Instructor Jig is very grumpy
Instructor Jig is very grumpy. While he and Senora love to show off he "teaches" by intimidation. La rumba studio has loud fans, he doesn't speak loud enough (get a mike!) and then yells at you for not following his instructions. We couldn't hear you, jerk! He will show you a new move once, maybe twice and then expect you to get it perfectly because he has already moved on to the next move which unfortunately requires you to have mastered the previous move which almost nobody new had learned. It quickly leads to frustration as he actually never teaches, just demonstrates it once or twice. But oblivious to many students stumbling, he ignores them and blazes on introducing even more complicated steps. After 4 weeks of Salsa 1, many people somehow get the basics. Once you learn the "cross body lead" (not that hard), he says you are ready for Salsa 2. Oh my. It was like having mastered multiplication tables to suddenly having to understand quantum physics. Salsa 1 taught a 4 move sequence. The logical way to teach Salsa 2 is to add one or two new elements, practice from the top 1 through 4 and add 5 and 6. Then repeat 1-6 a few times until everyone gets it. Then add 7 and 8, Repeat 1-8, etc. At 1st Salsa 2 class he literally threw out 9 new moves, demonstrated them twice and then proceeded to expect all of us to know 1-13! Impossible! 3 people walked out in frustration mid class. Actually dangerous to expect us to dance with a partner when we haven't a clue what we are supposed to be doing. Someone can get hurt. When you try your first class, you may pick up on his egotistical, impatient and grumpy attitude. Listen to your instincts! Don't think it will get better next class. It won't. Find another locale and an instructor who can actually teach not just show off.
