We have been using rfSolutions since their inception. Their range of equipment and wireless knowledge, plus support has always been exceptional. There have been government changes in the wireless spectrum and security a few times which affect everyone. The systems are extremely adaptable and this can cause issues with linking components if buyers have no previous experience. I would suggest people who encounter issues using rfSolutions to contact someone in their network of experienced installers.
A responsive set of emails from John in customer support provided me with some guidance; I bought the gamma62T modules from CPC Farnell and they were easy to set up via the button-push menu system. Interfacing to an ESP32 needed a little bit (an hour or two) of experimenting and highlighted a typo in their datasheet (which they have already corrected): if you want serial data you need to set the module to TRx mode rather than pure Rx only.
I am yet to test these modules at any kid of range seeing as I am still developing my solution's code, but given their path loss capability in the various LoRa modes (let alone simple FSK) I expect no problems.
I bought a set of three items to remotely control a heating system in a property. A Hub, a Switch and a Sensor. The hub to link the devices to the Internet, the switch to turn on and off the power to a heating system and the sensor to prove the heating system was running.
The hub, once set up using written instructions that are poor, failed to display the status of the switch so it was returned and a new hub was supplied which did display the status.
Then I wanted to prove the switch worked. The sensor provides its data through a different app, the Riot Sense app. This app did not have the essential tab to configure the hub to return data so it could never be set up to work. After probably 10 hours of frustration, reloading at least eight times, rebooting phone, several calls to RF Support, emails back and forth it was admitted by RF that the app was out of date, a Beta version of a revision was sent but while this enabled a couple of steps forward it still failed to provide the essential connection to the Hub required for transmission of data. Many emails and several calls have resulted in no progress, RF Solutions are unable to suggest a reason this app will not function or a remedy.
I have six Gamma modules, and two Zeta modules, they are OK, but the documentation is limited, and has errors.
However, it is when things go wrong that you find out how good a company is.
I purchased 2 Gamma modules in mid-February 2023, on-line, as a private customer. One module I used straightaway, the other I kept, unopened as a spare.
When I came to use the spare module in July, I opened the sealed bag, and two items came out, the Gamma board, and the main chip. I informed RF Solutions of this, with photographs, and was advised that a replacement would be sent.
After a few days, I enquired as to when I was going to get the replacement, as was told in no uncertain terms, I was not going to get one, as it was not permitted under their terms and conditions, with the accompanying statement that it could not have left the factory like that, with the inference that it must be my fault that the chip had come off the board. They did offer, as a ‘goodwill’ gesture a discount on my next order of ten, knowing full well that I had never ordered more than two at a time.
A lot of correspondence was exchanged, including my pointing out that it was well within the limits of the Consumer Protection Act, and all I ever got back was “it cannot have left the factory like that”, and they weren’t going to replace because of their terms and conditions.
At one point, RF Solutions suggested I could send the parts back to them for inspection, which I did. After four weeks I had heard nothing, and when I chased them, I was told the same as above, with no indication as to how/why it had happened, a question I had repeatedly asked, and always got the same response.
I asked if I could have the board and chip back as I was still the legal owner, and they refused to return it, and said I could pick it up if I so wished, knowing full well I lived 100 miles away.
Now RF Solutions are ignoring me completely
. All of the employees I have dealt with in the past have been very helpful and pleasant, but there is one person, who when it comes to customer service, I have never come across such arrogance.
I have now removed ALL RF Solutions from my systems, and replaced them all with devices that seem to have better functionality and customer service for around the same price.
We bought two mainslink pro units for a job in a holiday let. We were assured by technical that the units were the best reception on the market and yes they would cover the 20m or so that we needed. Due to the nature of getting access to the property we could not carry out the job for a couple of months after buying the equipment. When fitted the signal would not make between the receiver and transmitter. After talking to technical we removed the units.
As we had fitted one of the units we accepted we could not return it. The second unit was new and unused. When we emailed to ask if we could return the product we were told that they had a 14 day return policy and with that there was also a 30% restocking charge.
So now we have wasted over £300 on a gamble. If you want to gamble there are better places to do this than RF solutions. If you are unsure if one of their products will work, don't take the risk as you won't get any money back.
Would I buy from them again? No
READ, BEFORE PURCHASING….
Not happy with this company's policies.
If you receive a faulty item, they will not pay to have it shipped back to them and they will charge you for shipping a replacement out to you! And from my experience they are also re-stocking faulty items and sending them back out to unsuspecting customers.
How do I know? Read on:
I purchased near on £500 pounds worth of equipment from RF Solutions for a client’s job, and one of the devices (a hornet pro receiver) had an intermittent fault. So, I contacted the company, supplying them pictures and a detailed description of the fault, and got the usual lip service about how sorry they were and was asked to return it (at my own cost) for inspection. So now the onus is on me to make sure this item is returned safely, and at my cost!
Knowing that anything could happen to this on the way back and reading on their returns policy that it could take up to 4 weeks to send a replacement, I suggested to "smooth talking salesmen" that I purchase a new unit so I could return the old one in the same box. Afterall, I needed a replacement for the faulty unit, so all parties agreed, and I did just that and sent back the old unit in the new box costing me another load of postage!
At this point, I honestly expected them to refund my postage costs for all the inconvenience cause.
No, not only did they not refund my postage either way totalling £14 they listed my old unit as being (no fault found) and put it straight back into stock, even though I made it clear to them that the unit was faulty, and intermittently so.
I told "smooth talking salesman" that it was terrible customer service, expecting the consumer pay for the privilege of returning a faulty item, and was told "if I didn't like it, complain to the manager"
All smiles when they're talking your money, but rapidly falls apart when there's a problem to deal with.
So, if you buy equipment from RF Solutions and you receive a faulty item, which I imagine is quite likely seeing as it looks like their policy is to re stock faulty returns, they will expect you to send it back (at your cost) even though the item they sent you is faulty!
Ps. If you buy a hornet pro receiver and it works intermittently, it’s probably my old one !
Good luck.
I've been using cheap chinese RF kit for years and believe me, you get what you pay for.
This time I couldn't get the kit quickly enough so I bought a system from RF Solutions.
Great customer service and next day delivery and WOW, the quality of the kit is stunning. Robust construction, simple adjustments and IT JUST WORKS. The handsets transmit a single well defined pulse each and every time. No transients, no interference from other systems. Range exceeds expectations, unlike the few metres I've been getting from my previous kit.
I'm gradually going to replace my previous installations with RF Solutions kits. The increase in cost is more than compensated for by the quality of the kit and the efficiency of the staff at the company.
