Save your money

The first day on the Rocky Mountaineer (Vancouver to Kamloops Gold Leaf Servicew) as a boring scenery-wise except in the evening outside Kamloops when we saw a lovely lake.
We started the day very early at 6am as we had to board the transfer coach by 7am and board the train by 8am. Tea and coffee served in station.
We didn't get to our Kamloops hotel until 21:30.
We had to sit with the couple across from us for meals. Luckily they were nice because there wasn't any option to have lunch on your own as the space is tight on the dining cabin.

The viewing was restricted from our seats which was disappointing. The food was also disappointing both in quality and portion size. I am a slim woman and felt sorry for the men. We were only given breakfast and lunch and a scone later to sustain us despite the long day and the lateness of our hotel arrival.

The hotel in Kamloops itself was OK for budget-standard but there were no food options - they could have provided some sandwiches and drinks at least on such a late arrival. All we could do is climb the stairs as we had to queue for the lift and get to bed ASAP.

The Rocky Mountaineer company is aware of the risks of long train days but doedn't have any arrangements in place to ensure people are fed properly on longer days. I felt sorry for people who were old or diabetic.

The 2nd day was better scenery-wise as we were going into the Rockys but again we had to get up at 5am and did not get into Banff until after 8pm. This time we were given an evening meal which was reheated lunch food.

Far from luxury.

In hindsight we would have flown from Vancouver to Calgary as our views of the Rockys travelling from Banff to Jasper were far more spectacular.

HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT, DON'T BOOK ROCKY MOUNTAINEER

Freight trains take precedence over passenger trains, we sat on the tracks for hours, both our train days started at 6 am and ended 10 pm hotel check in, way too long w/only breakfast & lunch included (they did serve 5 pm re-heated chicken w/mashed potatoes on first day and fresh baked scones on second day...tells us they were prepared for the long days, so why didn't Rocky Mountaineer advise a prospective traveler of these days? Also drinks are included & unlimited, we had to put up with freeloader drunks, staff did nothing for the other 40 passengers to curtail the bad behaviour of a few. Recommend they sell a drink package as cruise ships do, then we're not subsidizing their drinking habits.

NEVER give Rocky Mountaineer your money

Rocky Mountaineer is the single worst travel company I have ever encountered. When wildfires devastated Jasper, I received an email from Rocky Mountaineer outlining alternative arrangements (with the option to cancel if those revisions didn’t suit our needs). What was completely missing from their communication was any warning that cancelling would mean they would keep every penny I paid - $7,000 - with no refund, no future credit, and no regard for the actual circumstances or the substantial cost of their “premium” service.

We paid for a seamless luxury rail journey, but what Rocky Mountaineer offered as a replacement was a series of inconvenient bus and car transfers at odd times that didn’t align at all with our family’s other plans in the region - and certainly did not deliver the comfort, efficiency, or experience we expected for the price. These alternatives felt like an afterthought rather than a genuine effort to provide value to loyal customers. For our anniversary trip, the revised schedule simply made our other arrangements unworkable so we were left with only the option to cancel. I assumed they would issue us a partial refund and a partial travel credit so we could rebook. I was clear in my email and phone calls that this was our intention.

When I asked for a refund due to these radical changes (and the fact that every hotel and rental car provider in the area had cheerfully issued full refunds and credits), Rocky Mountaineer flatly refused. Again and again, they pointed me to obscure legal language and claimed their hands were tied, ignoring the fact that every other reputable business in the disaster zone managed to “do the right thing” for impacted travelers, and refusing to take responsibility for their email that told us we could cancel because of unforeseen circumstances. After my repeated requests, they wouldn’t even issue a credit for a future trip.

Do not trust Rocky Mountaineer with your money or your milestone moments. Their communications are vague, their policies are rigid to the point of exploitation, and their customer service is, frankly, heartless. If disaster or even minor disruption affects your travel, expect nothing but stonewalling and lost funds, even when their alternatives consist of bus rides rather than the luxury experience you purchased. Other companies in the region acted with integrity and compassion; Rocky Mountaineer showed zero transparency and even less empathy. Book with them only if you’re willing to lose your money and put your dream trip in the hands of a company that will refuse to make things right, no matter what.

They forgot us

On the morning of Sept. 11th, 2025, the first day of the train ride, we were at the hotel lobby at 6:55 for a 7:00 pick-up time. Hotel reception (the hotel RM booked us into) said he thought they had already left and guessed that they would probably be sending another shuttle. He didn’t seem concerned about this and didn’t offer to look into it, so we assumed this was how they managed pick-ups. We waited until 7:15 - we called the 1-800 help number in our welcome package and got voicemail - we left a message. At 7:19 they indicated “I just want to confirm with you that the motor coach is still on its way to pick you up. they should be there shortly - probably just before 7:30. Rest assured the motor coach is on its way to pick you up right now”. By 7:44 - nothing! Train departure was 8:00. I approached hotel reception who advised to talk to the U-Haul driver loading luggage - he worked for RM - he was loading a lot of suitcases so we realized there were a lot of people at our hotel who were taking this train. He said he would call someone. I got a call at 7:49 - she was panicked and asked if we were at the hotel - I said yes, we’ve been waiting for almost an hour - she said the train was leaving in 12 minutes! She said they were sending someone over right away to pick us up. It took another 10+ minutes for that van to arrive. One of the employees at the entrance to the train station said to the driver “hurry, they are holding the train for you”. Train passengers were watching us as we got out of the van. None of the RM staff seemed to put the pieces together that they had forgotten us - just that we were late and everyone on board was waiting for our arrival. No apologies - no explanation to either ourselves or the other passengers. When we got on the train, everyone was looking at us as we got on, as our seats were at the back of the train. My husband heard one couple say, as we went by them “those are the ones we were waiting for”. It was very embarrassing having everyone thinking we held them up because we were running late, but also extremely stressful thinking we were going to miss the train and our trip altogether. It took a while to shake this negative experience off. Outside of this stressful experience, the staff onboard were fantastic, all other transfers were smooth and efficient, and the rest of the trip was absolutely amazing. Our travel agent forwarded our feedback to the RM when we returned and their response was to apologize for the stressful and disappointing start to our journey. They indicated it was a mistake made by “one of our team members in Banff, which led to us being left behind”. They were going to address it directly with the team member involved for accountability and future incidents. They also apologized for the lack of acknowledgment and apology during their travel. They offered a goodwill gesture of $100 each. Our response back was, that although we appreciated the apology, we felt that an offer of $100 each on a trip we spent almost $7800 on was just not commensurate with the experience we had. We indicated we were very disappointed to see that RM viewed this as a mistake by one of the team members in Banff, when indeed it was a series of errors made by a number of different participants in their chain of service. Firstly with reception staff at the hotel RM booked us into - they should be knowledgeable enough about RM processes and had the foresight to contact someone, especially as they saw us waiting for almost an hour. Or, they could have just left their response as “the bus already left” - then we could have moved forward with getting help. Secondly, regarding the voicemail we received after we called the help number - they called back to state someone would be there by 7:30. If they had actually looked into our situation and confirmed that someone had forgotten to pick us up and directed a bus to get us, there is no reason that it shouldn’t have shown up. I suspect it was a routine response meant to placate us, and wasn’t based on any confirmation on their part with the transport staff. Unfortunately, despite our interventions to find a solution to the problem, the only thing that actually moved things into action was the U-Haul driver, and by that time things were looking pretty dire for us as it was only 15 minutes until train departure. Thirdly, staff on our train car should have noticed that two assigned seats were empty. No one from RM was proactively looking for us. It was only through our efforts, and not RM, that we made it onto that train, so it was insulting to receive their response of “despite the delay in your transfer, the train departed only three minutes later than scheduled and we’re grateful that you didn’t miss any part of your journey..” They again indicated they would offer $100 each since they felt the onboard experience was satisfactory.

Great Experience

--Our trip involved: day 1, Vancouver to Kamloops (overnight stay); day 2, Kamloops to Banff.
--It was a brilliant experience. Much of the scenery was just stunning. Great views of rivers, gorges, lakes and mountains. The staff in our coach (Chris, Chloe and Emma) were excellent: friendly and very well informed about the line and the various points of interest. The food was delicious and there was plenty to drink - Baileys+Coffee a particular pleasure! The transfers to/from our hotels were very well organised - including our bags arriving at our hotels before us!
--Bad points? I was surprised to see a number of bad reviews. Yes, the days were long (depart hotel at 6am and arrive at new hotel at 7pm) but that was the nature of the beast. The carriage was on occasion a little chilly to start with - over eager air-conditioning.
--In conclusion we found it a brilliant experience with unforgettable views and charming staff.

STAFF’s GROSS PIERCINGS MADE ME FEEL SICK

I’m not a snob but young staff with a plethora of tattoos and face piercings so outlandish I have only seen David Attenborough show similar in the African tribes - REALLY gave me the “ick” feeling when they were serving food and drink.

I understand celebrating individuality but not to the detriment of customer experience especially at this price point

Rocky Mountaineer is not Trustworthy

We booked a 10 night trip from Vancouver to Calgary with stops in Kamloops, Jasper, Lake Louise and Banff directly with Rocky Mountaineer. Overall, the two days on the train from Vancouver to Jasper award just OK. The accommodations in Kamloops were very basic even though we purchase the gold package.

The big problem is the Rocky Mountaineer company themselves. I would never book again directly with them and would use another company who actually provide the services. The Rocky Mountaineer Company just contracts with other tour companies and does not provide anywhere near the level of service that they promise. We had problems at every hotel And there was no one from Rocky Mountain near to help. The bus transportation was supposed to be a small bus, but it turned out to be a large bus with multiple other tours mixed in, which was not what we were told. There were many other significant problems and all Rocky Mountaineer was willing to do is refund 3% of the price When 50% would be more appropriate.

DON’t do business with this company.

NOT WORTH the MONEY

We saw a lot of Canada. But the price we paid was much more than what it was worth.
Fly to Calgary and take transportation to Banff. Stay in Banff and take day trips to where you want to go. The train trip was long and you will get up very early to meet their schedule. Hotel in Kamloops was bad, there are good alternatives that they could have chosen. You stay in Lake Louise at the Fairmont but the meals are outrageously priced and there are no alternatives. Bus drivers are your guides for last part. Not good compared to professional guides. You can go on a 2 week Viking river cruise for the money and spend less. Definitely not worth the money and they don't really care. I tried to communicate with their Customer Service and they are tone deaf.

The longest day!

The delays at the end of the days spoilt the experience for us, day one delayed arriving 2 hours late, day 2 delayed 6 hours due to rail and traffic problems. Arriving at past 1.00 am in the morning, we were celebrating our golden wedding anniversary it spoilt the whole experience for us, the next day we felt exhausted. The scenery and wildlife were brilliant and the staff Michelle and Shamus were amazing, they kept their great service up althrough the long delays.

I had an awesome experience on the Rocky Mountaineer in Canada

I had an awesome experience on the gold leaf service from Banff to Vancouver over two days. The food was wonderful and being a vegan was so well catered for. Brilliant scenery. The staff, Kirk, Victor, Licia and Pete went the extra mile. Comfortable seats and the trip was so well organised. I recommend this trip and the gold service.

The service on the train was top notch

The service on the train was top notch. Our hosts (especially Barry) were exceptional. The food and the seats were great (Gold Leaf). We were not prepared for the very long days. Pick up at 6 and arrive at hotel at 7. The hotels were unpredictable. The Fairmount was lovely but the rest were not in line with the price paid for the vacation. Once you were off the train, RM was no help with the land portion even though it was all booked through them. We saw some incredible views, laughed with friends and it was overall a nice trip, but not the experience we were told to expect.

Worst two days of our 30-day holiday.

Recently returned from a 30-day trip. The most expensive part (by far), was the gold-leaf Rocky Mountaineer, Vancouver to Banff and sadly became the least enjoyable two days of our trip.

Chaos at the hotel where we met, along with 100 other passengers. One staff member registering us onto coaches. We had done as we were asked, leaving our luggage clearly labelled in our hotel room, only to find it was not collected and did not make it to our hotel in Kamloops until after we had retired to bed.

Day 2 was 16 hours on the train. How many people would sign up for a luxury trip costing a lot of money if it was clearly stated that the train must wait for all freight trains on the line (highlighting the risk of long delays and making it clear about the early start on day 2 - 6am pick-up). Communication regarding the delay was poor. Staff were vague and kept joking about the time of arrival and the fact we were missing the best views of the Rockies due to darkness.

Day 2 felt like a long-haul flight. We eventually arrived at our hotel at 11.40pm, after getting up to collect our lost luggage at 5am.

Would definately NOT recommend

Wonderful trip

We had a wonderful trip from Banff to Vancouver on the Rocky Mountaineer. The staff was incredibly efficient, gracious, and helpful. Their efforts went well beyond the definition of customer service and satisfaction. The food was superb. Logistics were excellent. Yes, there are pullovers onto side tracks--one cannot expect two tracks to go through some of those tight mountain passes. Chill out complainers--it's a vacation.

Excellent Journey through the Clouds

We've recently completed the Journey through the Clouds, which was the Jasper to Vancouver via Kamloops journey. We chose the Silver Leaf service and thoroughly enjoyed our 2 days of travel with this company.
Kaila, Dan and Lalita were excellent hosts and we were treated like royalty - they were friendly, professional and nothing was too much trouble for them.
The scenery was spectacular and the commentary was humorous and informative.
The seating was very comfortable and the visibility was excellent. The food and drink was plentiful, always delicious and well presented. Thank you, it was excellent 👍🏻

The Upside and Downside

The Upside: The train itself was nice - good food, friendly staff. SOME of the scenery is stunning. The Downside: Leaving Vancouver, you are going through industrial land and then farmland for about 2-3 hours - very unimpressive. Coming into Kamloops, we had to wait on the train for regular train traffic to clear and therefore sat on a siding for about 90
minutes. The Sandman Hotel in Kamloops is a two star at best with terrible coffee. We got to the hotel about 9 pm because of the waiting for other train traffic, and had to have our suitcases ready to go at 6am. Very taxing. On the train, you are discouraged from moving about. It was difficult to sit hour after hour after hour. We disembarked in Banff. We were happy to have not booked the return trip. This is an expensive trip that truly doesn’t offer value for the price. We would not do it again.

Never again awful waste of time and money.

We spent a fortune on what we thought was part of a holiday of a life time. So disappointed what a waste of time and money.
We were silver leaf. Seats were basic not very comfortable and looked like they could do with a good refurbishment.
We had a partial view as window frame restricted it.
Long long days due to delays letting fright trains past. My husband counted 126 carriages on one freight train. No warning about any of these things.
Food was ok in no way spectacular just very ordinary.
Worst part was long long days from 6am each morning to 7pm one day then 10pm the next.
The cost was outrageous for what we got for our money.
At least Duck Turpin had the decency to wear a mask. Would never go again and my advice to others is don’t waste your money.
