At the RSPCA, we’re proud to be there for every kind— from pets in need to wild animals who need urgent care. Every day, our dedicated teams work tirelessly to protect animals, prevent cruelty, and offer hope in situations that are often distressing and complex. As a charity, we face difficult decisions about how to use our limited resources, and we must prioritise the most urgent and serious cases of abuse or neglect. This sometimes means we can’t attend every call, no matter how much we wish we could. When we’re unable to be there in person, we’ll help in other ways—offering you support, directing you to organisations that can help fast, and, when it’s safe, empowering you to take an animal to a vet. These shared efforts truly make a difference. We’re incredibly grateful for the kindness, patience, and support shown by the public. Together, we can continue to speak up for animals, protect those in need, and build a better world for every kind.

Appalling lack of compassion and support from the RSPCA

My experience trying to help an injured baby deer on the A47 was deeply distressing and traumatic for both the animal and myself.
I found a frightened and limp baby deer by the roadside and immediately tried to do the right thing. After being bounced between 101 and 999 with the police failing to ever show up, I finally reached the RSPCA. Instead of receiving help, the call handler was completely rude and even laughed at me.
Even though I had pulled over with my hazard lights on to shield the deer from passing traffic, she complained that they were an hour away and told me to find a vet on a Sunday. When I pointed out that my job was to report the emergency and that coordinating help was supposed to be theirs, she brushed me off.
She transferred me to a vet who claimed they could not help because it was wildlife, and then asked me to pick up the injured baby deer and bring it in myself. I could not even do that because I had my dog in the car. Her final response was cold and incredibly upsetting. She stated that the deer would just have to stay the way it is and callousley mentioned something about utilising it, which clearly meant putting it down or leaving it to die.
It is heartbreaking that an organisation supposedly dedicated to animal welfare left a suffering animal to its fate while treating a concerned member of the public with utter contempt. I will never donate a single penny to the RSPCA again and I strongly advise everyone else to do the same.

Check local charities - they don't need cameras to work.

I would give them zero if the system would let me.

An organisation with over 152 million in donations each year, with extra from our taxes and a bit more from our taxes via Gift Aid, and they refused to go check on a 6 different reports about 2 people who eventually got prosecuted by the police for animal abuse and cruelty. Only took 3 rabbits, 6 dogs and god knows how many others to starve to death in the house before they bothered themselves, and only because the paper was present.

Two Old English Game Fowl bantams were abandoned, suffering pesticide poisoning and severe malnutrition, and the response was: "oh, we don't deal with abandoned animals". Even if they are severely at risk, and a possible risk to the public. They told me they always tell people to just ring the police for abandoned animals.

I'm sorting it myself, and making a local welfare charity called Cornforth Animal Welfare Society. Someone has to do something, as the RSPCA will not.
They show up when there's a camera, or if they think there's a rare breed or horse they could easily sell on.

I really can’t praise The West Hatch Wildlife Centre enough

I really can’t praise The West Hatch Wildlife Centre enough. They are absolutely worth every penny of the donations they receive, and after my experience last week, I have even more respect and appreciation for the incredible work they do for our local wildlife.

Last week, I called them after coming across a young roe deer that had been hit by a car. He was badly injured, but I genuinely thought he might have a chance of surviving if he could get the help he needed quickly. Within just 20 minutes of my call, three members of staff arrived to help, as I live locally.

From the moment I contacted them, they were kind, caring and reassuring. They handled the situation professionally while also showing genuine compassion for both the deer and for me, as it was an upsetting thing to witness. They carefully transported the deer back to the centre so that he could be assessed and given the best possible chance.

Sadly, despite their efforts, he unfortunately didn’t make it. It was heartbreaking, but I take some comfort in knowing that he was no longer suffering, frightened or lying injured and alone at the roadside. Thanks to the team, he was given care and dignity in his final moments.

Thank you once again to the RSPCA and everyone at West Hatch Wildlife Centre for everything you do for our local wildlife. I know that you cannot save every animal, and I know how incredibly difficult it must be to deal with so many cases while working with limited staff, resources and funding.

Personally, I believe you do everything you possibly can with what you have. The dedication, compassion and commitment of your staff really does make a difference, even when the outcome isn’t always the one we hope for.

Please continue to support this amazing centre if you can. They are there when our wildlife needs help the most, and they deserve every bit of support and recognition they receive.

Thank you to everyone at West Hatch for all that you do. ❤️ 🦌

Hi Anthony,

We're so sorry you felt let down when you called us about the injured pigeon. We understand how distressing it is to see an animal in need. In order to help as many animals as possible we will always ask people to take action to help small sick or injured wild animals themselves if they can by safely transporting them to a vet, rather than waiting for the RSPCA. That’s because it’s the quickest way for thousands of wild animals to get the urgent help they need. Every time a kind member of the public helps a wild animal, it frees up our specialist rescuers to reach animals suffering from cruelty and neglect.

Rude and condescending

Called to ask for some advice about mother and cub foxes that have been living in my garage and appear to have severe mange. Although they ultimately directed me to somewhere I could get help the person I spoke to was extremely rude. They were blunt and made me feel like an idiot for not being able to find the information out for myself. I only contacted the RSPCA after emailing elsewhere and receiving no response but I won’t be contacting them again.

I am absolutely FURIOUS.

I am absolutely FURIOUS.

I reported a cat that had clearly been neglected and abandoned by its owners to the RSPCA because I genuinely believed they would step in and help. I raised concerns and asked them to investigate, yet apparently it wasn’t enough for them to take action.

Now that poor cat has been left vulnerable and has been killed and eaten by foxes.

How is this acceptable? I reported the situation because I was trying to get this animal help. I did my part. The RSPCA had the opportunity to investigate and chose not to.

That poor cat deserved better. It deserved someone to care enough to step in before this happened.

Thanks for absolutely nothing, RSPCA. What was the point of reporting the neglect if nobody was going to do anything about it?

I am heartbroken, angry and disgusted that this could have been prevented. That cat should still be alive.

Their advert says no animal deserves to…

Their advert says no animal deserves to suffer yet when we reported a injured herring gull and another time, a injured fox, they just didn't want to know. In the gulls case, they said gulls nothing to do with them and thix is from a charity that will help geese and swans that people love.
Their adverts are false so breached ths false advertising laws( eg they will leave animals to die in pain and choose which creatures they rescue on a species to species basis, hiding behind the excuse of cost which the adverts don't state!!).
If this doesn't change then the trading standards executive and advertising standards agency should investigate rspca for deliberate false advertising

RSPCA are disinterested if an animal is being treated cruelly.

I tried to call the Oxfordshire branch as a dog, on a daily basis, has been put in a garden in this extreme heat. Listening to it cry every day through the summer, crying until its cry becomes quieter is hard to listen to. 1st call was terminated as they ignore crying dogs so I called again. The person answering really wasn’t interested. He was obsessed about the post code. I gave everything, my details and the name of the street and house number, but he just wasn’t bothered. I wonder just how many people have called about that poor animal. Amber heat warning and it’s left in the garden. Crying. For hours. I’m disgusted and disappointed with RSPCA . 32 degrees in the shade in my garden! That poor dog.

Thank you for sharing your concerns about the dog you’re worried about. We appreciate how concerning it can be during these high temperatures.

In cases like this, we sometimes face limitations with the current legal framework. Whilst we may not agree with it, It is not currently against the law to keep a dog outside and therefore we can not always take action.

RSPCA Should Be Ashamed

RSPCA are a disgrace. It's perfectly acceptable to leave three Parrots in a confined space. Unable to flap their wings. No stimuli. No perch. Depression does not affect birds apparently. They have to be visually sick / unwell. RSPCA you should be ashamed of yourself. It's not an excuse that you are charity and receive no government funding.

Hi David,

Thank you for your feedback regarding our telephone systems. We understand how frustrating it is to have difficulty speaking to a person, especially when you are trying to reach us for help.

We are unclear from your review if you were trying to contact us outside of our opening hours. We receive around a million calls and a quarter of a million online reports of animal welfare concern yearly, but we have less than 330 officers covering England and Wales.

As a charity with limited resources it has been necessary to focus our efforts on the busiest period so that we can help, save and rescue many more animals.

During the hours our call centre is closed, our automated service is designed to direct people to refer to our website for helpful advice or suggesting other organisations that may be able to offer assistance. You can find information about how to help a seal you are worried about here: https://www.rspca.org.uk/adviceandwelfare/wildlife/seals/help

Hello Catherine

Thanks for your feedback giving us the opportunity to explain.

We receive around a million calls and a quarter of a million online reports of animal welfare concern yearly, but we have less than 330 officers covering England and Wales.

We’ve found the number of reports needing our attention in the night is very small, so to maximise our resources during the day, we made the decision to focus on opening during those hours.

Although some incidents occur at night, they’re very few. So by concentrating our efforts on the busiest period, we can help, save and rescue many more animals.

During the hours our call centre is closed, recorded messages provide helpful advice, e.g. referring people to the RSPCA website for information or suggesting they contact a local vet for assistance.

We’re doing our very best to reach as many animals as we possibly can, as quickly as we can.

Appailing

I had an ongoing case with one of my neighbours who hoarded multiple cats and dogs and neglected and abused the animals, 2 cats mysteriously died. Onone occassion two cats were left in the flat without food or water. This is when I contacted RSPCA, they came out, helped me feed the cats through a window crack. And for the week I fed them and gave them water. It was during a heatvwave and bank holiday weekend. They would have died after 2 days without my care. The housing association gained access to the property and was shocked by the damage; the animals were all relieving themselves inside the flat and on the balcony. Even the curtains were soaked with it. The whole flat was carpeted, so you can imagine the smell! When the couple returned 8 days later, i got the call that oh well, the owners are back so we gonna close the case. I was shocked and pushed not to close it and provided more evidence including them kicking the dogs multiple times, a starving cat desperately trying to eat a rotten egg on the balcony. RSPCA came and I received an update again, stating the animals are okay.
To this day, the cats are trying to gain access to my balcony as they're locked on theirs for hours in this heatwave! NO WATER OR FOOD FOR THEM THERE! And my balcony is surrounded with a chew proof net, bird spikes and plastic chicken wire as my cat is FIV+ and can't be in contact with them. Yet, they're still injuring themselves to squeeze through caps, but I managed to fill in all of it so at this point they are just cutting themselves and hurting their paws. How desperate one animal could be? But yeah, the pets are okssy...
They also took in a kitten that's also been locked out often, the other morning the kitten was uncontrollably shaking and crying and her eyes were gunky. I promised myself I am not feeding them anymore and also don't care, but 2-3 weeks ago both dogs were locked on the balcony for hours in the heatwave, on the afternoon. It was over 30C, imagine the stone flooring there? After about an hour or so someone called the police on them, who told them to let the animals inside or make them comfortable.
Today I watched one of the cats desperately crying on the balcony for over 4 hours, so watched my camera back and indeed she was locked outside the whole night. Contacted RSPCA who told me the case was closed and they educated the owners. YOU CANNOT EDUCATE CRUELTY OUT OF PEOPLE!!!!!!!! Also was told if the mess and noise bothering me, contact environmental health department. LIKE IDGAF ABOUT THE MESS OR NOISE, I CARE ABOUT THE ANIMALS SO SHOULD YOU! No more donations to RSPCA!

Hi DLite

Thank you for your review. We are truly grateful for the compassion and dedication you have shown to these animals and we are sorry that you felt let down after you called us to report your concerns. We understand how upsetting and frustrating it can be when you report something you’re worried about and feel that nothing is then done.

We’re always looking to improve how we work and we value feedback, even when it’s difficult to hear. If you would like us to review how the case was handled please provide us with further information via our complaints form:

With best wishes
Sarah
