Dishonest company
Dishonest company, so many poor reviews of being ripped off, wish I had searched first. The website clearly states you will only be charged the $59 student pass fee if a tutor accepts your request, i checked my bank and got charged immediately and when i eventually got a reply from a tutor about 6 hours later they were unable to help anyway, asked for a refund but no luck. Avoid!!

It's worth pointing out that as a parent or guardian and owner of the credit card, it's your responsibility to monitor how it is used.
You have the authority and oversight to ensure that your credit card is used appropriately and that all transactions align with your intentions and consent.
While we do our best to provide a secure and transparent platform our website is intended for adults therefore it is essential that all activity is closely monitored by a parent or guardian.
It looks like you were not offered a refund because you successfully connected with a science tutor and took at least one lesson with the teacher.

SCAM! Avoid at all cost !
Firstly they claim to only charge your card once a lesson is accepted by a tutor when in fact you are charged immediately once a tutor responds to your request, regardless of whether a lesson is accepted.
Secondly the fee being charged is only for access to tutors which is completely separate and above the cost of any tutoring fees. This is deliberately vague in the signup process.

Superprof business model is flawed
The Superprof business model is obviously flawed (see other reviews that support this), and feels deliberately duplicitous. A subscription model is suited to services on an ongoing basis, not mostly one-off searches/transactions. A $59 fee for connection to tutors seems reasonable, but to only allow this as a monthly payment feels like a business relying on their customers' complacency (and/or forgetfulness) to keep making money that isn't being earned.
How common is it really to be constantly on the look out for a new tutor? Really?
In our case, we ended up paying $295 for connection to one tutor. You can of course put that on me (Superprof certainly did in their response), and I accept that. After all, they do let you know that you can cancel any time, and I didn't. But I doubt I'm the only wondering what proportion of SP's revenue is coming by way of inactive members.
Superprof's customer service team have a lengthy reply to concerns about this matter ready to copy and paste – they're not liable to refund unearned fees. But my review here relates not to whether they can technically get away with it, it's whether they should.

Pretty corrupt! Don't use!
The model is pretty corrupt. You pay as soon as a tutor 'accepts' your request, even if they subsequently (later the same day) decline it and for reasons that indicate they misadvertised themselves - that is advertise they will tutor one to one in a 40km radius and then tell you after they 'accept' that they will only tutor online. Try another route for finding a tutor. This is such a scam.

It's a complete scam.
It's a complete scam.
I was charged $59 the moment I enquired.
They have a system where they, I am sure, use stock photos of "teachers, pretend to be that person in a photo and then the teacher becomes "unavailable"
5 minutes before your first "free" lesson a young lady who calls herself a moderator suggests someone else.
I changed my CC number immediately because I suspect that changes will continue.
I contacted them about the refund and got some rubbish answer.

Dont use this platform. It is a Scam
Please dont use this platform. This is a fraud company. I would rate them zero if there was an option. They charge you $59 once you register and send a message to any teacher and the teacher reads the message, even if you dont end up getting a lesson. Also they keep charging you $ 59 per month as subscription charges on top of the lesson charges. The funniest part is that they don't pay the teacher and hold the teacher's money and dont pay the teacher if the teacher doesnt make more than $30. They are scamming the students and teachers both.

I also was led to believe it was a one off payment of $59 then when made payment I find out that there's a monthly subscription fee would be good to be transparent in the initial advertisement I can't say that my experience is bad as I have asked to opt out and refunded.

There is an initial hidden fee of NZ$59 which you only find out about once you try to book the tutor of your choice.
You are then signed up for a monthly subscription.
This site claims it is legitimate but if so, it is overpriced and deliberately misleading until it gets your credit card details.

I do not recommend Superprof for the following reasons:
1. There is an initial hidden fee of NZ$59 which you only find out about once you try to book the tutor of your choice.
2. You are informed that your first meet is free. This in fact is blatantly untrue in light of point 1.
3. An hour before my booked (free?) tuition, I received a message supposedly from the tutor of my choice informing me the tuition would be held an hour later due to a personal emergency.
2. An hour later, I did not connect with the tutor of my choice but was allocated a tutor who I found very difficult to understand because of her accent.
3. Once the free??? tuition had come to a close, I was joined online by a representative who informed me that the advertised tuition fee was actually going to cost me a further $2. per hour. I complained and she left it as advertised.
4. I asked the representative why I could not meet up with the tutor of my choice especially as I had chosen that person as they could travel to meet to do one-on-one tuition but was told that was not possible and further tuition would be on-line and with the tutor I had battled to understand.
5. You have to pay for further tuition up front and they try to get you to book multiple lessons at that time.
Hope this helps other well meaning people out there make their decision.

Pounamu is a great teacher
Pounamu is a great teacher. The format of the lessons is interactive and builds on pre-existing knowledge, finds gaps in vocabulary and grammar and provides a great pathway forward. Pounamu explains the how and the why really well.
