Beware of AJ Windows and Door Solutions in Shoemakersville PA
I signed a contract with AJ Window and Door Solutions of Shoemakersville PA for a roof replacement that also included replacing an exterior door that would not close, was in violation, and was urgent, replacing a decaying railing, and adding proper attic ventilation with gave vents. Many weeks after the contract was signed some of the job was started (the roof but not the underlayment wood replacement, poor job clean up, chimney flashing not replaced, nor roof ventilation added, no door or railing). AJ Windows and Doors owner Tom Ott then attempted to change important payment terms and demanded substantially more money upfront for the rest of the job after the agreement was long ago already signed — at a point when the job should have already been completed. I was under the gun with time at that point and was trapped.
After wasting much time and my tenants being very upset that the door was still not replaced, I ultimately had to hire others to complete parts of the project rather than agree to threatened contract changes.
Homeowners in Pennsylvania should know that under the Pennsylvania Home Improvement Consumer Protection Act (HICPA), contracts are supposed to include estimated start and completion dates. If a contractor refuses to include them or continually delays while demanding additional upfront money, consumers should document everything carefully and consider filing a complaint with the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office. It allows for triple damages and attorneys fees.
I strongly recommend that anyone considering this company carefully review all contract terms, payment schedules, ventilation specifications, and timelines before signing. Make sure every promised item is written clearly into the contract and avoid paying large amounts upfront before materials and work are actually underway.
In my experience, I had to closely monitor the workmanship and contract details rather than assuming the contract would be honored. I asked for photos of all flashing and things I could not access with a ladder. This helped me see the 30 year old leaking chimney flashing was not replaced per contract. Instead it was hidden under some aluminum wrap and a lot of caulk. They went out and did it correctly, hopefully, after being exposed.
It was a very disruptive and upsetting experience and I am left with shingles nailed to the air in the attic where missing wood was not addressed as contracted.
Tom Ott of AJ Windows and Doors of Shoemakersville Pennsylvania has had enough of bad reviews I suppose (see Google) and while I could not get him to engage in doing the work after paying him, he sent me several ranting threats including in the middle of the night about reviews. He calls it slander. But it is the truth. If only he put that much effort into doing what he has the money to do rather than trying to threaten people.
