switch to anything else. Although I usually purchase it through Amazon from the seller Suregreen Ltd, my praise is for the exceptional quality Melcourt maintains.

These mini chips are perfect for mulching around my roses and magnolias in my Middlesbrough garden. The bark is consistently clean, well-graded, and provides excellent moisture retention—it's particularly effective for container gardening to prevent soil from drying out.

If you want glass and plastic is your compost and growing media buy this awful product!

Shame that such an apparently reputable supplier can bulk out so called ‘high quality’ products with municipal green waste that is riddled with plastics and all sort of unknown rubbish.

It’s greenwashing and disappointing on all levels - if I could give no stars I would.

I contacted the company about some damp bags of Melcourt Sylvagrow compost I bought from a local supplier. I was concerned that some of the nutrients might have been lost due to the dampness. The company was incredibly thorough in their response which eventually resulted in them testing a sample that they requested. Everything was fine with the results. I have to say that I was delighted with the way the company dealt with my initial email and would highly recommend them and their products.

I had a bad batch of compost, Melcourt explained the issue was with the Garden Centre holding on to old stock (more than 6 months from manufacturing) and storing incorrectly (outside), which enabled me to get full refund from the Garden Centre.

As a gesture, Melcourt sent some gift vouchers.

Having heard how some compost companies just deny there is an issue - and consequently lose their clients business - I was really impressed with how Melcourt handled this,I've since bought more of their compost from a different supplier which is the usual top quality.
