Very hard - possibly illegal - sell of insurance
I bought a cheap freezer, which arrived safely and I'm happy with it and the price. The day after ordering it I got a phonecall confirming delivery, etc. The nice man did a big talk about the great care I was going to get, with free repairs, free replacements, etc and I'd get the paperwork confirming it and I could cancel any time. I said I didn't want to sign up for that now but said I'd read the paperwork and see if I wanted to sign up or not. He then confirmed the payment details I'd used to order the freezer and I heard him brush over the phrase 'Direct Debit' and I had to stop him to very clearly say I didn't approve any Direct Debit payment. He was setting me up to pay £5 a month for a service I never asked for or approved, and I can imagine a lot of people would end up paying this without even realising. He sounded annoyed when I blocked it and hung up very quickly, saying my cheap freezer wouldn't be protected. Beware!
