Communication
Communication - when you call the helpline you are advised to email but the response time is over 3 days (sometimes more). And when you do get a response - there is a delay / confusion what stage the process is up to because it seems like they are not keeping on top of recent conversations and do not know if you have already had a response bu someone else. We received our 'Approval / Congratulations email' and then received an email to advise that we have multiple outstanding info. Which had already been rectified. I queried this and have still not had a response 3 days later!

I've taken a look at your account to find the reasoning behind you receiving contradicting emails and can see that you actually have two SafeContractor accounts with us, both of them with the same point of contact. One of the accounts had recently gained their approval, which explains the congratulatory email, and the other was still completing the process, explaining the request for more information.
I reached out to your colleague following your query to explain this and received a reply confirming their understanding, so I am happy that the issue mentioned in your review has been resolved.

Horrible portal
Horrible portal. Difficult to use. Despite our policy being to update procedures every three years, and being able to provide information to back this up, they will only accept certain documents if they have an annual review which means someone has to go in and physically amend the dates on each document just to satisfy them. Things run out but you don't get any alerts prior to the them expiring and your status gets automatically downgraded. I dread the time of year that our accreditation is due to run out. Slow getting back to you after submitting an element for verification. Just an awful, awful thing to have to comply with.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We’re sorry to hear that you’ve found the portal difficult to use and that your experience with the approval process has been frustrating.
To confirm, we are legally required by UKAS to carry out annual audits and need to see copies dated within the last 12 months for many of the documents we request. This is common amongst most SSIP approval bodies and ensures your policies stay in line with current legislation.
Additionally, we do this to give proof to our client's that safe working practices have been carried out over the last 12 month, maintaining a high standard of compliance in their workforce.
To address documents expiring without warning, we only request updated insurance documents throughout the year and won’t require any further documentation until your annual audit. At that stage, our Customer Care team will contact you every few weeks to ensure you have all the tools needed to complete the process smoothly.”
I would like to reiterate how sorry we are that you had a negative experience with us, and we look forward to ensuring you feel fully supported throughout this year.

Incredible, supportive team at Safe Contractor
My experience with Safe Contractor was amazing.
I was very daunted by undertaking this process but once i signed up and was dealing directly with the Safe Contractor team, the worries went away.
To start with i was dealing with Siân Emery who was so helpful and explained everything and was on hand for any questions and queries that i had.
Once the process proceeded to the Safe Contractor auditing team i was dealing with Lizzie Williams who was incredible and so helpful. They really supported me with pushing this through quickly and where so supportive.

In my humble opinion
In my humble opinion, the parts of this company that I have dealt with are a shower and I would strongly advise any main contractor who wants to take them on to do their research. As for subcontractors (like us).....well we don't have any choice really about whether we join this racket or not.....if we don't, we don't get the enquiries.
More specifically, I have proved twice (and they have agreed) that their so-called auto-generated invoice has not been received by us which is (self-evidently) the reason why they have not been paid by us and now, the reason why our account shows "expired" or "at risk" and they say that there is nothing they can do to solve that. So, their system doesn't work and I suffer the embarrassment of my customers thinking we're the problem!

Top notch customer service but poor portal
The portal is not terribly well laid out, especially if you compare it to other accreditation companies and it wasn't always easy to see where to upload things.
However, the customer service was much better than other companies, the response time from SafeContractor was always very good.

For the past 2 decades, we’ve offered a competitively priced flat-rate membership. In response to a rise in client engagement, we’ve introduced a value-based pricing approach rather than a blanket increase, ensuring our pricing better reflects market standards.
To explain the increase in your fee specifically, I can see that your workforce has increased since your previous renewal. As a result, your account now falls within a higher band, which has affected the fee.
We’re making these necessary changes while remaining committed to supporting the smallest businesses in our contractor base. That being said, I appreciate that this is still a significant increase and understand that it has affected your experience with us.
