VPS IP Blocked After Just Over a Month — Disappointing IP Replacement Fees and Lack of Transparency
I purchased a VPS from RAKsmart on September 18, 2026. On October 23, 2026, its IP address was blocked by the Great Firewall of China. RAKsmart support confirmed that the IP had been blackholed.
During the little over a month that I used the VPS, my usage was relatively light. I mainly used it to access ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude, and as a proxy for downloading files. Total traffic usage was approximately 480 GB. To the best of my knowledge, I did not engage in any illegal activities or abusive behavior.
After discovering that the IP had been blocked, I contacted RAKsmart support. I was told that manually replacing the IP would incur escalating fees: $5 for the first replacement, $10 for the second, $30 for the third, and $50 for each subsequent incident.
I find this escalating fee policy unreasonable. I understand that no hosting provider can guarantee that an IP address will never be blocked. However, when customers encounter an IP address that no longer works for their intended purpose, the provider should offer a clear, transparent, and reasonable solution.
What made the situation more frustrating was that I could find the title of the relevant penalty policy in RAKsmart's knowledge base, but the page itself would not open. As a result, I could not independently verify the full terms of this escalating fee policy or confirm whether it had been clearly disclosed when I purchased the VPS.
I eventually decided to request a refund rather than pay to replace the IP. However, support told me that I had to pay a $5 penalty first. I made it clear that I would not pay any additional money and asked them to deduct the amount from my existing account balance instead. I eventually received my refund.
Although the refund was ultimately resolved, this experience seriously damaged my trust in RAKsmart. Policies involving additional charges should be accessible to customers and should clearly explain the applicable conditions, scope, and treatment of fees when a customer requests a refund. Customers should not have to deal with charges that they cannot readily verify after a problem occurs.
I recommend that anyone considering RAKsmart, especially customers who need to access overseas services from mainland China, carefully review the provider's IP replacement, IP blocking, and refund policies before purchasing. It is also wise to keep copies of the applicable terms and all support correspondence.
Based on this experience, I would not choose RAKsmart again.
