Books Butterfly

Books Butterfly. I bought the All Month Push for $250. It promised 0 to 150 sales. Well, they hit that range. I could not identify a single sale that I could attribute to Books Butterfly. They offer no proof their actions - number of people contacted by email; actual number of readers. Nothing.

I cannot recommend this site.

Renee was my rock!!

Renee, owner of Brown Butterfly Publishing was the driving force that allowed me to reach my dream of publishing my children’s book that I had written for my son 25 years ago. She was patient with me in so many ways. Understanding and compassionate about the things I was dealing with at the time and stood in the gap for me when I didn’t feel I could continue. One to avoid

Firstly, I’ve never left a negative review on Trustpilot until today.

Unfortunately, my experience with Books Butterfly mirrored many others posted here, on Reddit, and on KBoards — something I now wish I had read beforehand.

Over the last 6 weeks, I’ve been testing around 20 different book promotion platforms, from BookBub to Freebooksy. I found Books Butterfly and opted for their $100 package, which guaranteed 1,200 downloads of a free book. The testimonials on their site looked convincing.

Unlike other promo services that promote your book on a set day, Books Butterfly spreads it over several days. In theory, this could help with visibility, but it comes with a major downside: it’s almost impossible to tell if and when the promo actually ran.

The week came and went. I saw no spike in downloads outside of what I usually receive organically (around 20/day). One day had a modest bump, but that lined up with a different promotion I was running — and the results were clearly attributable.

I contacted them to ask for confirmation: Had the promo run? If so, when and where? The response I got was curt and unprofessional. They asked for screenshots, which I provided, along with an explanation of my organic traffic. They then claimed 300 of my ~450 downloads were from their service — with no evidence provided.

Even if I generously accepted their claim, that would still be 900 downloads short of the guarantee.

To put it in perspective:

BookBub (just $10 more) brought in over 2,000 downloads

Fussy Librarian ($25) resulted in over 200 downloads

Both of those platforms gave clear, professional communication and transparent results

Books Butterfly then claimed I’d violated their terms of service (again, no explanation), and offered a full refund on the condition I agreed never to use them again.

That alone felt odd and unprofessional — not the behavior of a confident, reputable service. I accepted, and to their credit, the refund did arrive promptly.

Afterward, I dug deeper. Another review led me to where they list your book — and it was astonishing: no design, no graphics, just huge blocks of text on what looks like outdated blog pages. An organic traffic check showed almost no visitors. This made it all the more confusing how they could justify their “guaranteed” numbers.

Of all the promotions I’ve run, this was by far the worst experience. Not just for the lack of results, but because of the lack of transparency and dismissive attitude. Other platforms that underperformed were willing to offer insights, share links, and even admit to mistakes when applicable.

In conclusion: I cannot recommend Books Butterfly to any author. In my experience, they did not deliver what they promised — and worse, avoided accountability when questioned.

Thank you for your reply. I stand by my original review.

My issue isn’t just that the promotion underperformed — it’s that I was met with a lack of transparency and professionalism at every step. I asked reasonable questions, like whether the promotion had run and where it had appeared. At no point was I provided with clear proof outside of a low-traffic web page with no design, no structure, and no visibility. That I had to find myself!

I want to address one key point in your response: you selectively quoted from our email exchange, omitting parts that showed my good faith. For example, in one of my emails — which you summarized as a “claim of zero downloads” — I actually said:

“I appreciate that it's not quite the end of the promotional period, however there isn't a single download that I can attribute to this promotion. Can you let me know if you definitely ran my promotion? If it's running today then I apologise for jumping the gun...”

That’s not dishonest — that’s a professional trying to get clarity.

Instead of working with me to investigate what went wrong, you offered a refund only if I agreed never to use your service again. And now, in your public response, you’ve included personal attacks and misrepresentations, which I find deeply inappropriate.

I’ve worked with over 20 promo platforms. Not all of them performed well, but every other one responded professionally, transparently, and with mutual respect. This was the only one that didn’t.

I’m sharing my experience so other authors can make informed decisions — and I’m doing so truthfully, backed by full records.

Please consider it from the side of the book promotion company (we would appreciate it)

Author got 425 downloads instead of 1,200. First he claims zero. Then he claims only 300 are attributable to us. It's a Children's book and it is permanent free

Vast majority of authors simply take the store credit and rerun for the remaining 900 downloads (we will usually take the author's interpretation of 300 instead of 425). Children's books are very hard to promote.

Instead we have a few authors who will make wild claims (zero downloads) like this author. when their lies are caught out, then instead of simply taking the refund, they are upset their lie got caught out and want to attack us by making false claims and writing one star reviews. 3 of the negative reviews on Trust Pilot are exactly this situation. They even seem to be following the same script of making the same fake claims and ignoring screenshot proof of our readers i.e. https://booksbutterfly.com/bookpromotion/bookmarketing/proof-8-million-readers/

If an author gets 425 downloads and wants to attritbute only 300 to us. That's not ideal. however, if it workable

If the author starts off claiming zero downloads. Then there is no win-win path forward.

Last 2 negative reviews are also exactly the same situation. These 3 authors seem more mad that their white lie claim of zero downloads got caught out, than actually taking the store credit and rerunning the book. Even refund is not enough for such people. They must attack the book promotion site. Reality is that some marketing methods will not work for their book. Store credit lets them get the remaining downloads

Vast majority of people whose books miss the target (only 8% of books miss the target) are very graceful and elegant and take the store credit and rerun the book for the remaining sales/downloads

Warning: My Experience with BookButterfly's "Guaranteed" Promo

I paid $100 for BookButterfly's Gold Promo, which guarantees 1,200 free downloads—yet I have no proof they actually promoted my book.

I've run promotions with other services and hit 2,200+ downloads in a single day, so this isn’t about book quality. The issue is whether BookButterfly even does what they claim.

🚩 Major Red Flags:

Their website looks like it hasn’t been updated since 1982—unprofessional and outdated.
Their Terms & Conditions page is broken, showing nothing but a “deprecated error”—how convenient.
After paying, the fine print in their email effectively negates their so-called “guarantee.”
Their dispute rate “proof” appears to be a screenshot of Stripe/PayPal chargebacks, not actual customer satisfaction data.
Their “app” for promotions is nothing more than a Windows web app, with customer support using a personal Outlook email.
Their last Facebook post was in 2015—zero real community engagement.
📌 Does this service even exist beyond collecting payments? Right now, it looks like a glorified list where authors pay for nothing but a name drop.

🚨 Update: I tracked down what you actually get—and it's worse than I expected. Your book isn’t featured in a newsletter or app, just buried in a giant written list with no images, alongside hundreds of other books. This is why they never show actual promo examples before you pay.

👎 Final Verdict: Skip BookButterfly entirely. Instead, go with verified services like Freebooksy or ENT Reader News—they provide real promotions with real downloads.

📢 Authors deserve better. If you've had a similar experience, speak up. I'm looking into this further and will be challenging what I actually paid for.

This "service" should be shut down entirely and I recommend any authors who used it, to document everything and file an official dispute with paypal.

I can't wait to see what excuses they use to try to discredit this, but you can search kdp dashboards, and other review sites to find authors with the exact same experiences and the more of us that report it, the sooner they will no longer be able defraud people. I plan on taking full legal action and filing with Stripe and every regulatory organization within the US and Canada that will investigate, I'm absolutely shocked that they haven't been shut down yet. Authors have created entire websites about this experience and I dont take fraud lightly.

FIONA from Bookbutterfly - You are correct, I write under my pen name maybe you are familiar with that concept. Don't worry though you will know my name when you get the legal docs and formal complaints with Stripe, my credit card company, the BBB, and the CAFC, I am already collecting a list of fellow authors that have the same experience and will make sure a full investigation is launched.

I have ALL THE documentation to show clearly that my ranking has NOTHING to do with BooksButterfly and everything to do with WrittenWord media, nice try though. A desperate attempt to discredit me along with all to of the rest. We will be happy to provide ALL of this documenation to legal authorities along with the dozens and dozens of accounts from other authors you've conned and tried to discredit. Why I am pissed? Cause I paid you $100 for virtually nothing, you make ridiculous claims with no basis in reality and try to discredit anyone that disputes it, on top of that and I've been reading, dozens and dozens of account of other authors with this same experience and found out that this has been going on for years. But I have the legal experience and resources to make sure you don't do it to someone else.

Reply to FIONA: We did NOT use your service on March 10th, it appears you arent even aware of your own sales activity. We have the reciepts, invoices and sales records, and screenshots to back everything in this conversation and we have no problem providing verification to all legal entities this will be pursued with. The fact that you have to spend so much and effort discrediting people who use your service and spin your terms and conditions to sound even slightly legit, says it all though doesn't it. Concealing this must be a full time job for you.

Im saivng my docs for regulatory depts because credit to your joke of a promo is completely useless to me, I want my money back and justice and transparency for the thousands of authors you've misled and taken advantage of and until, you clearly and unmistakably disclose the actual service you are providing with a clear links and visual images on your site of the actual product vs what you claim to provide, and full refund, I will continue with action.

DO NOT USE THIS WEBSITE!

UPDATE 05.03.25: I should not have to offer to show my Amazon ads screenshot. Your company needs to create a better system to show which sales came from your service. It SHOULD NEVER be the customers job to do that. Have a system in place that can prove to customers which sales come from your service, thoroughly explain this on your website, include on your website what needs to be done if the customer does not gain all the sales in the advertised timeframe, and boom...problem solved. Get your ish together, Books Butterfly. Don't blame the customer because your business model has many holes in it.

DO NOT USE THIS WEBSITE!! This website is a scam. I have used their service (the Guaranteed 50 Sales package) twice and received 0 sales from them. They have no real way of tracking if the sales you receive are from their promo or other sources, so if you make any sales during your promo period, they will claim all of those sales were from their service. I was getting no sales from the first promo, so I started Amazon ads and got a few sales from that. When my promo was over I told them I didn't get the guaranteed 50 sales, so they had me send a screenshot of my KDP dashboard and they claimed all the sales I got from amazon ads and said I could do another promo with them to get the remainder of the 50 sales. Some nerve!! Those sales were from amazon ads, not their service! That would've been easy to prove, but I didn't have time for that, so I said "okay". Second promo with a new book got zero sales, as well. Once the second promo ended, I turned on amazon ads and started getting sales. I made sure to wait until the promo was over this time so they couldn't pretend that my amazon ad sales came from them, again.

Their responses to the Trust Pilot reviews are excuses and probably lies. DO NOT BELIEVE THEIR RESPONSES ON TRUST PILOT!! I feel they'll say anything to keep taking people's money. This business is very untrustworthy.

1) Amazon removed many of the large book promotion sites (including us) from the Amazon Associates program in 2016 when they launched Amazon's own advertising service -> https://the-digital-reader.com/amazon-brings-the-hammer-down-on-discount-ebook-sites/

Therefore, only the Publisher/Author has access to sales information. We have this listed on the website, and on the website terms page, and we also email the author.

2) As we stated in Mar 2025, author can simply email us and we can do a refund. We are not sure why the author is not contacting us and instead is attacking us. We have had authors in the past send us screenshots of Amazon Ads showing number of sales. So it is possible and easy for an Author/Publisher to share this information

3) Please note that the most effective resolution if your book promotion did not do well is to simply email us and we will resolve the issue with you over email

Respectfully, this author is being inaccurate

The author claimed all sales from 1st promotion were from 'other sources' and never showed any proof of that. If the sales were from Amazon Ads then the author could just send us a screenshot as Amazon Ads shows exactly how many sales they generate

Unfortunately, 8% of books miss the target. It is very tough to work with an author when they start claiming 'all sales are from somewhere else' and start writing things such as ->

Those sales were from amazon ads, not their service! That would've been easy to prove, but I didn't have time for that,

Fake sale "guardantees"

I had 4 total experiences in using this promo site with different books and author names and each one was a complete waste of time and money. Whether its a 30 day push or 3 day push. I got 0-2 sales. I get more than than simply from putting up an Instagram post about my book. This is the worst and most ineffective marketing site I have used. What has made me write this review however was the "Guaranteed Sales". They promised 50 guaranteed sales. I received 2 for the period, which is the same as my average without their promotion. I tried it again, with a different book and same result. Complete fake and no money back. I found than instgram posts and ads or TikTok posts and ads give massively better results. So don't waste your money with these jokers.

Author bought 3 packages. One was All Month Push and we never heard from him on how it went. If it did not do well, there is one (only one) courtesy rerun for no charge. There is no guarantee for over $1 packages

2nd was Silver 50, which got 14 sales. Not 0-2 as 'Rachel' falsely claims.

3rd was Silver 50, where author didn't discount the book, and package was run as an over $1 package. Then author tried to switch back to $0.99 promotion halfway through. Unfortunately, we cannot do that. Again, if that promotion did not do well, then author can send us screenshot and we will do a rerun (only one courtesy rerun)

For the remaining 36 sales from the sole Silver 50 package, author has already had 2 reruns

If as a Publisher/Author you are disappointed by the small number of effective book promotion sites, then this author's behavior is a good example for why no one wants to get into starting a book promotion company

Even if your book misses, you get store credit to rerun the book. Use the store credit, get the remaining sales and move on and find some promotion site/promotion method that works better for your book.

Instead the author is misrepresenting the truth and claiming he got 0-2 sales. When the book clearly got 14 sales in 1st run and he has not sent screenshots for 2nd and 3rd rerun using the remaining store credit

Firstly, we are sorry your books did not do well in the Silver 50 package which has a guarantee of 50 sales. There is store credit and a rerun if the book misses. You have to just send us a screenshot showing sales missed 50 sales.

Miss rate is only 8%. It can happen that books from one marketer/Publisher miss multiple times, though rare.

It is unfortunate that your books fell into the 8% of books that miss the target. If you email us which books you had or which email address you used for the books, then we can analyze and figure out why your 4 book promotions all missed.

Please send us a screenshot showing you got less than 50 sales and then we will rerun the book, or run a different full length book for the remaining sales

Even for packages over $1 there is one (only one) courtesy rerun for no charge if you got low sales. A screenshot showing sales of paperback and ebook are required before we can do a rerun

In the rare case the book/books keeps missing we are happy to do a prorated cash refund for the Silver 50 package.
For promotion packages for books over $1, unfortunately, there is no refund

The most common reason for a book missing is the book genres being wrong or the price not being discounted or the book not being a full length book. Once we know which email address you used, or which books you promoted with us, we can work towards a resolution.

Do not use this company

Do not use this company. I sold 15 books in 5 day promo. Not 100 plus as promised I was told my book was not long enough and that I had to get more reviews. !!!!

Then as I couldn’t start another promotion for 90 days on Amazon .com I was told that if I reduce my royalty fee that I could but this is against Amazon policy. So money wasted on empty promises.

Respectfully the author is misinformed. The author has sold 20 books so far. Promotion is still ongoing. We are happy to rerun the book for the remaining 80 sales

We have emailed author precise steps on how to discount the book. Amazon allows only one Kindle Countdown Deal per every 90 day period. However, you can discount the ebook to $0.99 14 days after the Kindle Countdown Deal has expired. So all author has to do is discount it to $0.99

Steps are

Step 1 - Log in to kdp.amazon.com

Step 2 - Instead of pressing Market & Promote next to the ebook, instead press the blue ebook price

Step 3 - This will take the author to the Pricing page

Step 4 - 3rd row on that page is eBook Pricing, Royalty etc

Step 5 - Instead of 70%, choose the 35% royalty rate. Then Author can discount the ebook to $0.99 without using the Kindle Countdown Deal option

Amazon will require a wait of 14 days, so it is not possible immediately

So there is a misunderstanding on the part of the author and we sincerely hope the author will just follow the steps we emailed him (with illustrations) instead of wrongly thinking he has to wait 90 days

The worst book promotion on the internet

This company is terrible when it comes to selling books. I got ripped off for about $375 from this company. Their website is very persuasive with selling books, saying they will give you a re-run if they don't sell books, and they did give me re-run. I understand you can't guarantee book sales! Their website is misleading and does only guarantee book sales for .99 cents and free books. I did order a different push other than the .99 cent or free books. But they know exactly what they're doing to people. I didn't get but a few book sales for a month's worth of so called advertising. And with all due respect, books butterfly and I know that is a load of crap! I went to a different company and sold more books in 1 promotion for 1 day then their entire promotion for a month. When I reached out to them they blamed it on me and attacked me saying it was my fault. LOL! Which is funny! I have had no problems promoting my books somewhere else. This is typical of people who scam people for hundreds of dollars on the internet and claim you fall into some bull-crap percentage that they created. Which is a good lie if you're dealing with a ten-year old that you can manipulate. I do realize I could be mistaken in all fairness, but that isn't the case. They took my money, sold very little books, and when I asked about it then, they were very dismissive. They blamed it on me! They recently gave a response after I left a review. And say, "We will resolve this on a public forum and lie again, like they just did! I can upload book promotions from other companies that produce sales all day long with the same books. Then when you look at the first line of their so-called resolution, they attack my faith! Wow! They began to talk about my faith and me being a Christian. And I shouldn't do this! Well, Christians tell the truth! Unlike, this company! I have removed their email that was attached to this review per their request.That email concretely reinforces what I'm saying. Unprofessional and unethical! So Christians aren't supposed to leave a review when they are ripped off? LOL! Just for the record, I amended this review to make it as accurate as possible, that way the next person that reviews it can be very aware of what they are getting into. You should be very careful about dealing with certain book promotion companies on the internet.

It is very unfortunate that this author paid $375, used our courtesy rerun and store credit option and got $700 worth of promotion and marketing for 2 months for 3 of his books, and now is making inaccurate claims

First, you bought a $150 package for over $1 books (no guarantee) and that did not do well

Please Note: You are wrongly claiming we offered you rerun to get you to buy. That is inaccurate. There is no rerun. We only offered you a courtesy rerun after your book did not do well

A 2 week promotion of a $0.99 ebook with a guarantee of 100 sales

It got 15 sales instead of 100 (you never sent a screenshot) and you asked to use the store credit to run a $250 package for Over $1 books (no guarantee)

It is very disappointing that you are making false accusations

0 to 100 sales

If you are a Publisher/Author who is frustrated with the lack of good book promotion options, this review right here should tell you why no one wants to build services for authors. Who in their right mind would work in an industry where you act in good faith, lose $155 running and re-running books for an author, and then get attacked for it

honest people trying to make a living, they refunded my book as soon as they realized their readers aren't into the genre of my book, apologized for the inconvinience and gave an explaination, feel safe to trade with these people, you can trust this site. how effective their pormotion, sadly I don't know.
