Deeply Concerning Experience
I travelled six hours today to collect a dog I had been told was reserved for me. Before travelling, I was explicitly told I did not need to bring my resident dog, after providing a detailed profile of him and being told the rescue dog had been tested with larger dogs and was fine. On arrival, however, I was told there had been a mix-up and that I could not take her without him. The communication throughout was poor, with repeated mix-ups and unclear information.
The conditions were also deeply concerning: an overwhelming smell of urine, excessive barking and what appeared to be overcrowding and unsafe mixing of dogs. Some enclosures also appeared to be out of public view, which was unsettling. The dog was described as a Bichon Frise and shy, but did not appear to be a Bichon, looked unhealthy and poorly groomed, and had visibly neglected nails. Staff were rude, tight-lipped and unwelcoming.
I completely understand a rescue requiring dogs to meet before adoption, but this should have been made clear before sending us on a six-hour journey. Despite coming home empty-handed, I was ultimately glad I did, as I genuinely don’t know what I would have been bringing home.
I gave my own dog an extra hug, washed off the experience and tried to put it behind me, but it is something I won’t forget. I sincerely hope investigations into the organisation deepen and continue, and that the welfare of the animals there is properly scrutinised.
Caring and dedicated
We have adopted two dogs from Many Tears. They do amazing work they really care about the dogs. They work incredibly hard and they have such dedication giving the dogs a better life.
Both our dogs have been in good health and have adjusted to life living in a home it’s taking time patience but it’s been so rewarding and we would recommend many Tears to anybody who is able to adopt from them
We saw a beautiful cat online and…
We saw a beautiful cat online and reserved her. We were made welcome, met her and spent time with her. Her paperwork gave her a clean bill of health.
The day after we fetched her we noticed her eye was running.
We were in the vet surgery within a week. I rang the centre to ask about it and no one was interested. She had conjunctivitis.
Whilst in the vet surgery we were told her teeth were bad...gingivitis etc.
Here we are 4 months later with £1300 of dental treatment in September.
The insurance company tried to contact the vet who had examined her in Ireland. They failed to return calls or answer e mails. Very suspicious.
Lots of questions go unanswered. Be careful if you adopt a cat from a pedigree farm. Make sure you ask the right questions and be aware that it takes a good year to socialise a little sweetheart who is unsocialised and has had a sad life. We love her to bits but we would be much less naive and much more discerning if we adopted again.
Here i am some time later. The vet bill has £3400. Be warned. Be careful
It’s a long road but very rewarding. Thanks Many Tears.
I have adopted four dogs from Many Tears over the years since 2017. I find this Rescue to be extremely caring and the dog’s welfare is their absolute priority.
My dogs have all had emotional difficulties, which took time and lots of regular routine to help them overcome. Our spaniel which we adopted in October 2025 (9 months ago) will still not sit in the same room as my husband and runs to her safe bed should our adult son visit. In many other ways she is making progress but it is an expectedly long road.
I read the negative reviews and I empathise with the disappointment felt by prospective adopters who were unable to adopt the dog of their choice. Adoption, in my view, must be about the needs of the dog. The best and most informed about the animals needs are those caring for it.
I cannot praise this Rescue highly enough as it must take considerable strength and focus on the needs of the animals to do all possible to ensue the best adoptive match for some seriously damaged animals.
My dogs on average took two years to become the most loving companions I could imagine and I will always be grateful to Many Tears for allowing me the opportunity to adopt them.
Let down by one staff member
We went to the rescue for a tour and met some wonderful staff and dogs. I was recommended visiting by family and friends who have adopted dogs. It was a lovely experience however there was one individual working on the phones who I know other people have had issues with. He was rude, kept cutting me off and sighing at me and then when I tried to explain which dogs we were interested in when he was clearly just trying to get me off the phone. I wanted to overlook it but when he swore at me we decided to look elsewhere. Such an amazing team let down by one staff member.
Fantastic place with caring people
After losing our old boy last year we thought it’ll be nice to take another little rescue Cav as company for our two little rescue girl cavs and give them their family pack back
We went online and found manytears that had a little Ruby Cav that had been dumped by a breeder! Now reading the reviews I can see that people are moaning about how strict they are with their Adoptions? Good I wouldn’t have it any other way …. Yes they ask questions Yes they want videos of the home and garden and finally yes they want a meet and greet before adoption
After what some of these Animals have gone through these guys just want the best for them and I don’t have any issues with what they do! Good on them and in fact Iam going to sponsor a kennel a month to help the good work they do! Excellent team of people and what they do is amazing
Thank you little Gumbo is settling in lovely and we all love him dearly
Avoid
We applied for a dog, got a call the same day plus a video home check (all very quick compared to other rescues), we travelled 3 hours to visit this dog with our dog and children, we knew we wouldn’t be able to bring it back the same day as there were current health issues being treated. They had reserved the dog for us.
A date was set for us to collect the dog, received phone call the day before to say we couldn’t collect as someone had made a mistake booking us in.
Week after week I rang to ask for updates, promised calls back-nothing. Emails not replied to either.
6 weeks we waited on broken promises until we decided to walk away-it appears there were further health issues than what we had originally been told.
Each time I rang I spoke to a different person who had no idea that we had even met the dog or that it was reserved for us. One call was taken by a very rude man who clearly doesn’t enjoy his job!
Unfortunately the dog missed out on a loving home.
Upon visiting the kennels I felt uneasy taking our dog in, the place was dirty, poo left in the meeting paddock by previous user-children had to be careful where they stood, broken items and bits of random wood strewn about the place. The kennel hand had no information on this particular dog-it seemed we knew more from the advert than what they did of the dog.
In hindsight I wish I had walked straight away rather than hanging on.
Disappointing when we were all set on bringing them home and had items ready to welcome them.
Personally from my experience I would avoid. I’ve worked in rescue centres and would never expect a customer to be treated like we had.
Recent Adoption - Very Happy With The Staff Support
We have just recently gone through the adoption process and successfully managed to adopt a dog from Many Tears. We have been familiar with this rescue centre for many years, as we are members of several dog groups on Facebook who support them, and are aware of their rigorous guidelines for finding the correct home for the individual needs of each dog. We have also, way in the past, been rejected as potential adoptees ourselves as the resident dog we had at the time was an unsuitable partner for the dogs in their care. And quite rightly so, I would be very disappointed with any rescue centre who put the needs and wants of the adoptees before the needs of the animals in their care. The dog we have homed has very specific needs and we were lucky enough this time to be in a position to offer the right home, since our previous dog has sadly now passed away and we can dedicate the time needed to this new dog.
We visited the dog several times, and were only ever greeted with warmth, care and understanding, but most of all I felt that the dog was the priority - as it should be - and what we wanted or could offer, whilst important, had to be suitable for this particular dog. The love and affection shown by the dog towards the staff was obvious to see - and dog's do not pretend to like anyone - they either do or they don't - unlike humans they show the truth.
Does Many Tears make it easy to adopt? No. But why should they? Do we like being told we're unsuitable? No. I didn't like it either, but putting my selfishness aside, I did understand that they only had the best interests of the animals as their priority. Quite rightly so!
I can only assume that the negative reviews seen here are from disgruntled potential adoptees who don't like taking no for an answer or being told that something about their lifestyle is unsuitable, even after perhaps putting in the work filling out applications. If there weren't so many selfish people in the world to begin with, rescue centres like Many Tears would not be necessary, and we should try to support them instead of trying to get them shut down by leaving negative reviews because we can't get what we want. How many animals will need to die because rescue centres get closed because people complain when they don't get their own way?
Wonderful rescue
From the initial application/email communication, to the home check (which was very thorough, ensuring we had locks on gates and also a cover over the pond etc) we were accepted. We were given a time to come and meet her and were asked to bring along our resident dogs. We were greeted by a lovely man who took us to a large outdoor area so we could meet our little dog. We also met Lori (shout out to her), who had been looking after our little dog and she showed us funny videos she'd taken of her. As our dog had special needs with her eye, we were shown how to apply medication to ensure it was done correctly. We were also given some food and medication. We now 6 weeks into a beautiful new life with our little dog. I cannot recommend MT enough. The care and kindness they showed was incredible.
Would give zero stars if possible
Would give zero stars if possible. Went through adoption process and spoke on phone a couple of times with a lovely lady, very polite, helpful and informative. Homecheck passed no problems. Emailed them on weekend asking for a phone call on Monday if possible, as I just wanted some more info from someone who knew the dog and had spent time with him. Received a phone call on the Saturday, even though I’d requested a call on Monday! From what I can only describe as a very belligerent and passive aggressive person, who actually did nothing at all to address my questions/ concerns, refused to give me his name, and then decided that he was going to unreserve the dog and make him re available for adoption. I had made no mention at all of not wanting to proceed, and had spent money on having everything ready for him when I brought him home. I was in shock because I couldn’t believe what he had done, just because I had asked a question. Was also told by him that I would have to look elsewhere as I would never be able to adopt from many tears!! This person needs to attend a customer services course asap as his social skills were zero and his attitude completely uncalled for. May have been run off his feet and busy, but absolutely no excuse for that appalling attitude and behaviour.
My daughter & I had the most amazing day…
My daughter & I had the most amazing day volunteering at Many Tears. We met lots of dogs. The young, the old, the playful ones & the gentle timid ones. Some were just excited to play & others just quietly come over for a little sniff. We got to sit with the dogs in their heated & clean kennels & met some of the staff who were all friendly. Going there & seeing how well organised the centre is & watching how loved & cared for all the dogs are is so heartwarming. It’s such a special place, we feel very lucky we experience it & would love to go again. Would highly recommend visiting & volunteering for the day.

I have had 4 rescue dogs from many tears and they are the best rescue centre I have ever had dogs from. I am so sorry to hear what is happening at the moment but these things happen and I don't think it's right that the lady that started many tears should be penalised for something that's not her fault. Where would we be without people like her saving these lovely animals we really need people like her who really care.
Excellent communication
Excellent communication. Such lovely friendly, helpful volunteers. They really care about the animals in their care. Totally dedicated.
An amazing rescue
My first goal when I retired was to adopt a dog from Many Tears, as their write-ups were fantastic.
It wasn’t an easy task, as I needed a dog that could go solo and I began to wonder if it would happen but at just the right time, two such dogs appeared on the site. Dilemma! The deal-breaker was cat-friendliness and the current incumbent lied through her pearly little teeth, assuring staff that she ADORED cats. Well, we successfully worked on that and I was privileged to adopt the best dog I could possibly have had.
Leading up to the adoption, I found the staff helpful and responsive. They provided all the information in their hands and absolutely correctly, took all my circumstances into account.
Obviously, adopting a rescue dog is a bit of a lottery. The staff only know what they are told when dogs arrive (it’s the same for every rescue - all but one of my animals have been adopted) but I was prepared to take this risk and have been repaid 100 fold.
Despite the busy-ness of the rescue, everyone is kept well informed through Facebook, the website, Sylvia’s diaries etc. There are amazing fund-raising efforts many by volunteers (I’ve enjoyed helping here) as well as staff. Sylvia’s incredible 280 mile walk to secure the long-term future of the rescue left me in absolutely no doubt as to her vision and purpose.
I have recommended Many Tears to numerous people and none of them have been disappointed when they’ve adopted from there. The love, dedication and sheer hard work have made it such an inspirational rescue in Sylvia’s hands. Thank you for all your dedication.
Many Tears saved my Yorkie.
I home check for MT, and I have a rescue Yorkie. I had a call asking if I could help with an emergency foster. I could, and fell in love with MT Shish, now Jessie after her human GGrandma who loved dogs. Jess is an ex puppy farm breeder who was in a terrible state. Half weight, she had never been outside, or on grass. Without MT she would have been dead. But because they saved her and asked me to take her she is having a lovely life. She goes to our country park most days. She also does to the beach in Norfolk. She has a Labrador and Westie brother and a westie sister. MT have been wonderful. They saved her and the lives of other dogs. They help you when needed. Wonderful charity.
The Perfect Rescue
Many Tears were perfect from start to finish when adopting my collie Torak(formerly Zippy). They were thorough and efficient to ensure he was a good fit for me, took care at each stage from application, home review and introduction. His handler Liam was very helpful and followed up after the adoption to check in on him. He was clearly well cared for at the rescue and any support I required afterwards they took great care with and found the appropriate people to advise. My family has adopted 3 ex-breeding dogs from them who are now thriving and this has also been their experience every time, they are truly about ensuring the best life possible for each animal.
Thank you Many Tears
Really care about the dogs, and because of Many Tears so many dogs go on to live wonderful lives in happy homes....our beautiful chocolate labrador is one of these! Adoption process wasn't easy; but adopting a dog is not a 'right', but a privilege. Homing dogs to the correct homes is a difficult process and those who know the dogs are understandably careful to choose the right home to limit the chances of failure. Really helpful, friendly staff when we took our dogs to meet our new girl, and spent time with us introducing the dogs to each other. Thank you Many Tears.
I have followed Sylvia and Many Tears…
I have followed Sylvia and Many Tears for many years, and knew that when the time came we would adopt our next Dog from them. We initially were turned down for some Dogs, which is completely understandable, rescue dogs come at different ages and from different experiences, which have shaped their lives so far. People need to understand the dogs are traumatised and that they might not be the best fit for many homes. The problem is, people want a dog NOW, they are not prepared to WAIT, until the right dog is found. We eventually were matched with our little pup, she has clearly been damaged with her first years being used for breeding, but slowly, VERY slowly, she is learning to be a beloved member of our family. When we went to collect her, the premises were clean, lots of enrichment for the dogs waiting for their forever homes, and all the staff were friendly and approachable. You could just tell that love lived there. I highly recommend.
This rescue centre is fabulous
This rescue centre is fabulous. The staff are so dedicated. So much thought is given to providing a safe, clean and supportive 'home' environment for the dogs. Our vetting process was thorough but needs to be as it helps ensure the dogs move to a permanent home. We were impressed with the entire process.
Our dog is thriving and brings us so much joy.
The animals are treated well and are allocated a key worker who spends time with them and gets to know them well which helps the adoption process. It was clear the volunteers are dedicated.
The facility needs more space to enable more rescues! This is a safe haven for the many ex-breeders dogs, abused, unwanted and other sad situations. We we visited last we donated blankets and dog jackets stitched by my elderly mother. A kind member of staff came to speak to my mum and personally thanked her. This was an emotional moment.
The shop on site is a bonus as is the parking area and access to a local groomer.
Sylvie is an angel and is unrelenting in her drive to rescue animals.
When our dog passes, we will adopt another.
Long may this rescue centre exist.
More interested in social media than finding good homes!
Very disappointing experience with the adoption process at Many Tears.
I fully support rescue centres having strict adoption policies and I have successfully adopted animals before, so I understand the need for thorough checks. However, the way our application was handled felt extremely unprofessional.
We completed the adoption form in great detail and later received an email asking for additional information about our working hours. We responded promptly with a detailed explanation and even attached our work rotas. I explained that we already have a dog who is never left alone. In the very rare circumstances that he might be alone for more than a few hours, we arrange for a dog sitter to come to the house.
I also made it clear that I work from home with the dog in the same room as me, and that our work schedules are flexible so that one of us is always present. In reality, our dogs receive near 24/7 care.
Despite this, the response we received simply stated that we were “not suitable” due to the mention of a dog sitter. None of the other information we provided appeared to be considered. It felt as though the brief reference to a dog sitter was picked out and used as the sole reason to reject the application.
I find it very difficult to understand how rescue dogs are expected to find good homes if the only acceptable adopters are people who never work. Many responsible dog owners work while still providing excellent care.
To make matters worse, the reply email even contained the wrong dog’s name, which suggests the application was not reviewed carefully. Reading other reviews, it seems this may be an ongoing issue.
It would have been far more professional to arrange a short phone call to discuss the application properly rather than dismissing it so quickly. Unfortunately, it feels like there is more time for social media posts than for meaningful communication with potential adopters.
A very disappointing and narrow-minded experience.
