A mediocre experience

We have used other tour operators in the past for Europe and found TripOppo to be satisfactory. As an example, we had several elderly people in our recent tour in Sicily, and they were required to drag their own luggage through coble stone streets about 200m in some locations from the hotels as the bus could park in front of the hotel. There were no hotel staff available to assist them, and other travelers stepped up to assist. I am not aware of other tour operators that do this.

The Booking Process Sucks

My trip will depart on May 26th, 2025 so I don't know about the experience yet, and this review IS ONLY ABOUT the Booking Process. I really really HATE IT!

With Gate1 Travel, I go online, select a tour, select a date, input number of travellers, choose type of beds, choose type of air fare, then submit. System would return a list of available choices of flights and whether any of them has additional cost. Since I already built my profile with them, they no longer need any additional information. Then comes the payment screen. I pay a deposit and full payment is due 90 days before the departure date. As soon as I pay the deposit, I have access to the air ticket and am able to select seats, meals etc...

With Tripoppo, I had to do the following:

1/ I saw an ad on Travelzoo, so I chose the tour and date. The price displayed, I chose the price and submit. This step is only "requesting for booking".
2/ I then received an email with instructions how to pay a "non-refundable" deposit. I paid the deposit.
3/ Then I got a call from the agen telling me that the airfare for the reservation I submitted "does not" include checked bag and seat selection. If I want checked bag there would be $100-$200 more per person. I could not believe a travel agency would give its customers an airfare to travel to another country for more than 1 week "without at least 1 checked bag"! I was not too happy already but had to accept the fact that I had to pay more. The agent also offered tickets on other airlines but the price would change.
4/ Then I received another call from the agent saying that I need to sign a document that states once the air tickets are purchased, I am totally responsible for paying for the ticket. I signed the purchase agreement and provided my credit card information.
5/ Then I received another call from the agent asking me to check my credit card account and let him know "exactly" how much the airlines charged my CC account so that he can adjust the total invoice. I later found out that because Tripoppo purchased the air tickets in Canadian dollars so they must know the exact amount in USD.
6/ Then I got another call from the agent saying that he noticed I "chose not to upgrade" the hotel rooms and he recommends to upgrade. Anyway I chose to upgrade so he adjusted the total invoice amount.
7/ Then I received the final invoice with full payment due on ................. But I notice there was a disclosure that until the invoice is paid in full, they have the right to adjust the price up to 7%. WHAT???? I paid the full amount soon afterward to avoid this potential increase.
8/ I received an email invite me to attend a Zoom meeting to go over the do's and don'ts etc... The meeting was very informative.
9/ Then on May 6th, I received another call from the agent saying that he noticed I had selected the "hotel transfer", which is included in the price, on the day I leave Japan. And if I want a "private transfer" he can schedule that for $350 USD. I asked him why it was not disclosed upfront and he said the information was provided. So if the information was provided and I chose not to take the "private transfer", then what is the reason for the call. Up sale?

I forgot to mention that somewhere along the line I had to provide a copy of my passport by email. This process is not secured at all. Anyone can intercept the email and obtain personal information.

With this kind of booking process, I DOUBT that I will ever book another trip with Tripoppo. I like to have all information upfront, I make my choice, and that is it!

I would just like to add to HK's review…

I would just like to add to HK's review as we were on the same trip and I agree wholeheartedly with everything she has said.
I would also like to add that a whole day was wasted going from South Korea and Japan. We were told we could have a later start to the day we were flying to Osaka and it would be an 11 o'clock start, we got to the airport before 12. When we had to wait until 4.30 for our flight. It was a long wait, we now know there was a flight a 9.30am and 11am that day. Had we been able to get the 11am flight, we would have had a lot of spare time in Osaka and for those doing the optional trip to Kyoto the next day, that would have been better spent in Osaka than an airport waiting room.

The tour leader in Japan didn't have great organisation skills. Several times she left people behind who were at the meeting points at the designated times. We had to call her to come and back to get us. We have photographic evidence that we were at the meeting point exactly on time. This held the rest of the group up and we were highly embarrassed and it wasn't our fault.

She called us by numbers rather than names, which I considered exceptionally rude.
I did the optional tour to Kyoto as I particularly wanted to see the Vermilion Torii gates, after going to the tea ceremony and the bamboo grove, we were told we only had 30 minutes to see the Torii gates. There is no way you can see all the gates in that time. She was worried the bus driver would run over his time. We arrived back at the hotel 30 minutes early.

Check the pricing of the optional tours with other local tours. We paid much more for Trippoppo Tours than the local advertised ones. Some other guests did the local tours and reported back that they got the same tour as our paid tours and have no regrets going on the local tours.
The kimono experience wasn't even with kimonos. We were given Yakatas, no hair done, no makeup, no shoes, no fans. We all made it a fun time together but paying $US 55, you would expect to get kimonos, as the works is advertised locally for $US 41.40 or 6000 yen. There was no transport needed to the venue as we were already there.

If you are having bigger numbers in the groups, the group should be provided with communication machines so you can hear what the local guide is saying. In both countries we were told the company thought they were too expensive for the groups, so hearing especially the softly spoken South Korean guide speak was extremely difficult, in fact impossible at times. The Japanese guide couldn't pronounce some words in English as this is her 3rd language, so understanding her at times was unbelievably difficult.

We are pleased we decided to stay on in Tokyo for a further few days as we would never have seen Tokyo properly in a day.

Saying all this, we had a fabulous time as all the other guests were great people and we throughly enjoyed their company. We visited many interesting places and experienced many Korean and Japanese cultural adventures and food.

Would I recommend Trippoppo to anyone else? I would have to say, I think you could do much better with another company and no we wouldn't recommend them. Too many temples and not enough time at interesting places, particularly the Toyota Museum which was extremely interesting. The shrine/street market area in Tokyo if you were doing the kimonos, the list goes on.
Very long days with 7.30 starts and not getting to the hotels until well after dark, one night was 8pm.

Loved S Korea and Japan

With 3 friends we went on the S Korea and Japan trip. Had an amazing time. There were 19 in total in S Korea and we all got along. Very manageable for our guide Minni who was terrific. Could have done without the hard sell at the Cosmetics place. Waste of time. Would have liked to tour the new Starfield library instead.
Japan was glorious and our guide Kelly was knowledgeable and funny. Perhaps fewer shrines and temple visits although I understand that it a large part of the culture. Overall I rate this trip 4.5/5 and we'll definitely take another Tripoppo vacation

I was this year on this trip to Peru

I was this year on this trip to Peru. Everything was organized very well. The only thing I did not like that on the day of our trip to Machu Picchu we did not stay overnight at the same hotel from which we departed to Machu Picchu, but instead we had to drive an additional 3 hours to Cusco. Altogether, we spend 8 hours on the road this day. It was very tiring.
In addition, be aware that only after you pay nonrefundable deposit, TripOppo adds an additional charges for Gratitude ($112 per person) and for luggage. I believe they were supposed to notify you regarding Gratitude charges before you paid your deposit.

Tour is wonderful

Tour is wonderful, I gave 4 stars because the food at Beijing is awful, breakfast is great at the hotel (Beijing hotel), but the location of the hotel is too far from city. also most of us dislike to visit the Chinese herbal medicine at Beijing as we are travel to enjoy but not see doctor, in addition they are pushing you to purchase their medicine we feel like being rope. We find that Liza is the best tour guide at Xi'an. We hope that TripOppo offer more China tour with difference province so that we will join them again

Splendors of Brazil, Argentina and Peru. We are a week away from our 21 day tour…

We are a week away from our 21 day tour to Peru, Argentina, Buenos Aires, Lima, Amazon Jungle, Cusco and Lake Titicaca. We are super excited for this 3 week experience. Max has been there every step of the way helping us plan, always responding immediately to our many, many questions about baggage, flights, tours, hotels, etc. We could not be happier with our planning experience with Max!

S Korea and Japan.

Just returned from a tour of South Korea and Japan. We were so lucky to be there during the peak of Cherry blossoms! I was a bit concerned about the language barrier, but I had no reason to worry. The guides spoke English and were helpful and gave us guidance for our free time. Hotels were very good and meals were fine. For me the highlight was Peace Park where we had spectacular views of Mount Fuji, cherry blossoms and a shrine. That’s not to take away from other stops on the tour. All were interesting and exposed us to Korean and Japanese culture. Overall an interesting tour with a good balance of cultural, scenic and free time events.

Fantastic Thailand Tour

We recently toured Thailand with a long stay extension in Phuket. This was a fantastic tour! Once again, Tripoppo provided a memorable experience at a reasonable cost. This was our 5th trip with Tripoppo and Tripoppo continues to be our travel company of choice.

Price is good but quality is poor

I just returned from the TripOppo tour “15 Days Japan & South Korea” March 20 – April 3, 2025. It certainly is good value for the money and you get to see all the major sights in a short period of time. Hotels (all but one) are lovely and comfortable. The buffet breakfasts were great. Meals included on the tour were great and gave super opportunities to sample food from each culture.
But there are limitations that made this trip much less enjoyable.
The promotion said “small to medium group”. Our group initially had 31 people and 5 more joined us in Japan. I can’t imagine how much bigger a “large” group would be. This number is unwieldy for the guide who was trying to lead us in mostly very crowded venues. Even crossing the street with traffic lights proved challenging to get us all to the other side before the light changed. Just walking down the crowded streets, it was difficult to keep our group together and follow our guide. Luckily, we had a very friendly and mutually supportive group – all 36 of us – and we looked out for each other, especially if someone was falling behind.
The Japanese guide walked especially fast and, despite carrying a stick with stuffed animal on top, it was difficult to keep up and to see where she had gone. For me, if someone taller cut in front of me (which happened often) I couldn’t see her stuffed animal. I’m a pretty fast walker but it was difficult to keep up. Others in the group were less ambulatory and more challenged to keep the pace. Our guide talked about how hard it was on her, at age 60, to manage our group. Many in our group were from mid-sixties to mid-seventies and following was difficult. She showed her frustration but we were at least equally frustrated.
The Japanese guide often said that time was limited and if you stopped to take pictures you’d fall behind. But, for me and several others, taking pictures was what it was all about. And many of us wanted to take photos of things other than what the guide pointed out.
A good example of this was in the Bamboo Forest. We struggled through large crowds to get to a point where our guide said people took the pictures that appear on Instagram. I, for one, didn’t want the pictures everyone else took; I hoped for my own unique photos. Then we were to turn around and fight the crowds going back. A few of us asked if the trail was a loop and couldn’t we finish the loop. The guide warned that there were lots of steps and not much to see on the rest of the trail, and if we chose to follow the loop we might be late getting back. In fact, those of us who took the loop found it less crowded, more interesting and with opportunities to take photos along the river. The steps were low level and very manageable. We returned to the meeting place in advance of the guide and the rest of the group.
Not only was the pace rapid but both guides had limitations to their use of English and many of us did not understand what was being said. Our Korean guide had a mic and small speaker for visits to sites; the Japanese guide used only her voice. In both cases it was difficult to hear the information they shared about the sites and instructions about where and when to meet, especially with large crowds and other noise around us. Our Japanese guide spoke somewhat more clearly in English but we questioned her comprehension as she had difficulty understanding and answering questions. It appeared she had limited knowledge about the different sites visited. (Ironically, when we joined the TripOppo Zoom orientation meeting prior to the tour, we found the speaker difficult to understand and unable to answer some of our questions).
Many of the eating places required cash only although we had been advised that credit cards and a small amount of cash would be sufficient. If you go, be prepared to either change money or withdraw cash from an ATM (not always convenient when in some markets).
The final disappointment was the (optional) Teppanyaki dinner at the end of the tour. Unlike other Teppanyakis, there were no flourishing knives or banter by the chef. We just got to watch him cook and serve us – and there wasn’t even enough room for all of us to watch. Some had to sit at another table and get up to see the process. This was very disappointing, not to mention very expensive. The food itself was excellent, but it was questionable whether it was worth the money.
Recommendations: •Smaller group. The size of the group was unmanageable for both the guide and the participants. A lot of time was spent just collecting all members of the group – time which could have been spent viewing the site.
• Most people want photos of their tour; this needs to be a consideration when walking around sites.
• Guides use speaker system where guide has mic and participants have a receiver and headphones so everyone can hear.
- Fewer sites, more time at each site

Mystery of Egypt

Mystery of Egypt, the Nile Cruise and Red Sea, (14 days),
A shout-out to Candie from Tripoppo Operation Team. She kept us well-informed, made suggestions when asked, took care of issues to more than our satisfaction and has a great sense of humour!
The trip itself, was very well organized. The guide (Ali) was more than exceptional and knowledgeable. He made the trip over the top enjoyable, looking after points of interests, commentary, safety, added extras (unique shopping) and side-trips such as visiting the new museum (GEM) before its official opening.
Tripoppo’s logistics when meeting at the airport, hotels, drivers etc had NO glitches.
For future reference make people aware of some very early mornings, and restrictions for some of the sites…(Valley of the Kings) super steep climb. We had no problems but others may.
Thank-you,
Faith & Al
