I am in the security business and have…
I am in the security business and have been working with cameras and NVRs for over 20 years. I have used everything from Axis to Avigilon to Hikvision to ADI's in house WBox brand. About a year ago, I made the mistake of testing a Night Owl system. It is such trash. If the NVR fails, all the cameras are worthless; they only work with 2 NVR models, and if they are EOL (a month after your purchase), you are out of luck. Anyway, I set this trash up, and it worked somewhat at my Aunt's house for a little under a year, then the NVR kept beeping and rebooting. Since all the cameras only work with this one NVR, I found one on eBay and purchased it. Pretty much any device you can factory reset or call tech support or something. So I bought this device, and the guy who sold it to me didn't know the password. Night Owl's product support team is horrendous. You would be better off asking some random person for help. They sent me to their reset tool which doesn't work at all. So now I'm stuck with two brick NVRs and eight cameras that don't work with anything. Stay away from this company. They are a complete joke. Products don't last, are entirely proprietary, and product support is basically a mentally challenged person sitting in a basement. I don't even care about the cost! I care that I have to install 8 cameras again a year after I did it!
Stay way away from any NightOwl Security Camera System
Stay way away from KnightOwl Home Security System take it from a person who bought a Sixteen camera system everything is working on the DVR and Cameras but there App NightOwl PROTECT doesn't give you any chance to see what is going on at your home when you are away from home it sucks and the customer service sucks also because they blame everything else but there selfs for the NightOwl PROTECT app not working on your phone with 4G or 5G as promised. I wouldn't have gave them a one star but had to so I can Warn others to stay way away from these Clowns I would give them a negative 100 for all there lies and suckyness on the tech phone calls I have called for help with the app to work correctly and I have pictures to prove everything I am saying about this company NightOwl.
Horrible tech support
Horrible tech support. No one speaks fluent English called three different times asking for a supervisor. Tech support has no knowledge of the product. I’ve had the product for about 5 months and suddenly I can’t access the cameras from my mobile device. Moral of the story a week later still can’t speak with a supervisor nor access cameras from my mobile device (iPhone). Spoke with 3 guys and a female ALL VERY RUDE. Do not waste your money on this product. You get what you pay for. I’d rather spend a fortune on a better product with better tech support that actually have knowledge of the product.
BUYER BEWARE!!!
My Night Owl DVR crapped out after 5 years. When I called them to purchase another one, they informed me the new ones were not compatible with my sixteen 5MP cameras, which was not true. I trusted them and bought a new complete 20 camera system (with new cameras) for $1200 (after their "generous" $200 discount for being a current customer)! The new DVR arrived today with hundreds of feet of all new wiring and connectors I did not need. When I hooked it up to the OLD cameras and wiring, everything worked! The sales department took advantage of one of their customers just to make a sale! I could have bought just the DVR and while my system wouldn't have all the bells and whistles the new system has (voice, siren, etc) the fact is my cameras and wiring worked fine with the new DVR! After deciding to keep the slightly higher resolution cameras, I hooked all the new equipment up and found one of the 16 new cameras gave a bad picture. When I went through Customer Service to get an RMA, I was given the third degree and asked all sorts of questions which I had already answered in my original RMA request. To add injury to insult they wanted me to reconnect the bad camera (that I had already packed to send back) and take a picture of the bad picture it was getting to show them that what I said was true! When I insisted on speaking to a Supervisor I was eventually disconnected. HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SUPPORT!!! I've now spent another $1200 with the company that I did not need to spend and can't even get what I paid for! NEVER AGAIN!! BUYER BEWARE! One star only because I can't give them ZERO!!!
I would not recommend buying from night…
I would not recommend buying from night owl! I like to shop in the USA for my products, but it’s companies like night owl that make me second guess! I bought these cameras and regretted it, the app is terrible and does not work, trying to contact these people is non existent! They hire a company to do their trouble shooting and can’t understand any of them! I returned the product and asked about my refund, and was ignored. I had to file a claim with my bank in order to even receive my money back. I can’t stress this enough, DO NOT BUY FROM NIGHT OWL!
Please do not waste your money
Please do not waste your money. I purchased this brand of camera and within 6 months, one camera died, it's been 2 years and 6 months and guess what all the cameras are dead. So basically I've lost all my cameras. I will not recommend this product to anyone
DO NOT BUY FROM THIS COMPANY!!
DO NOT BUY FROM THIS COMPANY!!! If you do, in order for them to warrant their product, you must buy the cameras/product from their website, or the handful of stores they list. If you buy from a store that is not listed in their website, the will not honor their product! This company has the absolute worse customer service I have ever dealt with. We have one of three cameras that continually sees a pixel change. It continues to record over and over. I contacted this company for help, they strung me along for 65 days until finally getting an answer from them. They won’t help me because I purchased the cameras off of Newegg.com. Newegg.com won’t accept my return now because it’s past their 30-day return policy. I’m stuck with a defective camera, and I’m extremely irked!!!! This company sucks! (I even contacted the BBB, and this company still doesn’t want to help). It’s one dang camera, ONE!! I just want it replaced! They must know they have defective product and let ‘other’ companies sell the product, so they don’t have to honor any type of warranty.
Love camaras
really bad products and the worse customer service ever
Guys, don't buy that! If you think the camera is bad just wait to see the customer service. I spend 800 dollars in 6 cameras wireless and they don't work properly in top of It I wrote to support and was worse..
CONS outweigh PROS
We have had our security system for about 1.5 years. We have two other brands as well. The Night Owl is the worst of the 3, thus having to purchase a primary and use this as our 2nd and 3rd backup. I will start with the pros
PROS:
-There is an app for your phone.
-There is continuous surveillance from your computer.
-It has great daytime feed for close range, and you can zoom in from your phone.
-When wet or humid, it still has reliable footage/feed.
No weird light reflection causing distorted round lights in the camera's viewfinder.
-It has good sounds regarding animals noises, such as owls, coyotes, birds, and people talking.
-Night Owl is good at picking up anomalies or weird unexplainable things. Yet someone could debunk most because it does distort and glitch. However, many cannot be debunked.
CONS:
- The system itself is buggy. It glitches or won't allow looking at specific footage and must unplug and reboot more often than not. It's been worse after updating.
- The system will say a human or face detected, yet you see nothing. We found, after testing it ourselves, that it is likely due to lagging upon recording. It picks up something but starts recording after it is gone.
- It will continuously say a face is detected even If it’s not. For example If you have a pot, wood, birdbath, ball, or any object in its view, it will say face detected until it is moved. Yet, motion detection mode will pick up humans or animals at night better than human or face detection mode. It will say a face detected every night when my car is parked.
-The system is awful at night.
- If someone moves quickly, it will not detect at all, or if detected you will see nothing. Again, due to the actual recording time of the event. Unless the person moves slowly, is in the camera's full viewing range one side to the other, or standing still, you may get a 5 Mil. Sec. shot before moving off camera or nothing. This is the most frustrating thing of all!
- The night vision is very fuzzy, especially in summer when there are bugs. Anytime a bug goes across the camera, which is constant in summer, it blurs or distorts the camera's view and frames for about 3-5 Sec. This may seem like a short time, but when a flying creature or a spider is near, good luck on focusing clearly at night.
- It doesn’t allow you to have the continuous view set on your phone, which would be okay if it captured the actual event in which a human or animal is detected. However, you must be home and be able to go to the computer and look up the continuous feed to find what was there, if anything at all.
-The system doesn’t allow you to zoom on the computer when going to timestamped footage, which sucks when it’s something further away or at night.
-If you set your phone to alert for motion, which happens to be the most reliable for capturing humans or animals, you will be alerted 24/7, every 1-5 min, and 30-160 seconds long. This can be due to the wind blowing leaves, and branches, the sun and moon movements, and the shadows created by trees, structures, objects, and other light sources.
-Horrible noise feedback when listening to leaves crunching, cars, sprinkler etc. It is painful to hear.
-When humans are detected, if the person is there longer than a min or two, it will stop recording. You can adjust settings. However, it doesn’t make a difference. So again, you would have to go back to look at the continuous feed & find the timestap to review footage.
Bottom Line: They may work for someone needing additional backup cams, who don’t want to spend a lot of money on a security system, only needing daytime surveillance, someone in a city, (However, it doesn’t support 5G or make a difference if you have a 5G network.) wants a cheap night vision video surveillance for short ranges, or only needing to see someone moving across the view of the camera. For example, a high wall or wooden fence 2-5 feet away from home, to view anything moving from one side of the camera’s view/range to the other side.
For anyone looking for practical use for surveillance, this is not an option. I feel just as safe or unsafe as I did before having them. In fact they frustrate me and give me more anxiety then when not having them for the reasons listed above. Point: What you pay for is what you get. These were less expensive and said to work as good as some of the higher end brands of other camera systems, this was false. I will be doing reviews on all the camera we tried with real life examples on YouTube in the near future, so look for me in the next few weeks.
Started off loving it, TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SUPPORT
Started off loving it. Setup was fairly easy. Cameras worked great (still wish I’d got 4K). Everything was great. Then for some odd reason my app that controls liveview didn’t dhow my recorder. I tried to re-add it to the loading screen and it wouldn’t let me. Every time I’d try it would say reset at the NVR. I had never done anything besides setup and the online instructions suck and didn’t have a section for my issue. So I called support, BIG MISTAKE. First woman I got could barely speak English. She was rude as hell, and literally didn’t even come close to the answers that she should have been giving, obviously because of her lack of English skills. She walked me through some of the beginning and then I had to just figure out the rest. She added two cameras and said she would help me get the 3rd later. We had been disconnected once and she called back. Said she would call back again if it happened, once I figured the rest out and needed help with the 3rd camera she he magically got cut off and didn’t call back. It sounded like she was working remotely from home. Lots of ppl talking in the background, snd every time I asked a question she would take at least 15 seconds to answer if she answered at all. So I called back, got a guy WHO COULD BARELY SPEAK ENGLISH. This dude literally KNEW NOTHING. Every time I tried to reset the camera it wouldn’t work. Finally did on probably the 10th time, I wasn’t keeping count. I asked him question after question with him not answering a single one. Same thing as before, 15-20 seconds to answer if I got one at all. After 15 minutes I started recording him because I wanted ppl to hear how utterly ridiculous it was. I asked him if they were working remotely (I asked the girl, no answer, but same thing of ppl talking loudly in the background) and he said, no, in the office at Florida. IT WAS THE WORST CUSTOMER SUPPORT I HAVE EVER TALKED TO. And if I have to go through the whole process every time the power goes out then I’m taking it back.
