Event cancelled with less than 2 hours before it was due to start
I booked on for an event in Newcastle, then on the day of the event, less than 2 hours before it was due to start I received a text message from the organiser, Helen. Helen said that the venue was double booked so the event was cancelled tonight and would now take place on the 25th May.
When I said asked if she was going to offer any freebies for the huge inconvenience this caused she said she wasn't as I had been offered free place at events before (these free places were offered as the events were low on attendance numbers and needed more people to attend at short notice to make the event work).

Andrew has attended a few of our speed dating events in the past and yes when a last minute cancelled place occurs where its not within the refund time frame, instead of just leaving the paid place empty we do offer it to a single guy or girl who are on our database - we see this as a good will gesture rather than waste the paid place. Our events are always well attended and popular as we've been running for over 15 years no so don't need to 'make numbers up' but he would surely know this from attending and regularly meeting lots of girls. Andrew has always been happy to accept these places if ever they arise.
It's a shame he then hasn't left us a positive review in the past to say this but chooses to leave this review because an event date was changed ( which I know is frustrating) then asked for financial compensation? When I apologised and explained as to why this couldn't be offered he became very rude resulting in this review being left.
Such a shame and very unnecessary. Andrew was also given a full refund.
I can't recommend this enough
I can't recommend this enough, this is why: The organisers are friendly and easy going. The venue itself is really cute with kind bar staff. The event in itself is relax and ran smoothly. To boys where fun to talk with and share the experience with. My personal view point on the night was that all everyone was really nice to talk to and ideal to meet new people and socialising.

I am a host for our events in Leicester and I really enjoy hosting for ditch or date. Although we sometimes struggle with no-shows we always manage to attract an interesting group of people and I hope to host more events in the future!

What a great night tonight in Belfast…
What a great night tonight in Belfast at the Tipsy Bird. I was nervous but had no need to be.
The host was extremely friendly and helpful.
I met some lovely girls which has boosted my confidence and would definitely recommend this to anyone thinking about it.

Booked for my first ever speed dating…
Booked for my first ever speed dating with Ditch or Date on 30th March in Liverpool and was pretty nervous to say the least. It was a 40 minute train journey away. Absolutely fine for me as I work further away than that daily. On the day of the event, I booked my train tickets. It was due to start at 8pm and at 4.38pm (less than 4 hours before the event) I got a text to explain it had been cancelled and moved to another date in the future, one which I could not attend. I explained I wanted a refund for the ticket and the train due to the fact it was so close to the event. I was told in no uncertain terms the refund for the train was not going to happen.
I asked, as a human, if they could see this was their fault and I shouldnt be left out of pocket for the fact they cancelled the event so close to the start time.
I got the following response;
"I'm not sure why you'd book an event where you require train travel.
We don't pay for train travel.
Maybe an event nearer to you would have been better.
All our city events are located so that people don't have far to go.
We don't refund any type of travel."
That is a copy and pasted message. I have the screenshots.
I genuinely, genuinely implore you to stay away from this company if this is how they treat people who's only aim is to find a partner. You're just a pound note to them. Disgusting.

This is only a snapshot of the full dialogue that was exchanged by our company and Chris. Chris has copied one section of a conversation and pasted it on here. Not sure why he did this?
Yes the event was moved to next month.
Chris then texted to request a full refund and also that his train fare was refunded to as he was travelling to the event by train.
It was politely explained on two occasions that yes no problem his full event refund would be made but we were unable to refund his train travel. This was explained to Chris on more than one occasion but he still then insisted we paid his train travel. We were trying to explain to him the reason why we couldn't refund travel and that travelling to an event such a distance may not be the best way forward as in our experience most people want to meet someone from nearer to their area.
How can you " just be a pound note to them" when your full refund was given with no issue at all?
He has omitted the rest of the conversation which is pasted below trying to help and advise him.
"I am just trying to help you for the future. We have been running events for 18 years and lots of people do prefer to meet people nearer to them - they don't like to travel to meet dates. I am only trying to give you help and advice."
Horrible customer service - only after your money!
EDIT: Hilarious and expected response from Helen, who accused me of ‘slander’ which is completely untrue! Good luck to anyone who chooses to use her in the future!
I booked to go to a 28-42 event in Belfast last night. I am at the lowest end of the age range so was understanding of the fact that everyone would be older than me. The issue was that ditch and date amalgamated another age group with the one I had booked - 40-55 and the majority of the men were over 42, with maybe only 2 or 3 in the age bracket I booked for. When I emailed to explain this morning Helen was full of excuses and was tying herself in knots to try to explain why 2 events were amalgamated without communication to the paying customers. I requested a refund but was told that I wouldn’t get one because I should have expected the men to be older - which I understand but older than the 42 advertised?! There was also talk on the night that men previously been on ditch or date had been texted that day to see if they were available to make up the numbers. Again, Helen disputed this but I don’t see why they would have lied about this. I would have given this a higher score if I felt like Helen dealt with things in the right way but she doesn’t seem to care about customer experience as soon as she has your money in her pocket. Avoid this company!!

It's such a shame to read this review especially when Holly stated that she would leave a negative review if I didn't refund her money - which is unfortunate for independent businesses that there are people that will do that.
I do understand Holly that you were disappointed that most of the men were older than you but you are 28 and booked onto an event which was aged 28-42. I also tried tried to explain to you that on this occasion even though there is a stated band most of the men were early 40s which usually doesn't happen - normally with any aged band event we have a broad range.
I'm unsure why you described my reply as 'tying myself up in knots' as my explanation for not refunding you and why the men were older I thought was very straight forward?
We did have a 40+ event (not 40-55) planned for the week previous however our host was then unable to run it so it was moved to next month however there were 3 men who were aged 42/43 so yes I did ask if they wanted to attend the 28-42 event along with 3 women too. We also have a company policy that if you don't receive a match at our event then you can attend another for free - hence me contacting 3 guys from last month to see if they wanted to attend. We didn't need to 'make up numbers' as you stated and when asking you which guys had said this you wouldn't tell me ?
The reason as I did explain that you weren't entitled to a refund was because you booked onto a 28-42 event aged 28 but also you selected people to match with also.
I have been running events for 20 years - I value all of my attendees as being single in the past I understand how difficult it can be. Our hosts and myself just want people to have a lovely relaxed time - it's so sad that some people decide to use review sites as a way to 'slander' businesses for the wrong reasons.
I hope you do find someone lovely Holly as I'm sure you are a lovely person yourself. I did offer for you to attend a lower aged event for free so that you would meet guys of similar age to you but you declined this.

Hi Juliet - you attended our sold out Belfast event where two events were taking place in our Tipsy Bird venue. It was busy as there were two sold out events taking place for two different age groups. You met 20 men and selected quite a number of them for a date. I'm sorry that you received no matches from this event and are entitled to a free event because of this but it's disappointing that you then choose to then leave this review because of this?? I can understand your disappointment that you met a lot of guys and didn't get a date but that is why we then offer another event free of charge - I'm unsure how meeting 20 guys in one night is a waste of time and money - surely the opposite?
You have since been in contact with me after the event requesting your matches and at no point on the night or via contact with me did you mention anything negative about the event - until receiving no matches - this is so disappointing and confusing that you've chosen to do this.

I had a lovely time last night at the ditch or date event. It was really good as a single person to be able to go out on Valentines Day in Edinburgh to meet a potential partner. Very thoughtful of Ditch or Date. The host Kerri was really nice, smiley, chatty and organised the event in a lovely way. I booked the event with Helen who was lovely also. If you are thinking of booking I would, as it’s a great way to meet a potential partner.

Absolute worst speed dating experience…
Absolute worst speed dating experience I've encountered. This company is a complete shambles. They changed the venue on the day of the event and it turns out the booking hasn't even been made at the venue. The general manager at the place had no idea what we were talking about, lots of people turned up and there was nowhere for us to go. On top of that it was valentine's day and just a miserable evening. I expect a full refund!!

Lola Lo’s weren’t open on Tuesdays so I had to find another venue which did prove difficult re getting private space and on Valentine’s night.
I booked via their booking system and had confirmation to say we were booked. I then received further confirmation to say my deposit of £10 pp had been confirmed too so I was happy that the venue was booked. It’s a chain so you can’t ring to book directly but when everyone arrived the manager hadn’t been informed. We then did try to secure another venue but understandably the group of people who’d arrived first wouldn’t wait. I understand everyone’s annoyance. My company isn’t a shambles. We run events throughout the country well each month unfortunately on this occasion communication between the central office and the venue fell down. I am truly sorry and am sorry you chose to leave this review instead of contacting me directly to give me the chance to apologise and explain. We emailed everyone the day before too to explain the venue change but did send out the text an hour before. If you want me to ring you to apologise also I’m happy to.

This has never happened before and I’ve run successfully for 18 years.
I add you onto another event for free so you can get the proper experience of our events.
It will be at Lola Lo’s.

Really unorganised and they changed the date one day before so I couldn’t make it. Also they didn’t refund me I emailed and texted them many times but no one replied.

Absolutely recommend Ditch or Date
Absolutely recommend Ditch or Date. Helen the host was fantastic friendly bubbly lady, explained everything that was going to happen and really settled my nerves. I’ve tried various ways to date but can say hands down speed dating has been top of the list. I was surprised at the great variety of choice from various backgrounds personalities, careers to hobbies the gentleman had. It was great to hold an actual conversation with someone and have a laugh.
If you’re nervous or shy don’t be afraid to go along as I’ve also made some great friends with the ladies who also attended and I know some of the men have also made friends too.
