Misleading Student Pass billing – Charged $49 just to message tutors, refund denied despite no lessons

I was looking for a math tutor for my grade 9 son (an English language learner in the Burnaby area) and tried Superprof after seeing their ads.
When I tried to message a couple of tutors, the platform prompted me to add a payment method to “send the request,” with wording that strongly implied I would only be charged if I actually hired or booked lessons with a tutor. I added my payment details and sent initial inquiries.
Shortly after, two tutors accepted the request and shared contact details. Superprof immediately charged me the $49 Student Pass fee. I realized right away that this was not what the prompts suggested and requested a full refund on March 9 and March 11 — before any tutoring occurred and with no lessons ever booked or delivered.
Superprof refused the refund, claiming that tutor acceptance alone “fulfilled” the service. Their support repeatedly denied my requests, offered only a 30-day extension I didn’t want, and eventually declared the matter closed. I received no actual tutoring value whatsoever.
This billing practice feels deceptive. The “only charged if a tutor accepts” wording misleads many users into thinking charges are tied to hiring, not mere contact. I’ve since seen dozens of similar complaints on Trustpilot, Reddit, and elsewhere from Canadian users facing the exact same unexpected $49 charge and refund runaround.
I had to escalate to my credit card issuer for a provisional refund and am now filing with the Better Business Bureau and Consumer Protection BC.
Warning to other parents: Be extremely careful. You can find tutors directly on Kijiji, university bulletin boards (UBC/SFU students), or through local services like Mathnasium without this upfront subscription trap. Superprof is not worth the hassle if you’re just exploring options.

I had a scheduled Zoom appointment but…

I had a scheduled Zoom appointment but was not provided with a meeting link or clear instructions in advance. I waited approximately 10 minutes before disconnecting. The provider later indicated they were on Zoom but could not find me, suggesting a lack of coordination on their end.

This experience felt disorganized and unprofessional, especially given that appointments require clients to set aside time in their workday. Clear communication and proper scheduling procedures would help prevent this issue in the future.

“Listen to the 1 star reviews.

Like several other reviewers, it was unclear when signing up for the service that the $49 was going to be charged upon signing up to send a message.

When it says the charge will come out once a teacher “accepts” your request, there is no information on that page saying what that means. And because the hourly fee for the voice teacher I contacted was also $49, I thought that was just going to come out when I booked a lesson. The legal terms don’t show up until AFTER you’ve put in your payment details, in an email.

I ultimately decided the teacher wasn’t a fit, so now I’m out $49 to just send a single message.

Superprof: You have several reviews describing the same scenario; there is an obvious lack of transparency and clarity in your sign-up process, and despite saying in your replies that you will “investigate” to prevent the issue from reoccurring, you clearly have done nothing about it. You seem to be banking on the fact that people won’t understand what your service is so you can make more money. Super shady.

I DO NOT recommend this service. I’ve emailed to request a refund. We’ll see if they do the right thing.

A subscription trap

Superprof is less of an educational platform and more of a subscription trap designed to catch busy students off guard.

I signed up for one month to message a specific tutor. They then buried the 'auto-renewal' terms in a welcome email and—here is the kicker—sent a renewal notice only one day before the charge. This isn't 'customer service'; it’s a calculated tactic to ensure you don’t have enough time to cancel before they take your money.

When I contacted their support (specifically regarding the lack of notice), they gave a robotic, scripted response essentially saying, 'We got your money, too bad.' They have zero interest in customer satisfaction or fair business practices—they just want the subscription fee for a service I haven't even used since the renewal.

To anyone considering this site: Save your money. There are plenty of other platforms that don't rely on cheap, 'dark pattern' billing tactics to make a profit. I’ve already initiated a chargeback with my bank and will never use this platform again. Absolute bottom-tier ethics.

Not trustworthy at all. Avoid!

Tried to find someone to give lessons to my daughter. Contacted two people. One increased their advertised rate 25%+ and the other changed the lesson to online despite offering in person lessons. Despite these key changes Superprof customer service claimed they had accepted my offer so I was charged. Had to go to my credit card company who sided with me and gave me my money back.

Zero Credibility – Total Lack of Transparency and Accountability

I am beyond disappointed with my experience on Superprof. It is shocking that a platform of this scale is unable—or simply unwilling—to validate a clear version of events during a dispute.

It is not the user's responsibility to fix your internal failures. By choosing to ignore my side of the story, you have proven that you do not care about the integrity of your reviews or the safety of your community. Your platform suffers from a massive lack of credibility and a complete absence of transparency in how you handle conflicts.

If Superprof cannot act as a serious, impartial mediator, then it has no business operating in the tutoring industry. Potential students and tutors deserve to know that if something goes wrong, this platform will leave them stranded without a second thought

**** UPDATE (March 2026):
Following my initial complaint, Superprof's customer service reached out and finally resolved the situation. While the initial experience was frustrating and lacked transparency, I appreciate that they eventually took accountability and fixed the issue. I am updating my rating to reflect this resolution.
