Despite being an loyal member

Despite being an affluent, high-income member with checking, savings, and multiple credit cards, PenFed consistently sabotages my financial health. After five years of perfect history, they have repeatedly slashed my limits on multiple cards the moment I make large payments. This predatory "balance chasing" destroys my credit utilization and punishes the very responsibility a credit union should reward.

I stopped using their accounts a year ago and will never return for a car loan, mortgage, or any other product. As an established, high-net-worth individual, I’m taking my liquidity and borrowing power elsewhere. They have proven they would rather penalize loyal, affluent members than support them. Do not trust them with your business.

Do not be their victim.

This company claims to handle accounts for anyone, anywhere. That claim is entirely false.

They rejected a U.S. State Department issued passport as sufficient proof of identity. They also refused to accept a government issued certified alien resident card as proof of address.

Their website blocked access from abroad, yet using a VPN triggered a security lockout.

When dealing with their customer service, they showed a complete ignorance of international realities. They actually thought that holding a resident visa in a foreign country meant a person was saying he was not an American citizen.

They demanded physical utility and phone bills over a government issued resident visa with a certified address, expecting them to be in English. They seem to think a foreign country operates exactly like another U.S. state. Out here in the real world, utilities are often charged directly to a credit card as digital line items, or paid in cash upon delivery (like handing a few dollars to a local gas bottle delivery driver). What they insisted on having did not even exist.

When presented with these facts, their very first suggestion was to cancel the account. Their attitude was strictly "our way or the highway." These people are quite prepared to leave people out in the cold. Do not be their victim.

Very disappointed in the HELOC product

Very disappointed in the HELOC product. I was told I would be able to make electronic transfers from my PenFed HELOC to my checking account at another bank. That appears to be false without walking into a branch to physically withdraw the money. This makes the product inconvenient and I won't be using it in the way I planned. I wouldn't recommend this product if ease of use is important to you.

Worst experience ever

Worst experience ever. My wife and I needed a loan for a car and it took over a month to sort out only to find out we needed to apply for a different loan and they wouldn’t allow us to proceed or even get a savings account with them. Worst bank ever. I hope you read this and steer clear from this one.

Saved by others!

My goodness, I was literally about to give these people a call to check out a loan and rates. Thank you to the people here I’ve dodged a bullet!! PenFed, you may not care what your current customers are experiencing or saying about your institution and its services… you are however losing customers faster than you know it!

Aggressive tactics and non-stop emails

I contacted PenFed about a new auto loan so we could pay off our current one. I spent about 15 minutes on the phone with a salesperson, gave her our current rate, remaining term, and monthly payment, and she came back with a quote that was more than 4% higher and about $60 more per month. It was a terrible offer, so I told her that we weren’t interested and we ended the call.

I assumed that would be the end of it. Instead, the emails started almost immediately. On the first day, I received three messages telling me I was “pre‑qualified” and needed to act quickly. I looked for an unsubscribe link, but there wasn’t one. I replied to two of the emails asking them to stop, but that didn’t work either. Two days later, I got three more emails between 9 and 10 p.m.

I never told them I was ok getting emails, and I made it clear on the phone that we were not moving forward. I then checked their website, only to find that there is no option anywhere to opt out of these emails. I finally contacted their live chat, and the representative told me the salesperson never withdrew our application—despite me explicitly declining the offer—and that’s why the emails kept coming. He said he would withdraw it, so hopefully that ends the barrage, but it’s definitely not a good look for PenFed.

My father died almost 3 years ago

My father died almost 3 years ago. I have been trying to close his account and get the $5 in the remaining balance. I have called them 7 times over the last 2 years, sent them the death certificate and letter of appointment, and each time the estate department said it would be done that day. Guess what... Just got a call from them today asking what I wanted to do. And after a heated discussion, Ian admitted they did have the instructions and addresses and he would do it today. I love having the whole painful chapter opened again and again and again.

Overseas help is slipping

Overseas help is slipping. The staff never take ownership of a complaint or reach out to you (unless you ask for it), and I’m a member for over 40 years. Their software is so antiquated that I can no longer open simple certificates of deposit as I have for years online. Shane on you PenFed.

Document account closure

Was told I'd need four separate documents, all notarized. Did that. Crickets. Called again. Was told I'd now need a different document or a doctor's note. Asked what the doctor's not should say and the agent had *no idea*. It's now been 6 weeks and it remains unresolved.

Don't waste your time

The app continually gets locked onto the log-in page. You log-in, get the green check mark and then it takes you back to the log-in page again. It's just a revolving door with no access. I may have access one day and it may be weeks before I can get back in. Don't waste your time. Just go to the main web page.

I’m sorry they don’t have a zero to…

I’m sorry they don’t have a zero to give. I transferred a small portion of a car loan to these people. Sent my title, and today 5 months later I receive a letter stating my interest rate has been raised from 5% to 17.99, due to them not receiving title. I am a businesswoman with perfect credit and I would NEVER use Pen Fed.

These guy lost my money through Zelle and blamed Chase I call Chase and nope so call again the next day and now my date of birth is changed after me calling and my wife also give the same date of birth without a problem but now a day later my date of birth is changed after?

I had an outstanding experience with Bobby at PenFed Credit Union Member Services. She is truly amazing compassionate, knowledgeable, and incredibly professional.

Bobby took the time to listen carefully to my concerns, explained everything clearly, and made sure all my questions were answered. Her patience and genuine willingness to help made the entire process smooth and stress-free.

PenFailed promises

While shopping for a car loan, I had two criteria: a low rate and the ability to register the vehicle myself to avoid additional dealer fees.

I was promised, once the loan was disbursed, I would be emailed the letter. Knowing my acquisition date was approaching, I called, on several occasions asking for an update and was repeatedly told I would receive it in time.

Unfortunately, PenFed failed to fulfill their promise, costing me over $300 in additional fees to the dealer.

In early February during a snowstorm…

In early February during a snowstorm and major cold snap, our furnace broke down. The day before, I had transferred money from an external account to PenFed savings but then transferred it back to my external account to help pay for the new furnace. A day or so later, my PenFed online account was frozen. Savings and credit card. I called. They wanted certain documents, which I sent. It’s been two weeks and I sent them an email asking what was going on.

I called and found out that the first six numbers of my external account were not visible and I would have to contact that bank so they could email those missing numbers to PenFed even though I said I could provide them. No. They had to come from the other bank.

Also, during the phone call I had to answer questions that would be hard for an imposter to answer on the spur of the moment. I am who I say I am. My husband got involved and now they’ve locked his account too.

This will be straightened out eventually, and when it is, I will be withdrawing all my money from my savings account.

Took my priciple and applied it to interest...

I paid an additional $500 each month with my payment, to be applied to the principle on a $50K car loan. I noticed they weren't applying that money to the principle but rather future payments, thusly enjoying (stealing) more interest than agreed. I called and thought that was handled years ago. Then recently I noticed the mistake. I called to get it handled and they adjusted to payment for the last month only. So basically stealing the rest.

So I'm done with this company. So sad, another great company turns to crap. Maybe they got too big to care. I noticed this when they stopped answering their phones, added endless computers to talk to me instead of humans. Middle finger in the air to you pencrap.

Terrible HELOC Experience

Terrible HELOC Experience – Wasted a Month of My Life

I had an absolutely horrible experience applying for a HELOC with PenFed.

For over a month, I was repeatedly asked for the same documents over and over — bank statements, mortgage statements, proof of expenses, income verification — despite submitting everything promptly each time.

I have over an 800 credit score and approximately $675k in equity on my home, yet underwriting kept resetting and requesting duplicate information with no consistency or accountability.

After wasting weeks sending a massive amount of personal financial documentation, I was suddenly denied with no clear explanation.

This was one of the most inefficient and frustrating financial processes I’ve ever experienced. Poor communication, disorganized underwriting, and zero respect for the customer’s time.

I would never recommend PenFed for a HELOC and will be steering others away.
