At Opal Auctions, we maintain a clear policy: Rough opal may be returned for a full refund as long as it remains in its original, untouched condition. As you mentioned, you proceeded to cut the stone. Cutting rough opal is an unpredictable process and a known risk in the lapidary arts; for this reason, we cannot offer refunds once a stone has been altered or worked. We always encourage our customers to inspect their rough under light and water upon arrival, if you aren't satisfied with what you see in the rough state, we are always happy to take it back.

While we respect various gemological opinions, our auditors often categorize dark brown Ethiopian material differently than true Black Opal to prevent buyer disappointment. When a seller repeatedly disputes these standards or bypasses our quality control protocols, we must take action to protect the marketplace’s reputation.
