Opening Doors to Future Goals

I was a first time intern and first time associate for the ThinkNeuro Summer 2025 cohort with 0 incoming research experience. I had no clue what I was jumping into as I was not familiar with any research skills, but had the passion to create a change in my community.
ThinkNeuro's SRI gave me the tools to navigate in the field of research such as conducting literature reviews, analyzing data, presenting my finds, and becoming familiar programming with R. Furthermore, the SRI gave me the opportunity for leadership skills by critically thinking, delegating, and communicating with my Healthcare Access and Disparities group. (My group was amazing and truly couldn't have done anything without them! I wish them all the luck in their future endeavors!!)
I truly believe that this internship opened the door of opportunities for me because not only was I able to receive a spot in the SSEAMS internship for Health Equity that focuses on an independent study for the Fall semester, but I was given the chance to work for the Office of Undergraduate Research and got a paid position as an RA in a lab at my university. This is my first ever RA position in a lab and believe the internship has prepared me to work critically in the field of research.

Good Fit for Aspiring Researchers

This was a great opportunity to dive into the world of academic research analysis. As a research associate, I really enjoyed being able to explore research trends at my own pace, leading a group of motivated and friendly interns, and receiving guidance when needed. The team was supportive, and the work felt meaningful, especially since bibliometrics plays a big role in understanding scientific progress. If you like data, literature reviews, and uncovering patterns in research, this internship is a great fit. It's also very beginner-friendly!

The skills I gained are transferable to many fields, and the project was engaging enough that I’d consider doing it again, especially if I had the chance to explore a new research question. I conducted a full literature review and bibliometric analysis on the use of Sigma-1 receptor agonists in combating glutamate toxicity, a topic I'm very passionate about since it relates to pharmaceuticals and chemical engineering while tying in principles of biochemistry. While my team was behavioral neuropharmacology, we had a lot of leeway in choosing a topic that we were all excited about!

When it comes to skills gained, I learned to use tools like R, Web of Science, and Bibliometrix to process and present research trends. I also improved in assessing the impact and connections between academic papers, practiced summarizing complex research trends for presentations, and gained experience working on a long-term research project.

This internship is ideal for self-motivated students. It’s not a program where everything is strictly required and deadlines are enforced, so you get out what you put in... but if you take initiative, it’s a fantastic learning experience. Would recommend to anyone looking to strengthen their research and analytical skills!

I was an intern this past summer (2025) and really enjoyed engaging with my team to complete our research. Our team leads were very helpful with any questions, and learning the R coding aspect will definitely be useful in the future as well!

During my Think Neuro internship

During my Think Neuro internship, I researched neuroimaging techniques and analysis, learning how tools like fMRI and EEG help us understand the brain. I really enjoyed the balance of independence and support, as the program challenged me while still making complex topics accessible. I gained skills in scientific writing, data interpretation, and time management. I would definitely do it again and recommend it to anyone interested in neuroscience or health sciences.

Great structure and exposure to research!

The program is structured really well. I had never been an associate leading an entire research group before, so I was nervous but tasks were manageable and support/guidance was always available. I really appreciate the chance to learn new skills like R programming or have opportunities to apply developing ones like Excel. The only note I would add is that I feel that the R programming academy should go more in depth about coding basics like what certain commands mean or do. It’s promoted to be for beginners, which is true, but it should be more than copying the lines of codes to produce the expected results.

ThinkNeuro Experience

ThinkNeuro was an excellent introduction to conducting professional research in the STEM field. The weekly messages and updates sent were extremely clear, and officers were always happy to help whenever extra clarification or assistance are needed in any topic, whether that's writing an abstract, exploring R programming, or creating the research poster.

Exactly the experience I needed

ThinkNeuro gave me internship and research experience in the field of medical education without having to sacrifice other commitments or extracurricular. The associates and leaders in charge were clear with communication and had several videos prepared that led students through the course step by step. I would like to participate in this internship again. Specifically, my topic was how successful the use of gamma radiation affect tau and amyloid protein to fight Alzheimer's. Through this internship I gained a lot of first hand experience on what it's like to work on a research team. I was also able to study more rigorous and detailed subjects through this internship. I think that it would be beneficial to keep track of individual progress and dismiss those that are not contributing to the project.

ThinkNeuro has overall been an eye opening experience. This program has allowed me to take on more opportunities than I had expected. Not only, just learning different tools and skill sets in research, but also, learning how to lead and push myself as a leader. I would highly recommend this organization as there is a wide range of opportunities waiting for you with them and are happy to help you thrive as a future researcher!

ThinkNeuro Internship Experience

I was a Spring and Summer intern for both the bibliometrics and the DHS program and it was one of the most rewarding experiences I had ever had. The bibliometrix internship was easy to follow through the R Programming and you get to actually research your interest with the different subtopics they offer. The DHS program was also a amazing time as I was a associate taking caring of everyone and knowing that the work you put into making the classwork and teaching the kids will be rewarding. This is honestly a perfect internship for first timers (like a highschooler) as well!

Review

I am currently a summer intern researching about Neurodegenerative Diseases. I enjoyed this experience because it allowed me to gain research skills and collaborate with other individuals. The tasks that we were given were simple and easy to manage as someone who has never conducted research before. Also, my associates were very helpful in guiding our research process and checking up on everyone. I would love to continue this research internship in the fall.

Very Rewarding Experience!

As a Summer Research Intern, I found this experience to be well structured and highly rewarding. The R programming tasks were thoughtfully designed, providing me with hands-on experience in data analysis and coding. After completing the R training, I was assigned to my first choice in research topics, the Healthcare Access and Disparities group. I really appreciated the support from my team members and team associate, who provided constructive feedback throughout the internship.

Overall, this experience really improved my technical skills in R programming and data analysis, and I'm grateful to have been chosen to contribute to meaningful work. I would definitely work with ThinkNeuro again in the future and I highly recommend this internship to anyone interested in gaining or improving their research experience!

As a Summer 2025 ThinkNeuro Intern...

As a Summer 2025 ThinkNeuro intern, I think this internship was a great introductory program into research and bibliometrics. I've previously found it difficult to find research opportunities so I appreciated how accessible ThinkNeuro was. I didn't expect to be doing in-depth research since the program advertises being an introduction to research and I think it did just that! I now feel as though I've built a strong foundation for future research projects especially now that I've become familiar with R programming. For my first research experience, I loved that the program offered a wide range of broad research topics and was therefore able to analyze subjects I'm most passionate about, specifically revolving around healthcare access and disparities.

Kashviya Somangali - My Experience As a ThinkNeuro Intern

I thoroughly enjoyed the ThinkNeuro internship experience since even though I was a first time intern and even though the program was fully online, there was significant guidance to ensure everyone could succeed— finish the R programming workshop, catch deadlines, and complete group posters. I definitely learnt a lot from this program and would recommend it if you want to learn a new computer language, want to understand how to analyze data, and if you love neuroscience and other sciences!
