Had a PUCK fire system installed in 2017

Had a PUCK fire system installed in 2017.

There were problems during installation and it leaked during testing due to faulty connections. They had to cut holes in the ceiling and walls to find all the connectors and replace causing a huge amount of damage.

A year after installation I was contacted by a Mr Mark White of Storage and Shipping Solutions UK Ltd t/a Mist Safety UK who followed up with an email stating that:

'You have within the last 12 / 24 months had a PUCK Water Mist System / Nebula System installed within your home or site.

The system was manufactured by PUCK Fire Limited or MFS Ltd who have recently ceased trading and a company Hi-Pro Industries Ltd has bought the rights to the manufacturing and sales of the PUCK system which means you now have no manufacturing warranty. MFS Ltd are also no longer in Business along with another company that was set up called Elan Ltd'.

It has come to our attention through some of PUCK Fire Limited distributors, that there is a potential concern with the systems sitting at high water pressure over a prolonged period of time. The issue has come to light because some pipes have come out of fittings which have been ok for months causing flooding.

The problem occurs with the red flexible pipework and fittings supplied by Puck Fire Ltd, these parts have been withdrawn from sale by Puck Fire, the reason given by Puck Fire Ltd was there “was a bad batch of fittings” As distributors for Puck we have to follow there manual and install and commission their systems to this manual.

The manual has now been changed and currently asks for hydraulic hoses to be installed instead of the red flexible pipework. As Puck is under new management you have nowhere to claim if you have a problem.

We highly recommend the new system modification is carried out to limit potential excess water damage following a system activation or system pipework failure.

This means you will have to replace all the red puck pipe work and Nozzles – We can adapt the pump to take the new hydraulic pipe work.

The cost of the modification will be £TBC + VAT per system,

We as a company understand that you may not want to pay the additional cost or even want the modification carried out. If you DO NOT have the modification carried out we cannot accept any liability for any damage caused by Puck Fire Ltd equipment.'

Needless to say the quote was pretty close to the original installation cost. A nightmare experience from start to finish. Personally I would steer clear.

This thing does not work

This thing does not work, it does not hold pressure, the installer have tried 6 times now and still not holding pressure, my experience is to avoid this product. I will post here if it gets fixed. Can I get my money back? Can I claim the cost of pulling my house apart again to install a another system ?

I wish these reviews had appeared here…

I wish these reviews had appeared here before we had this system installed. We would never have gone with Puck.
We had Cat Fire install the system for us when we had a loft conversion last summer.
In October 2018 I was in the kitchen when there was a loud pop and a rushing noise as the pump kicked in downstairs in our garage. to my horror the mist system was now in operation but there was no fire!
I ran downstairs and turned the pump off. Back in the kitchen there was already 1cm of water over the floor. Many of my books on a shelf were soaked. Water was still pissing out of the nozzle. I ran back and switched off the water.
I phoned Cat Fire and they promised to come out a few days later. They never showed up!!
You can imagine I was livid. I finally managed to track them down and someone eventually came out and replaced the nozzle and promised to send it to Puck for "analysis".
Then I finally got a response that they couldn't tell what had happened because the nozzle bulb had exploded and there was nothing left to examine. I could have told them that. They said it could have been dropped or hit by something thrown by a child.
So the pump has been off since this happened. Imagine if we'd been away? Two floors would be ruined. Or if the loft nozzle had failed we'd have ruined most of the house. It's unthinkable.
We are now in a battle with Cat Fire and Puck to sort this out. I want them to accept liability in the event their system fails. They have agreed to this but still nothing in writing.
I also want them to modify the installation to cut off the mains water after the pump finishes. The pump runs for 30 mins after which time mains water carries on running through indefinitely!
They are supposed to be coming tomorrow but I have no faith they will turn up.

I would avoid this company and this product like the plague.

We would have gone with iMist but they couldn't come for another two weeks and we were under pressure from the builders to get the floors down. It's a decision we regret terribly.

We too have had nothing but trouble…

We too have had nothing but trouble with the Puck system and the companies that fit them. Initially Mist Fire Suppression came to do our job and extracted thousands of pounds in up-front payment, did one days work and quickly declared themselves out of business. The next day the same company director, Neil Perring, approached us with an inflated price to finish the works through another of his companies, Elan Facilities operating from the same address....
The first problem that we had with the pump was that the hose blew off it and flooded the room is was in, this has left us with no confidence in leaving the house. The self test is meant to run once a week and regularly goes off more than once a week. More recently we thought we had a leak on a sprinkler head so turned off the water supply. In the meantime the pump activated electrically, ran continually and got so hot that it became a serious fire risk. At the time of our problems Puck continued to supply these companies/installers knowing of the problems that they were having. The pump is poorly designed with the electrical connections underneath the pump so hard to access once the pump is installed. We were told at one point that Puck had problems with their compression fitting olives causing connections to blow off. Regretfully we feel it is a poor system that has been badly designed and affiliation given to companies with poor knowledge and skills are trying to take advantage of the high costs they are able to demand by claiming to be experts in this field. They have no accountability and ask for huge up-front fees. Be wary.

Great idea - Poor execution

Great idea, poor design execution, very poor support (as in none). Don't buy.

The concept is great, looks good etc. In reality it has been poorly tested and I have concerns that it will not work properly in a fire. The pipework on the website seems to have been changed from the plastic tube I have to a more substantial industrial hydraulic hose which gives me some concern about the durability and heat resistance of the hose installed. The plastic hose installed is not crosslinked and will get significantly weaker over 70 degrees. I'm worried if we have a fire will the pipe burst and render the system useless.

The control board and hydraulics are problematic and I frequently get fault warnings. This is due to three reasons:
1. The poor self test software routine does not seem to allow enough time to settle and test the pressure or gets stuck in as loop resulting in some weekly self tests where the solenoid dumps the pressure, pump kicks in and then it just keeps cycling. It should only do this once. This will kill the pump eventually.

2.The pump produces more head than the setting of the safety pressure relief valve, so every time it does a weekly test cycle or jockeys (briefly pumps to re-pressure the system due to a slow leak) the valve pops slightly and if it does not re-seal properly the pump jockeys every 10mins or so. These valves are not supposed to operated on a regular basis for exactly this reason. I presume the low safety valve setting is because the pipework or other componets cannot take the max pump pressure, which if its true is poor engineering.

3.The self test often results in a warning light as it does not seem to allow the pressure to settle for long enough or there is an error in the reading. Switching the unit on and off results in an 'ok' light without any pumping - henced this is a software issue.

The app has been 'coming soon' for at least 2 years - this gives you an insight into how proactive the puck team is.

I don't recommend this system, it will be problematic which is the exact opposite of what you need for a mist system. Its a shame as the concept has great potential.

Constant issues with PUCK!!

We had a puck system installed by Edko mist fire protection in May 2018 and we have had non stop issues. The pump pressurises itself at least 4x a week at different times and we had a pipe burst off which flooded the house. The company aren't taking any ownership of this and have ignored all of my emails asking for updates and to fix the issue. I have tried to raise a formal complaint and request the pump to be replaced and this request has also been ignored. The company are liars and will not accept any form of blame for the issues and have blamed us to tampering with the pump. They finally got in touch with me and advised I need to pay another £1300+vat if I want it fixed and an upgrade done to ensure the system is better... I have reached out to other suppliers who also use PUCK however I'm not left with much hope as these companies have also been mentioned in other people's reviews and now I don't know what to do...rip out the whole system and go to another provider or pay more money on a potential faulty system and run the risk of my house flooding.

Flooded my house

It is regretful that I find myself writing this review as the product has promise to provide an elegant solution to home fire safety.

However, this is equipment that is going to be built into the fabric of your home for the life of the building and as such you need to be comfortable that the equipment is not going to fail and that the company is going to be around to support you into the future. I cannot be sure of either of these.

Most importantly – only months after being commission my system failed and flooded my house that I had just renovated with all of my savings and had put a huge amount of effort into. This failure was catastrophic and had I of not been at home would have completely flooded my home as it is designed to keep pumping and pumping until someone pulls the plug out of it.

Essentially a connector between to ceiling mounted nozzle and the pipework broke and this caused the pump to push water through the system. No alarm went off and it was only because I happened to be woken by the noise of the pump two storied down that I went downstairs to find my converted basement had been flooding for the last 15 minutes. All over my belonging which were being stored in the area at the time.

The fact that this has happened after only a few months now leaves me in a difficult dilemma; leave the system turned off and jeopardise the safety of my loved ones in the house or leave it turned on and risk returning to my home with it completely flooded. One of primary things a fire sprinkler system should not do is fail catastrophically and flood the building. Traditional mains-feed sprinkler systems are tried and tested not to do this and I wish I had gone down this more conventional route now.

It is also worth pointing out that one of the pumps had already had to be replaced as the first one failed too.

As I mentioned at the beginning another important consideration is whether the compay is going to be around in the years to come to support this equipment. The owner of Puck went into administration and it was purchased by another company called Hi-Pro, who also seems to be a small company. My first installer also went into administration twice – illegally passing me off between the first and second incarnation of their company so as to keep taking my stage payments to ‘purchase the equipment from Puck’. This equipment was never ordered from Puck and they disappeared with several thousand of pounds of mine. Another installer, Total Mist, then agreed to pick up the installation and commissioning. Total Mist has since done the same thing (changing their name to TM Services) despite it being the same people and the same address etc. and are using this to deny any liability for the incorrect commissioning of the system “this was done by Total Mist and not TM Services”. Despite my invoices having TM Services at the top of the page. All in all – their installer network is the worst of the worst of unreputable contractors. Puck need to accept some responsibility for managing the reputability of their approved installers and I fear that both they as a company and their installers are on fragile ground already.

In Elan Facilities Managements administration directors report (which is available publically via Companies House) they point the blame at Puck for the ultimate demise of their business due to supply chain issues. But I don’t trust them either to be honest.

I would also like to point out that I have given both Puck and the installer Total Mist (now trading ‘separately’ as TM Services and hence denying all responsibility) multiple opportunities to make good my situation but both have not replied to emails or requests for their Public Liability insurance details.

Think carefully about this expensive investment and the security of your belonging and loved one before making this decision!

*DO NOT USE THIS SYSTEM*

*DO NOT USE THIS SYSTEM*

It’s not safe and here is why.

We went with a company called Mist FS for our initial installation. The company went into administration. Many people lost money and many of the people who worked for this organisation are still practicing under different company names.

The problem we have been told was that they were not installing the system correctly. This led to non-functioning systems in our case and for others we heard their houses flooded.

We were told this from the new installer, Chris from CAT Fire, who came to pick up where Mist FS left us.

CAT Fire reinstalled the system when we did out downstairs extension. They installed the system but then disappeared without certifying it and have left us in a difficult situation with our building inspectors.

We had someone come to certify the system, which CAT Fire installed. There was a major leak when it was switch on.

The new company said we basically need a complete reinstall including the pump, which is dysfunctional. We only purchased it in late 2017. Apparently, there were some issues with the motherboard and ours has faults. Unfortunately there is no warranty cover for us as the company has changed ownership.

There have been major issues with the PUCK fire equipment which is very concerning when it’s related to home fire safety.

Most catastrophic of all is that the installers are not installing safely. We have has two companies install for us and on both occasions we have been left without a functioning system. We have lost money and complete faith in PUCK fires ability to keep our family safe.

Sold us faulty unsafe system and refuse to fix

Mist Safety UK sold us a Puck misting system that they have no informed us is liable to flooding and could damage our house at any time. Refusing to sort out without us paying over £600 more. Will be making a claim with the courts for a full refund and advise you all do the same.

Avoid this company at all costs, you will lose your money.
