Botched job, unacceptable after-sale care, denial of liability... though a much appreciated recovery

[UPDATE (10.02.26)] A few weeks since leaving my original TrustPilot review, the manager of JB Heating (Jon) unexpectedly and spontaneously reached out to me. Jon offered his explanations and unreserved (and genuine from what I could tell) apologies for a business experience that, in the light of additional information that had since transpired from other jobs with separate customers, he recognised to have been exceptionally bad and not in line with the standards he sets out to provide to his customers. Jon additionally offered a financial compensation for the trouble I underwent; while noting the significance of my ask, he also recognised that it matched my negative experience fairly and awarded it to me, ultimately putting his money where his mouth is. If this is not genuine after-sale customer care and problem mitigation, then I don't know what is: hence my revised grading of my experience.

[Feedback around job] I'll admit I had originally approached JB Heating Services (JBHS) largely reassured by the generally positive feedback I had seen on TrustPilot. What follows goes quite contrary to that impression, especially from an after-sale and customer care perspective.

Last November JBHS quoted me for a domestic immersion tank replacement job in York, which I gave the green light to. The evening before the scheduled job took place JBHS notified me (not by phone but unhelpfully e-mail!) that their supplier hadn't provided them with the tank, and postponed the job by 24hrs; not a great start, still finding it puzzling that such information would only come to light at the 11th hour. Even more surprisingly, installation was paused on the day as JBHS weren't sure I was the actual client; something I had made abundantly clear in previous (also written) communications. Upon speaking with the firm's manager to reassure him -- I was in the middle of work meetings and couldn't believe there was an idle engineer at home stalling -- he admitted that communication on JBHS' part had left to be desired.

Unfortunately the installation job wasn't done properly, in that the night section of the tank wouldn't heat up. After a two-day chase-up with misleading feedback between JBHS and their engineer, JBHS told me that they had carried out the job "successfully and to the highest standards" (verbatim), and I had to sort the outstanding issue -- which they arbitrarily attributed to a fault in my electric home supply -- on my own with an electrician. The independent electrician I hired subsequently stated in a report that "[...] the stat on the bottom element [...] was not positioned correctly so was not making contact through the stat to the element behind [...]" (verbatim), unequivocally diagnosing the issue with faulty installation, while confirming that there was no issue with the electrical supply.

After a week or so of fruitless requests for compensation for JBHS' botched installation and refusal to provide after-sales care, to which JBHS would consistently respond by denying liability and eventually suggesting the fault happened post-installation (!), I threatened to escalate my grievance to the courts. Only at that point JBHS met my compensation request.

Professional and polite throughout

We were a last minute booking however they were clear on when engineer may arrive and on costs. Engineer (Jason) we had was extremely professional and fixed our issue quickly which we are truly grateful for with a small child in the house. Would absolutely recommend to others based on this interaction.

I cannot praise this company enough.

I cannot praise this company enough. We have had 3 engineers out to our old boiler (not fitted or serviced by this company) over the last month, Jason,James & Gary. They all were helpful in a polite, very respectful way, explaining the problems with our boiler, which eventually led to us buying a new one as ours finally broke completely. This was fitted within 2 days of the old one breaking. JB Heating you have got it 100% right. Lovely staff and great work ethics across the board. Thank you.

Staff are friendly and efficient

James came to look at my boiler. Diagnosed the problem and got it switched back on with half an hour. Friendly and efficient. Talked me through a everything he looked at.
Garry came to do the permanent fix. Very friendly and polite. Chatted with me throughout, without wasting time.
Everything working again.

Excellent company

Excellent company. Contacted them through watapp on Monday booked in boiler service for Tues. We were worried they wouldn't have anyone to do the job as the boiler is in a caravan, but Matt came and knew exactly what was needed.Lovely man, very friendly and a job well done.
I will definitely use them again and I highly recommend .My only gripe was I wasn't given an estimate of the time, only the date. An Am or Pm would be nice.

Great boiler installation

Really efficient service. Gary was a great engineer. Fitted our boiler with neat pipework and he was super friendly and helpful. He cleaned up well after the job too. Would definitely recommend.

Excellent company

Excellent company, would definitely recommend. Needed out downstairs hot and cold water pipes completely changing due to leaks. Got the work booked in quickly and Matt who did the job was excellent throughout, very knowledgeable and did a great job fitting the new pipes, manage to get the work completed quicker that what we expected.

Will definitely use an again and would encourage other to use this company too!

Darren

We contacted JB heating regarding my elderly mothers shower which was leaking. They sent an engineer named Darren. What a lovely young lad. He’s very knowledgeable and chatted away to my elder mother re assuring her all through the process. This engineer is a credit to JB heating and it’s very hard to find a professional engineer like him. We will definitely be using JB heating again.

Darren was very helpful and accommodating.....polite.....sunny disposition.
