Tax Preparer Misconduct
Mr. Remis altered our return and filed it without our knowledge, review or approval. His mistakes on that altered return resulted in an overstatement of nearly $5000 in amounts owed to the IRS and the state. We only discovered his misconduct when we received a notice of tax due from the IRS. He initially refused to amend the return, until we provided him with detailed information from our source documents showing the actual amounts that should have been included. After completing the amended return, he failed to submit it to either the IRS or the state, as we confirmed weeks later when we received yet another notice of tax due. Communication with him during this process was difficult; we often waited days or weeks for a response. In one of my final emails where I requested confirmation of submission of the amended returns he simply replied “your request is denied.”
