Great Customer Support

I've been shopping here for a while now as the products are great and the delivery quick and reliable. Unfortunately last time an incorrect item was sent to me. I was concerned as it was an expensive item and very bulky and thought it was going to be a real inconvenience to send it back. However, I called customer services and they were brilliant. They arranged collection of the wrong item and issued the correct one straight away. I'll definitely continue to shop here having the confidence that if on the rare occasion anything does go wrong, it'll be put right immediately.

What's not to like!

Site is easy to use and the goods arrive very quickly and are well and sustainably packed. I mostly buy groceries and its great to know that they are ethically produced.

Damaged packaging & contents

The products are ok, but nearly every order I receive has damaged packaging causing the contents to get damaged. This has been going on for a couple of years. I can't believe this is still happening. The review suggest a lot of customers are having the same problem

Simply avoid if you don’t want a hussle

Used to be decent retailer but went down the hill. Slow and oroblematic customer service. I have moved away after my three gricery deliveries were damaged and missing (damaged boxes and items in the boxes broken, due to poor packaging - e.g. Glass jars losely thrown in. It took a while and a lot of hussle to claim refund.
Recently I have ordered some organic bamboo clothing. I am size 8/10 but some of items were far too small. I have sent it back and got refund for items but not even penny for postahe that I have paid £8! They ckaim the items were not as expected so it is not a valid reason to refund postage costs. I am leaving Ethical for good and moving to sellers who offer free returns. Bye

Hi, I'm so sorry for the problems you have had with your order. I had been looking at your order this morning and had asked the contact centre to get in touch to resolve this for you and sort the postage, they may have emailed already or tried to call.
Unfortunately we cannot offer free returns like some fashion only retailers do as we also sell groceries, cleaning and household items etc so by offering a freepost address we could not ensure only clothing items are sent to this.
I will be speaking with the content team to look at the description and sixing information on the item and will also contact the manufacturer to provide us with further sizing information.
Once again sorry for how this order has gone, if you check your email you should already have a response from our customer service team. I hope you will remain a customer with us after shopping with us for such a long time.

Poor packaging, brilliant product

The product is brilliant. However, when I opened the well packed secure outer box the inner box had burst open. When I opened the inner box and lifted out the PLASTIC bag containing the washing powder, the bottom of the bag burst and £50 of washing powder was dumped on the floor. Needless to say I wasn't a happy chappie!

Hi Elaine, so sorry about this, if you would like to get in contact with our customer services we can arrange for a replacement if the item was damaged.
We face a real challenge with packaging, we don't use any plastic in our packing (although we may reuse suppler case packaging, i.e. if you order a case of 6 and this came from the manufacturer to us in packaging containing plastic, we will not break it out of the case packing).
We have spent a lot of time testing and researching packaging to provide the most protective packaging we can whilst keeping the footprint as low as possible.
We will pass the feedback on the product packaging back to the supplier.

Love ethical superstore

Love ethical superstore, never had any problems with the store itself, but I only gave 4 stars instead of 5 as I wish they'd use a different delivery company, Hermes/Evri are terrible.

Hi, Iona, thank you for taking time to leave a review and thank you for your kind words, I'm glad you are happy with the service we provide!
On the delivery options, Evri is our main provider but if you select Express Delivery it will switch to DPD. We are aware of issues with delivery providers and it is something we are concerned about. Unfortunately most of the national providers have similar models with drivers working as self-employed which brings challenges around worker rights, holidays, sick pay etc so it is not a straightforward choice. As far as I aware Royal Mail is the only ones who don’t do this, however Royal Mail would not viable due to size and weight restrictions on packages which would not work with the volume and variation of orders we have. With over 6000 products on our site which customers can order in any quantity or combination, we would not be able to ensure orders fall within the size and weight requirements to make it work.

This is however something we are very monitoring closely and will be keeping our options open with regards to the carrier market.

Unreliable tags. Awful customer services. Questionable integrity.

I have bought the Sukin deodorant several times in the belief it is palm oil free because Ethical Superstore tag it as such.
However, looking at the ingredients I recently noticed Sukin deodorant contains gelatin which is often made from palm oil.
I contacted Sukin requesting to know from what their gelatin is made. Despite promising to check with their suppliers, three months and several messages later, they have provided NO information about the gelatin used.
At this point I decided to contact Ethical Superstore since they are the company that tag this product as palm oil free.
On their website they state: We know many of you like to avoid products that use palm oil in production, and in order to help you make those feel good choices we have identified all the products we sell which do not contain any palm oil. You will also find those that use sustainable palm oil here.
So I'm thinking, if they check their products they should be able to verify whether or not Sukin deodorant is palm oil free.
Although Ethical Superstore did indeed contact Sukin, it was via Sukin's online webform. Unfortunately, despite the careful wording of my enquiry, i.e. that the issue is with the gelatin since it can be made from palm oil and Sukin don't specify what it is made from on their product labels, Ethical Superstore simply asked if the deodorant contained palm oil. Consequently, Ethical Superstore got exactly the same answer as I did when I contacted Sukin:
'Thank you for getting in touch.
I have had a look into the ingredients for you and can see there is no palm oil in this item,
If there is anything else that we can do, then please do not hesitate to get in touch and a member of our team will be happy to help.

Sukin Customer Service Team'

When I pointed out to Ethical Superstore that I needed to know what the gelatin is made from they replied:
As we are only the supplier of the item I would advise you to contact Sukin directly about their products so there is no miscommunication as this looks like what has happened previously.
Since Ethical Superstore tag this very product as palm oil free, I would suggest it is THEIR RESPONSIBILITY to verify that the information they give consumers is correct.
To add insult to injury, I wrote a review for the Sukin deodorant on their website which they did not publish.

I think it is incumbent on companies which try to sell products using ethical tags to push those products as acceptable to actually ensure the tags they apply to products are verified.
In this case the tag has not been verified.
When asked to verify this tag Ethical Superstore reneged on their responsibility to check out the validity of the tag.
This brings into question exactly how ethical Ethical Superstore really is, and whether or not their other tags can be trusted.
UPDATE 25/05/22
* Despite saying in their reply to me that they have contacted Sukin and have been informed the product does not contain Palm Oil, when I requested the evidence all Ethical Superstore supplied was a screenshot of the Sukin webpage linked to their policy on palm oil which states quite clearly that Sukin do use ingredients made from palm oil. Also, I notice Ethical Superstore have now removed the 'Palm Oil Free' tag from these products and replaced it with a 'Sustainable Palm Oil' tag.
Since sustainable palm oil is, imo, an unethical product I will not be purchasing this product.
** Ethical Superstore also stated they do not publish reviews from people who have not purchased the product from their website.
I had purchased the product from their website using a different email address but the same payment method. They should have more trust in their customers. I don't like the way they have treated me, so will not be purchasing from this website (or their sister site, Natural Collection which I have been a customer of for over a decade) again.

Before listing we ask all suppliers a series of questions one of which being, if products have palm oil in them. We have the Sukin deodorant listed as palm oil free as we were informed this was the case when listing it.
Once it was brought to our attention from your enquiry we contacted Sukin to ask if the glycerin in the product was derived from palm oil, we have been informed by Sukin that is it not so we have kept the palm oil free tag on the product. Glycerin can be derived from sources other than palm oil.
As for the product review for the deodorant you left on our website, we could not display this as we only display reviews for products which the customer has purchased from us. As you had not purchased the product from us we could not list the review.

Huge box for small items!

My only complaint was the size of the box my 3 small items were posted in - they could easily have been posted in a box 1/5th of the size. A bit disappointing for an "ethical" superstore.

Sorry we have sent a large box for your order, I have had a look into the order and see it is indeed three small items so should only need a small box. We take our packaging very seriously and have done a considerable amount of research in how to package items in the most eco-friendly way possible whilst protecting the products we send out. We do not use any plastic packaging with our orders and have several innovative alternatives to this. We also reuse packaging and boxes from suppliers where appropriate to get more use out of these and prevent further packaging being used.
We have over 7000 different products covering a range of categories so packaging can be difficult as an order could contain anything from jewellery to 5L laundry liquid. Because of this we have a range of box sizes and mailing bags so we can find the most appropriate box/mailing bag size. In our warehouse we have 9 different box sizes to try an cover every eventuality. We give extensive training to our packers to cope with the various products and combinations they will come across, keeping these products safe whilst at the same time not overpackaging.
Sometimes, especially with current shortages for packaging materials we can be out of stock of one size of box so we will have to ship it in a larger box to ensure the order goes out in a timely manner. I suspect this is what has happened in this case, but I will be able to look into the order and find out if anything could have been done better.
Once again sorry for the excessive box you have been given in this order, I can assure you we do try to find the most appropriate packaging for all orders and I hope this has not put you off ordering with us and I hope you enjoyed your Ethical Superstore products!

2 x Non delivery and no refund.

An order of 6 cleaning products was placed in March. I was informed the parcel was damaged in delivery. 3 emails later they redespatched the order which again was apparently damaged in transit! Several emails later and a promise of a refund which was never received. I've now obtained a refund from PayPal.

We received a notification from EVRi that the order was damaged in transit so we got in contact to offer a refund or replacement but I see you had already contacted them. It is best only contacting the delivery company if the order is still out for delivery, in the case of damaged in transit problems it is best to contact us directly as the courier will not be able to rearrange a second order to be sent.

Unfortunately the replacement order was sent on next day delivery through DPD this time and was again damaged. We are really sorry for this, it is unusual and unfortunate to have an order damaged twice so we processed a refund as soon as we had contacted you to see if you wanted re replacement or refund.
Refunds can take a couple of days to come through once we have processed them.
Once again sorry for the problems with your order and I hope this poor experience has not put you off shopping with us in the future.
