totally useless as not reliable
I bought 2 5c nfcs by yubico. The login was absolutely haphazard: if you login with these and one of them would not allow you to login, then what??? I wrote 7 emails to the support of yubico and spent hours to work on this. Useless. Parts are unreliable and one doesn't match the other. Way too much risk for one's digital future!!! Lost all the money and lots of time.
Yubico 5C NFC keys not compatible with Apple
I bought 3 Yubico 5C NFC keys to secure my password manager for use with iPhone 12 Pro and MacBook Pro. Faulty connections with both devices. Registered with my password manager and then failed to authenticate me. Was saved only by my recovery phrase which I had physically written down. Have removed them from all accounts now. Wasted €216 for a headache and no better security
Claim they support Mac OS
Claim they support Mac OS, they do not. You cannot use a Yubikey to log in to a Mac as an additional layer of security in any serious way.
You can get it set up as a PIV pin however you cant use the key with disk encryption on, as it needs the password to decrypt the disk, so you cant turn on using just the key as your login.
The documentation does not mention this, it misleading
Support told me "there are other things you can use it for"
Just not for a Mac, or many other services without a subscription.
Nice idea. No practical use. Minimal support
Liars and Thieves.
Liars and Thieves.
They claim support they offer none.
The 2.7 stars rating is too high for these guys.
They hide behind there contact process and are there to help until you pay.
There are bad companies, and then there is these guys.
The product does not do what it claims. Never would activate and this is a year later trying to get support. A year and well this review is justified. AVOID unless you want to blow money on garbage, and poor support. READ BELLOW THEY WILL SAY:
Not the experience we want our customers to have.
I rebuke that, you gave exactly this.
Obsolete tech...
So, physical security keys are pretty much obsolete these days, with the rise of passkeys. A security key has become an unnecessary redundancy. All yubico is offering is their own passkey app, no different than anyone else's. Also, yubico is another of those companies that refuse to interact with other humans. In this particular case, I think it is especially a shame, because the person I emailed back and forth with, was fantastic. Very rare for csrs. I am done with companies that refuse to hire humans, like yubico.
Reliable hardware
My first Yubikey is 9 years old and still works
My 2nd is 8 years old and still works
My 3rd and 4th are much newer but with newer features as well.
Overall, pretty happy with the company.
If there's only 1 complaint its more about the software implementation of windows and other companies allowing you to use 2FA. They suck and some websites can be a bit janky to use with Yubikeys. But not Yubico's problem, pretty sure this would be a problem with any other physical 2FA
issues with NFC when using their basic C NFC keys
Bought two C NFC keys a number of months ago . USB C never a problem . NFC after a lot of attempts did initially work with my iPhones , but more recently after changing my Apple ID p/w , neither of my iPhones could detect them . I had to use my iPad to delete the keys in order to use normal 2FA to confirm the new Apple p/w on my ( Lightning ) iPhone . After a lot of correspondence with the company they have now sent out two replacement keys under the warranty . 1st attempt to register one was refused by the iPhone which said ' you cannot use this security key ' . Second attempt and it DID register the new key ...it's not very reassuring . The same happened with the second replacement key , but after more attempts was recognised by my iPhones . Both were activated by plugging them into an iPad before using ( you have to do this to activate the keys ) . Ideally would buy their USB C / Lightning keys , but they are extremely expensive . I do feel Yubikeys are a very good way to secure an Apple account but without using a password app. to generate a QR code they have limited uses ; eg. PayPal UK won't register them without a QR code . The C NFC keys are their cheapest but can't be used with the Yubico authenticator app . The 5 C NFC series can . If you need to check the authenticity of a Yubikey , you do need the Yubikey app to do so . Wish they had more uses , but banks and other online companies are using biometric passkeys instead .
Placed order not being fulfilled
Placed order. It just sits there with no change in status. Contacted customer support. They will look at it. Still awaiting response. Not what you would expect for an online order in 2024. Don't expect an order very quickly
Slow Experience
Not impressed with customer service or dispatch speed. I was told that an order I placed 3 days ago had only just "reached their system" yesterday. Bad fulfillment processes that are in dire need of modernization. It's 2024, you should be dealing with orders on the day they're received, not 72 hours later.
NFC keys not working - no explanation given
They had to update their keys - so older ones now need replacing since there is no way to update them . Postage fees are very high and their cheapest and most user - friendly USB C NFC keys work if you insert the USB C into a device but don't register the key if using NFC - recent iPhones don't detect them . As one reviewer stated , there's a real risk of being locked out of your account if the technology fails just when you need it - if you need to verify an account using an NFC key .
Online customer services have been helpful - though expect an unspecified delay , but have failed to respond to my questions about their NFC not working with NFC enabled iPhones . They have endless online articles and videos which go into ridiculously complicated depths , but all an average user wants is something which does what it says on the tin ( even that with this isn't exactly clear ) .
I have tried everything their videos have suggested , but cannot get my iPhones to detect their NFC keys . An expensive headache . This may be a serious problem if you don't have a USB C type iPhone - even if your iPhone has NFC capability . IMO . Am writing this review because they haven't responded to this concern . It can remain here until they do .
Their product didn't work
Their product didn't work. Customer service offered a partial refund (excluding shipping costs). That's unheard of. When a product is returned, all payments are refunded and some will even send the client a free shipping label. When a product is faulty, that's goes without saying.
Great concept but do your research before buying
This review relates specifically to the Yubikey 5Ci and the iPhone 14pro using IOS 17.1 in the UK.
The 5Ci key doesn’t not have the NFC facility (contactless connection) therefore it has to be inserted into the lightening port. However it will not connect unless the case is removed before insertion. I appreciate cases vary but mine is a standard apple purchased case. (Rim thickness 1 or 2 mm!) Quite frankly in my view the inability to use NFC or the lightening port without removing the case renders the key impractical.
This is not made clear when purchasing the key.
Even if this is acceptable to you it seems that most financial / bank apps in the UK do not support the concept of the key yet. If you are inclined to buy the key it’s worth checking before hand that the services you wish to use support the Yubikey
I purchased them (you need two) through Amazon and was given a refund. Yubikey were helpful up to a point but their support links are complex and cover a multitude of keys and devices.
The concept is good perhaps things will improve.
Stress-free 2FA
I've got two Yubico Security Key NFC keys and the build quality is excellent. They've been pain-free to set up on all my devices and with all of the online accounts that supports them.
It might be worthwhile checking which services support specific Yubico keys before buying them so you won't be disappointed, since it varies depending on the model you buy.
These keys have been great for my personal use and the companion app, YubiKey Manager, is nice and simple to use.
This is the 3rd key from this company, what a nightmare
This is the 3rd key from this company. It was simple enough at first but since buying one for my Android phone via USB-C it's been an hour now and I still can't work out how to register this and copy my sign-ins over from my other keys. Why can't they make it easier like cassette to cassette copying? remember that anyone? Why not have a one-click or two program that copies one key to the other instead of a load of complicated instructions? Beam me up Scottie.
UK customers - Beware the artificially high shipping fee
I placed an order with Yubico. They charged EUR15 for shipping.
My order was delivered by Royal Mail Tracked 24 service. According to the Royal Mail website, this cost Yubico GBP3.30 for an 80g shipment weight as declared on the Royal Mail label.
This means Yubico have charged an artificially inflated price for shipping (GBP3.30 is EUR3.75, which is substancially less than EUR15)
Solid 2FA
I have been using the YubiKey for over 2 years now and it has saved me and my company from potential damage on multiple occasions. Just make sure to never lose your key ;)
Great product, well-built
The YubiKey is a great product, very well-built. It's been durable and very quick when using via USB or NFC. I bought some more YubiKeys during the Cloudflare promo and they were shipped extremely fast from California to Florida. Happy with my purchases, this company cares about their users.
Order never shipped. Company unresponsive.
Ordered end of October. Almost January and no shipment. No response from company at ALL. No stock on Amazon. Either they're having serious supply issues, or they're just a non-existent company taking money for no services.
