I have been a German Tutor on Superprof for 4 years. I have met some fantastic students. Only twice have I had a student reach out about the payment they had made to Superprof, because they had confused it with the payment for my lessons. My first class I always offer is free, and any further classes are chargeable. I use 3 different websites for my teaching and I find Superprof the most accommodating for Tutors. Another website, I am using takes the first 2 weeks payment for my lessons. The students have to pay upfront for 2 weeks of my lessons directly to the company, only after 2 weeks do I get paid. This could mean that I deliver up to 4 classes free, since some students sign up for 2 classes per week. Superprof has given me the opportunity to meet and deliver my classes to a wide-range of students, all over the world. Thank you Superprof NZ!

From a tutor perspective

From a tutor perspective, I find the site useful and have received contacts from students, who, I have assisted in many ways.
The Teams Meeting interface appears to work well, and I can display my presentations to a satisfactory standard.

Details about the Student Pass are always available in our Help Center and in our Terms and Conditions.

On the payment page, we indicate that the Student Pass is a subscription, without commitment, and only charged if a tutor accepts your request. We also explain that it provides unlimited access to all tutors across all subjects.

When you subscribed, we sent a confirmation email outlining how Superprof works. This included a reminder that the subscription renews automatically each month until you choose to cancel it.

To help prevent any surprises, we also send an email five days before renewal to remind members that they can cancel their Student Pass with just two clicks.

As an online platform, all our communication is done via email, so we encourage checking your inbox regularly.

terrible website - do not subscribe

I found a tutor on the Superprof site and signed up, not realising I had to pay $59 for a monthly subscription on top of the tutor fees. I arranged and confirmed a lesson with the tutor. Close to the time of the lesson, the tutor cancelled the lesson as she was sick. We rearranged and confirmed another lesson. This lesson was also cancelled by the tutor due to still being sick. Months later I realised Superprof was still charging me $59 per month for the 'Superpass' subscription, which I didn't even know I had signed up for. I have cancelled the subscription, and the bank advised to cancel the credit card Superprof has been charging. So I have been charged $177 and didn't even do a single lesson. I have emailed Superprof today requesting a refund.

Stay away from this website! In fact report it to the authorities. It's taking your money and nothing is working. You will not find a tutor on this page that suits your needs. And cancelling your membership is impossible.

Misleading, would not recommend

Charged $59 without any services.
Tutors that accepted my requested did not even read my requirements for study. For example, offered face-to-face - but once accepted said online only.
Since a tutor accepted = no refund/ability to get money back.
Essentially - misleading charged for a service that was not fulfilled, by tutor that do not offer what they sell. Would not recommend.

Unfair business model

Superprof is not an official registered in New Zealand. It's a French company based in France and running their website globally with domain extensions of each country.

I don’t recommend using Superprof. Their business model doesn’t feel fair.

To contact a tutor, you first need to buy a $59 student pass, which is valid for 30 days. During that time, you can message as many tutors as you like worldwide.

But here’s the catch: when you buy the student pass, you’re automatically signed up for a subscription that renews every month for $59 NZD. Superprof will send you an email saying it will renew in 30 days, and another one 5 days before the renewal. To cancel, you have to log into your account and do it through their website. if you don't, they will keep charging for it every month.

They call it a “non-binding subscription”. when you proceed with student pass. subscription details are not mentioned on student pass page. It will show up it on payment page so called "non-binding subscription".

common Psychology of people is eyes roll over on payment details and pay for it. Although the subscription details are sent out by email, there is no guarantee that email will land in your inbox. might go to spam/junk folder.

if you raise query then they will guide you to help center or terms and conditions page on their website.

This subscription model is how Superprof makes most of its money in millions.

company knows how to trick people. they know that no one will go and read terms and conditions ahead.

we cancelled the subscription, but it reactivated by itself a few days later. we cancelled it again and will keep checking to make sure it stays that way. Also, there is no option to remove your credit card details, only Superprof got access to delete credit card details. As advised above, if your subscription reactivates by itself without your concern, you will be charged for subscription on following month.

In New Zealand, we don’t really need to browse lots of tutors. we contacted just one, and my daughter has been taking weekly lessons. Still, because of this tricky system, we were charged for five months.

Instead of putting customers on a subscription for student pass, it would be fairer to just sell a 30-day validity student pass and can contact many tutors. After 30 days, a new pass needs to be purchased to contact other tutors.

Tutors can create their profiles at no cost, but Tutors are charged 10% commission on bookings organized via their platform. If enrolled for premium with annual fee, no commission will be deducted.

only good part is Tutors can fix their own rate for lessons.

It shows $ 59 before contacting the…

It shows $ 59 before contacting the tutor and I did put in my credit card number. But I only had one lesson from the tutor. But my statement keeps telling me I am getting deducted money every month. It doesn't even make any sense since I only got 1 lesson. And the email Superproof sent me didn't even mention the " monthly student pass". This is definitely a scam, if the company are not returning the money, I will call the police within this month.

Too good to be true?!

I was so happy to find an alternative way to learn Japanese face to face. There was only ONE tutor in my area and she looked nice so I tried to contact her just to find myself on the sub page with a $ 59 cost without knowing really how it would evolve from here. I went back to their home page to find another tutor in the same location with the same name (!), different photo and background. Coincidence? .... Coming to trustpilot I feel I will stay away from superprof now. Get your act together superprof! You look like a mean scam!

I have now been ask to give further details!
The cost of $ 59 is not known until you chose a language and teacher. It then appears as a subscription fee and you still don't know what you are getting for this money. One connection to that teacher you are hoping to connect with? When I went back to the first page and tried again, a different teacher with the same name appeared. The choice for teachers in my location is limited to 2 which would not be a surprise. The way this company or organisation or platform presents itself, however, is not transparent. What is the mission? How is it managed to achieve? What do subscribers get?

Scam artists

Scam artists. Why would I need a subscription once I have a tutor. Ridiculous that I would even think that a sit to find a tutor on would force you into a subscription service. I feel for other students that barely earn enough to get by getting money taken from them by this excuse of a company.

Major scam…they claim to only charge your card once a lesson is accepted by a tutor when in fact you are charged immediately, regardless of whether a lesson is accepted. Save your money and look at other options.

They have set up a scam system

Same as all the other 1 star reviewers - this unethical scam that Superprof runs where to be able to access a tutor you have to sign up to a 'service' that allows you to book/contact a tutor. This is done for one reason - that this is a 'subscription' that you get charged monthly for. They try to justify it by saying it is there in writing on the website, but when you are trying to book a tutor I think most people click through the screens to get to do what they went there for - to book a tutor. When customers are not using the service the ethical thing to do would be to message them to let them know that they are paying this monthly fee and getting no benefit from it. But of course Superprof don't do that. They should be ashamed of how they take money from customers for delivering nothing and counting on the unclear process that they have set up to steal money from their customers.

Be wary of recurring charge

We used the Superprof service to find a keyboard tutor who was fine, however Superprof charged me a recurring charge of $59/month after my partner signed up to what she did not realise was a recurring subscription. The subscription is just to access the tutors - not something that would ever need to be recurring as once you hook up with one your relationship is with that tutor. The business model seems designed to trick people (or perhaps to be fair busy people who don't read the fine-print). Took me 12months to spot on my accounts so that turned out to be a VERY expensive keyboard session for our son. The service itself did what it says on the tin but be aware that this is a recurring subscription so you do not fall into the same trap.

Tutor was the hook.

Tutor was the hook. But the Call Manager started getting dodgy. Charged my card for 1 lesson and I cancelled my subscription. Preying on broke students. Disgusting.

Misleading paid service

Previously I was looking for a tutor. To request a trial lesson from a tutor, I was charged $59 as fund that was called the Student Pass.

It was completely not clear that the Pass was actually a subscription with auto renewal enabled!

Consequently, I was charged $59 again at the next month.

So I immediately cancelled the subscription and emailed the support to request a refund at the same day being charged but was refused as they stated they had sent notifications of renewal via email.

So I spent $118 having a chat with a tutor for a free trial lesson.

Before this happened, I still thought my account had $59 balance remaining that I could request more lessons or withdraw!

This is such a tricky earning strategy for them.

I hope people can avoid this smart trap.
