For the particular rose, Gertrude Jekyll, I had to buy from DA they seem to have 'rights' to it. I had recently bought 10 or more roses on sale at Peter Beales, potted plants, of my choice, they were magnificent plants, strong, healthy, substantial even plenty of buds that are still coming out - the DA 'premium potted rose' was a complete disappointment, full price, cut right back, not a leaf on it, may as well have been bare root, the stems were so thin. Hopefully will be fine next year but no where near the quality, or age of the Peter Beales roses that we had delivered the week before that cost 30% less.

I’m sorry to hear that you were disappointed with the appearance of your ‘Gertrude Jekyll’, particularly when comparing it with roses you had recently received elsewhere.
I completely appreciate that a rose arriving with foliage and buds can initially look more impressive than one that has been cut back. However, different nurseries will have their own processes when it comes to growing, pruning and preparing roses for despatch. This is the process we have always followed with our roses at this time of year, and it is one that works very well for us.
As our roses begin to enter their dormant stage, we take the opportunity to cut them back. Some roses reach this stage earlier than others, so their appearance can vary when they arrive. Pruning at this point allows the rose to focus its energy on establishing and strengthening its roots rather than maintaining top growth as we head into the colder months.
Although I appreciate that your rose may look similar to a bare root rose above ground, there is an important difference beneath the surface. You have received a healthy potted plant with an established root system, ready to be planted and continue developing. The lack of leaves or buds at this stage is not an indication of the health or quality of the rose, but simply reflects its stage in the natural seasonal cycle.
I also can’t see that you contacted us regarding your concerns prior to leaving this review. Had you done so, we would have been more than happy to discuss the condition of your rose with you, provide reassurance and answer any questions you had. Of course, we are still very happy to do so should you wish to get in touch.
I do understand your disappointment when comparing the immediate appearance of the plants, but I hope this provides some reassurance as to why we prepare our roses in this way. I hope that once your ‘Gertrude Jekyll’ has had the opportunity to establish, you’ll enjoy watching it produce plenty of healthy new growth and beautiful blooms next season.

Excellent service from the DA office
Very pleased with the service from David Austin. I ordered 3 Olivia Rose Austin shrub roses. Two arrived, but the third was a Lady Gardener rose. When I rang the DA office and sent them a photo of the Lady Gardener rose, the person I spoke to immediately apologised for the mistake and arranged to send me a replacement Olivia Rose Austin, which arrived safely the following week.
I have ordered a number of these roses in the past, and they bloom prolifically over many months. This year, despite the drought they have done very well indeed.

I had a potted rose delivered by post
I had a potted rose delivered by post. It arrived well packaged and wrapped in recycled cardboard and recyclable plastic bag to stop the soil from escaping during transit. It was packaged with care and has now been planted using the useful leaflet on how to plant and care for a rose. I love David Austin Roses. I have quite a collection now. This one is Strawberry Hill which is a climber, with a lovely fragrance and it will fit the space where it is planted as it matures.

Disappointing
I have ordered david austin roses from david austin previously ...and these have been consistently first class. They absolutely live up to their reputation.
My most recent purchase was a gift for my sister and we were disapointed when it arrived with no leaves/ blooms.
Customer services were responsive and got back quicky ... based on a photo of the rose .
They confirmed the time of year meant this was just how it is ...and it was perfectly healthy.
I therefore ordered another david austin rose for my sister from Burford garden centre ( same price) and in contrast it arrived with blooms and buds and we were v pleased with how it looked on arrival.
I wouldn't use david austin again based on this disappointing experience

At this time of year, we begin cutting our roses back at different stages as they naturally start to enter dormancy. Some roses will enter this stage and begin dropping their leaves earlier than others, and we take this opportunity to prune them back. This allows the plant to focus its energy on developing a strong root system, helping to produce a healthier and stronger rose overall.
I completely appreciate why, when comparing the two roses, the one with blooms and buds may have looked more impressive on arrival. However, the difference in appearance doesn’t mean that one rose is healthier than the other. Roses can be at quite different stages at this point in the season, depending on the individual plant and variety.
I’m pleased to hear that my colleagues were able to review your photograph and respond promptly, and that they were able to reassure you that the rose you received was healthy. I am sorry, however, that its appearance left you feeling disappointed enough not to order from us again, especially after your previous positive experiences with our roses.
Should your sister decide to plant the original rose, I hope she’ll enjoy watching it establish and put on beautiful fresh growth when the new season arrives.

Good quality roses and smooth ordering process
Ordering process was smooth and straightforward. Both roses ordered were gifts, and the recipients were pleased with the quality and appearance of the rose bushes on arrival. Far better quality than the roses remaining on display at my local garden centre. Packaging was roomy and the roses were safely transported and protected ahead of delivery. DPD offered amendments to delivery instructions if needed nearer to the delivery time, and in one case the 1 hour delivery slot was available to me duirng tracking (not long ahead of delivery) although the other was not. This made it easier for me to advise that recipient ahead of time. (Text or email updates would have been helpful, though, rather than repeatedly having to track online). Delivery was fast, and meant the roses did not dry out.
I would recommend David Austin roses and will use them in future.

golden anniversary rose
I bought a golden anniversary rose for my sister and her husband, I paid extra for it to be ready to pot, I didn't expect it to be in bloom in September but was disappointed that it didn't even have any leaves, it just looked like a twig in a box. Another friend also bought the same rose from you and that was covered in leaves so looked a lot healthier. I guess I was just unlucky, hopefully it will pick up once it is planted!

The five year guarantee on their roses really works!
There was immediate acceptance to replace my dying rose under their 5 year guarantee (which I hadn't known about) and the replacement arrived within a few days.

Speedy delivery
Speedy delivery, I ordered three potted roses these all arrived together in good condition, one was in flower with plenty of buds, it’s been planted for about three weeks now and smells totally divine. My other roses remain as leafless twigs but will be flowering and smelling amazing next year. then I ordered one more. This one arrived in its box which was totally squashed on one side, the whole length of the box was damaged so was concerned when I opened it but all was well. This one Gertrude Jeykell was another leafless twig so that possibly saved it from a nasty crush. It’s now planted and again I am already looking forward to seeing this one in full flower I already have two in my back garden so this in the front will surround us with colour and fragrance. Love them, love David Austin roses excellent quality.

Speedy delivery.. Was disappointed that potted rose arrived clipped to bare stalks as it was a gift and this wasnt made clear. I had ordered a potted rose two days prior from a different supplier and it arrived in full bloom so I anticipated the same. This needs to be made clear.
